Happy New Year everyone! Cascade Family
Flyfishers is set for another great year. We have
a ton of outings, clinics, classes, educational and
volunteer opportunities scheduled for this year.
This is a great time to plan your year’s outings.
Check the website. There are too many events to
list here.
While you are on the website, we would love
you to fill out our questionnaire. It is designed to
give you the opportunity to give feedback to help
make the club better, and express your interest
as members. You can fill it out anonymously or
leave your name if you would like more
information.
Fly Tying classes have begun. The beginner
classes are in full swing. Intermediate classes
will begin in March, but are filling up. If you would
like to participate, be sure to contact Rod Roth or
talk to him at Thursday’s general meeting.
Our first event of the year was fly tying gathering
at the McKenzie Fire Station in Leaburg. I would
recommend all levels of tyers to attend our next
tying gathering on Saturday, February 15th. It is
a great way to pick up new skills and visit with
some of CFF’s fly tyers. I am amazed at the
willingness of this group to help other tyers.
We have a new Conservation Chair. Al Heide
has taken the reins and is off and running. He
will be working with the Oregon Fish and Wildlife,
continuing the study of lamprey eels that were
caught and tagged with the traps our members
helped build last year. Al, a former science
teacher, has some great ideas on how we can
contribute to our local conservation efforts.
Our speaker will be Dave Hughes at the
General Meeting on Thursday, January 23rd at
Wesley United Methodist Church. Hope to see
you there.

Notes on a fly fishing liar’s life: confessions, a
bit of history, a few stories, and some trite bits of
advice, at times useful but more often of no use
whatever, from Dave’s 40 years as a writer about

It’s a new year, and I’ve added new DVD’s to the library. I try to keep my eyes open for new releas-
es, but it seems that instructional DVD’s are not being made as frequently as they used to be. May-
be the internet is to blame and/or there’s no money in it. I did find several that have been out for a
while which I hope you will appreciate.
The Underwater World of Trout Series: Unlike most of our collection, this 3 DVD set will teach
you about trout behavior rather than how to catch them.
Discovery: Exploring the underwater environment, teaming with bugs, structure and habitat.
Trout Vision and Refraction: What do trout see? What do our flies look like from their per-
spectives?
Feeding Lies: Why do trout eat leaves and twigs? What is the sprint speed of a trout? Do trout
feed in strong currents? Is the adipose fin really necessary? After all, hatchery fish don’t
need them. Or do they?
European Nymphing. If you have been bitten by the Euro nymphing craze, these two DVD’s may
give you a different perspective than what you have learned so far.
European Nymphing: Techniques and Fly Tying. This DVD provides descriptions of Euro
nymphing styles (Czech, Spanish, French), rigging, casting, and typical flies.
European Nymphing: A Strategic Approach. If you are experienced with the technique, you
might want to skip the first DVD and watch this one. There are 10 scenarios of different wa-
ter types and how to fish them.
Fish the Surf: Warning! This is not a fly fishing video, but is instructional for those of us who sling
metal on occasion. Plus there are generic things to learn about fishing in the surf that can be ap-
plied to fly fishing the surf.
Check out these DVD’s and others at the meeting. Remember, you can reserve them through the
website to get “first dibs”. And remember to bring back the DVD’s you have checked out.

2020 is an exciting year for the Cascade Family Flyfishers Outings schedule. We already have sev-eral of our favorite fishing spots lined up with CFF’s hospitable and knowledgeable outing hosts. Many of our dates are coordinated with the US Fish and Wildlife stocking schedule so the catching, at least theoretically, is more probable and a little easier. At each of our meetings there will be a sign-up sheet for upcoming outings. A variety of day and overnight trips have been planned as well as still water, stream and river experiences. There’s al-ways lots of fun, fishing, food and companionship. Due to liability constraints, CFF sponsored outings are for CFF members only, but our $25 dues are well worth the cost of membership. Come join Cascade Family Fly Fishers.
Cleawox Lake March 19 Bill Burleigh We’re back to this coastal lake south of Florence with still water expert Bill Burleigh. This lake is shallow, easily fished, and heavily stocked. Bill knows this lake well and is usually successful here. What a great way to get the kinks out of your fly line and kick off our 2020 angling season. Bill will be preparing a Dutch Oven meal for those who come to this outing!
Hult Reservoir (Horton Pond) April 11 Bill Burleigh/Glen Neal This is the oldest outing on our schedule, and usually the most heavily attended. Leaders Bill Bur-leigh and Glen Neal know the lake like the back of their hands. This is a good trip for novices and experienced anglers to get help from the many club members attending without driving far. Fishing can range from red-hot to slow, but it is always a good time. And…to top it off, Bill and Glen always bring Dutch oven cobbler desserts so don’t miss this one!
Clear Lake May 9 Eric Inskip This will be the first ever CFF outing on Clear Lake that forms the headwaters for the McKenzie Riv-er. Called the “lake born of fire”, Clear Lake was formed 3,000 years ago when lava from Sand Mountain created a dam. The ancient forest preserved in the crystal cold water is still visible in plac-es today. The lake is primarily fed by snow runoff from nearby Mount Washington and the surround-ing areas. The runoff filters through caverns for more than 20 years before emptying into Clear Lake. This is one of the lakes stocked with specially tagged fish. Our host, Eric Inskip, has researched fly fishing Clear Lake and will be sharing his knowledge as we explore this beautiful lake for the first time.
Crooked River May 15-17 John Higby Crooked River is a nice, small, tail water river about 20 miles south of Prineville in eastern Oregon. The river is a winding oasis flowing out of a valley below the Prineville Reservoir into the eastern Or-egon desert. The six miles just below Bowman Dam is the target and many campgrounds line the banks of the Crooked along Hwy 27. It’s an extremely popular fishery with lots of redband, rainbow & whitefish. Most would say the average size fish is 12 inches, but many are larger.
Crane Prairie Reservoir May 30 Bob Wolfe Crane Prairie Reservoir is one of the most famous Oregon lakes for consistently producing large trout. Crane is a large lake and can be very intimidating to a newcomer. Fortunately, our club has several people who fish it regularly with success and have narrowed it down to small areas easily accessible with a float tube or pontoon boat. This outing is a great opportunity to fish with some ex-perienced club members, learn the lake and catch some large fish.

Erma Bell Lakes June 19-20 Glenn Miller The Erma Bell Lakes are nestled in the Three Sisters Wilderness area and provide a beautiful set-ting to spend two days fishing for wild Rainbow trout up to 18 inches. We camp at the trailhead for one night and pack our float tubes into the lakes on a two-mile, fairly level trail. This annual trip pro-vides exercise, good fishing, and great camaraderie as we eat and fish as a group. Come join us in 2020!
East Lake July 9-11 Kat/Frank Paiva High in the caldera of a dormant volcano at 6,400 ft., East Lake is one of the most beautiful areas in Central Oregon to fish. Large brown trout, rainbow, and kokanee are abundant, and CFF members do our best to get them attracted to our flies. Come join us for one of our most popular annual out-ings.
Small Streams July 24-25 Randy Beard If you're looking to learn or gain experience on small stream fishing, this is the trip for you. We'll spend two days fishing on the best small streams around Oakridge (North Fork, Middle Fork, and/or Salmon Creek), all upper tributaries of the Willamette River. We're planning to have 3-4 experi-enced stream fishers to help guide this trip. Beautiful scenery, some good exercise, and a chance to catch feisty, wild Cutthroat and Rainbows are attractions for this trip. Gold Lake Derby (3rd Annual) August 28-30 Joe Moody/Dennis Munroe Gold Lake lies at the top of Willamette Pass at 4800'. This beautiful, serene lake is full of brookies and some large rainbows. Anglers are often very successful here. Last year’s winner, Alan Corbin, will be back to defend his title. Nearness to Eugene and the exceptional fish fry potluck make this one of our most popular outings each year. Metolius River September 11-12 (tentative) Mike Marlatt Stream anglers couldn't dream up a better outing than this! A challenging, blue ribbon trout stream in a beautiful setting and a trip leader who is a hall of fame fly tier who spent his youth fishing the Metolius. Mike Marlatt again leads this outing for 2020…should be a memorable trip.
Steelhead @ Jasper Park September 26 Fred Acosta This is a specifically Spey/Switch rod outing for steelhead but single hand rods are welcome. This outing will show off your swing technique using steelhead and skater flies. The Willamette River at Jasper Park provides plenty of wadable shoreline to swing flies near the town run when the steel-head are heading to the dam hoping to spawn.
Diamond Lake October 9-10 Bob Wolfe Diamond Lake outing is always a grand adventure for those participating. Set at 5,100 ft. high in the Umpqua National Forest, this beautiful lake is ideal for fishing with views of Mt Bailey and Mt Thiel-sen. The outing host, Bob Wolfe, has lots of experience fishing this lake over many years and is al-ways ready to share his expertise. The Diamond Lake Lodge offers amenities that make this trip a delight.
