From the Assistant Principal…. On Monday morning bright and early, our Grade 6 students along with eight staff members headed off on
the bus to Canberra.
We wish them well on an adventurous and enjoyable time as they journey around
Canberra and take in the sights mixed with educational and cultural experiences,
some of these include: Government and Parliament house, Australian War
Memorial, Mount Ainsley, Anzac Parade and other points of interest.
They will arrive back at school some time Friday afternoon depending upon the traffic. Parents will receive
updates from the teachers via Compass – please don’t contact the Office as they won’t have any information
on the arrival time.
In two weeks’ time the Grade 5 students will attend a three day camp beginning on
Monday 15 March with a day exploring Sovereign Hill Pioneer Settlement and then
heading to the Log Cabin Camp in Creswick, staying Monday and Tuesday night.
While at the camp, students will be involved in numerous outdoor activities.
Happy camping to our Grade 5 students!
Congratulations to our swimming team who competed in and won the district
swimming sports last Wednesday.
A number of the students went on to the division finals on Monday.
Thanks to Louise Petersen who organised the group and to the parents who provided
transport and support. Regards,
Mark Smith,
Assistant Principal.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS
The Federal Government requires people who are working with children to have a Working with Children Check (WWCC).
All parents who do any type of voluntary work in the school must have a valid WWCC.
You can find the application form online at http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/
The form needs to be lodged at your local Post Office. When applying please make sure you get a Volunteer WWCC. These
are issued at no cost to parents. When you have applied for the check please send a copy to school so that we can update our
records.
The Code of Conduct will also need to be completed before commencing volunteering. A copy of the Code of Conduct is
attached to the newsfeed for the newsletter and also available on Compass. Please return completed forms to the Senior School
office.

Grade Prep Report ....
On Friday 26th February the Prep students were treated to a performance called ‘Bully Bullring’,
about a lovely bison who was being teased by her brother. With the help of some special animal
friends, the students learned about some simple strategies to help the bison (and themselves!)
deal with issues that might be encountered when meeting and making new friends.
An important reminder from Elephant was: Remember to forget the things that upset you and
don’t forget to remember all the things that are GRRRREAT about you!!
Giraffe advised: RISE above it and ignore silly behaviour from others.
Lion suggested: Get back to the pack and play with friends (old and new).
The Prep teachers are very impressed by how well the students are settling into school and forging new friendships.
Keep up the great work and keep being kind!!
Grade 3 Report .... “It definitely should be!”
“It’s completely outrageous!”
“It’s so very vital!”
“It’s totally shameful and unacceptable!”
Hi! Our names are Thea and Oriana and we are in 3AB. Over the past few weeks, the Grade 3s have been focusing on persuasive
writing. The most important parts of a persuasive piece are persuasive devices, such as emotive language, facts and exaggeration,
persuasive language, such as ‘cruel’, ‘shameful’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘definitely’, and arguments that are backed up with lots of detail.
All this makes a piece really, really strong!
Screen time should be limited to one hour a day!
Isabella F (3AA): Screen time should be limited to 1 hour a day because it can damage your eyes!
Oriana H (3AB): I think screen time should be limited to 1 hour a day because it can affect your sleep!
Thea M (3AB): It should be limited to 1 hour a day because if you play a game for a long time you will certainly be in a very bad mood by
the time you get off!
Frankie H (3AC): Too much screen time can lead to an unhealthy eyesight1
Henry H (3AC): Too much screen time could cause you to lose your sight!
Phoebe J (3AD): I think screens should be limited to 1 hour a day because children WILL go blind! I mean, who wants to see a blind child?
Charlotte P (3AD): Screen time should be limited to 1 hour a day so that you have more time to hang out with your precious friends and
family!
Serena R (3AE): 1 hour a day will prevent you from becoming glued to the screen!
Penny W (3AE): Less time on screens will allow you more time with family!

Grade 4 Report ....
The Grade 4 students have been learning how to develop our School Value of RESILIENCE. Our grades have been talking
about how stepping out of our comfort zone to tackle something new can help us to grow and learn even more! Last week we
created our own version of THE LEARNING PIT. The Learning Pit is something that good learners enter when they are faced
with a challenge. Our Learning Pits show the stages we might go through when we are forced with something really challenging.
“You should always keep trying. It feels good to learn something new!” Allon
“If you keep trying you will eventually learn what you wanted and get it right!” Zach
“I always try my best. It’s important not to give up!” Daniel D
“If you have a growth mindset you are more likely to learn than someone with a fixed mindset.” Tara
News from the Italian Department ....
Ciao a tutti,
Welcome to Italian Term 1! It has been great to be back in classroom setting with our amici.
To our new preps, benvenuti all’ italiano. Many of the little ones were surprised to learn that they
already knew about Italy and the language, discovering that pizza, pasta, Nutella, “Uno” and gelato were
Italian. Some even already knew how to say hello in Italian. Through the shared story of ‘Il Pappagallo’, the
children will be learning about family members and colours.
As for the rest of the school children, they will be revising and extending common language topics such as
colours, numbers, days of the week and classroom objects.
Grade 5 have been looking at Italiani Famosi, learning many wonderful facts for example, Leonardo Da
Vinci developed a system of mirror writing – writing from right to left to throw off people trying to copy
his ideas.
Venezia, in Italy, has recently celebrated Carnevale which is an annual festival where it is a tradition to
wear masks and costumes. Every year, the children always comment on the colourful display of masks in
the Italian room and look forward to their turn when they reach Grade 6. We have just begun learning of
the history of Carnevale and in the next few weeks, this year’s Grade 6 children will be painting and
decorating a maschera (mask) of their own. Some may even like to wear their maschera for our Italian
Day coming up in Term 3, which further information will be posted closer to the event.
A Presto!
Signora Perrone and Signora Langley
