Inside This Issue... Upcoming Events and Information, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Children’s Ministries, Memorials and Special Gifts, August Calendar,

Stewardship Update, Youth News, and much more .......

I f you missed being a part of Vacation

Bible School (as a child or an adult),

you missed a great experience. Jesus

said, “Let the little children come to

me”. That is what VBS all about…

bringing children to Jesus. It is my

prayer that every year we will grow the

number of children we bring to Jesus!!

Each night a VBS, the children were

a s k e d t o w r i t e t h e i r “ G o d

sightings” (some of these are on the

sanctuary back wall). This is an

exercise to help children to see God in

people, places, nature, and events. The

fact is: this is a good exercise for

everyone! Allow me to share with you

some of my God sightings at VBS.

God was in the leaders of VBS. This

was evident by the calm care they gave

to children, especially those who were

extremely active or had special needs.

God gave them strength and wisdom

for the task of being “Jesus” to the

children (some who do not see this at

home or with other adults).

God was in the story of Joseph…the

children really got it! God is faithful,

gives wisdom, and is always with us.

Special notice goes to George Dees.

George stepped in at the last moment to

be Joseph and tell the children “his”

story. His storytelling center was some

of the children’s favorite part. He had

the children’s attention and they learned

from him.

There is much more I could tell you of

where I saw God at VBS, but this was

the most moving one…God was in the

children’s prayers. Three of the

nights of VBS, Melanie asked children

(not teenagers, but children!) to close

the program with prayer. One child

gave a simple prayer and ended it, “I

love you, God”. That should touch

your heart. Another child was a little

nervous but prayed for everyone there

and that God would help us. The third

child prayed for the police officers and

prayed that God would give us wisdom.

Folks, the Holy Spirit was with us at

VBS…transforming hearts and lives.

The Holy Spirit planted some seeds at

VBS that with prayer will grow into

some amazing servants for the Lord.

Hallelujah!!

Promotion Sunday for Children’s Sunday School.

Everyone is invited to gather in the fellowship hall during the

Sunday school hour for food, fellowship and fantastic hospitality

to each other! There will be breakfast casseroles, fruit, donut

holes, coffee and juice.

This is a great time to get to know our newest members and

welcome them into our faith family. Melanie will also share what

is in store for our children and youth this year in Sunday School.

Let’s make this a new tradition!

________________________________________________

DINNER GROUPS… As we grow in worship attendance and with new members, it is

even more important that we find small groups in which to

fellowship and study. Dinner groups of 6-8 people will help us

fellowship and get to know each other.

Sign-up between August 21 and September 4th. Dinner groups

will be formed by the middle of September so groups can have

dinner together 3-4 times before the end of the year.

**Important Notes:

If your group decides to eat dinner at a restaurant, you are

encouraged to return to the church or to one of your

homes for dessert and a quieter time of conversation.

Single people are encouraged to sign up with another single

person so you will not be a solo single in a group. If we

have enough to sign up, we could have a singles Dinner

Group.

SIGN-UP SHEETS will be available in the worship bulletins

August 21 and in the church office. Those who have agreed to be

Dinner Group Leaders will be contacted before the end of August.

CALL FOR SEASONS OF FASTING AND PRAYER

Over the last several weeks, we have seen senseless murders,

brokenness, racism, and corruption. In addition, we are entering a

time of escalating political verbal assassination. How does a

Christian respond? With more intentional prayer and more

intentional kindness. How does a Christian know what to do?

With more intentional prayer and more intentional gentleness.

2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “if my people, who are called by my

name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and

turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I

will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

We humble ourselves through fasting and urgently pray for God’s

will and wisdom. Only God has the answers to all our concerns.

The goal of fasting is not the fast itself, to feel proud of yourself,

or to lose weight. The goal of fasting is to spend the time you

would spend for meals in prayer. If your health will not allow you

to fast from food, then fast from an activity that you do every day.

Just pray without ceasing!

For those who have fasted before: I challenge you to a 14 week

fast beginning August 7. Extended fasts are usually done by

fasting one meal a day or fasting one to two days a week.

For those who have never fasted before: I challenge you to a 21

day fast (one day a week or one meal a day) from September 7-27

and again October 7-27.

To learn more about why, how and when to fast, I will be offering

a one meeting class to discuss fasting and prayer at the following

times: Wednesday, August 3, 10am, and 7pm; Wednesday

August 10, 10am and 7pm. If none of those times work for you,

let me know and I will set another day and time(s).

Fasting Guides will also be available by the middle of August.

During our time of fasting, we will gather for prayer as a church.

Church Wide Prayer Gatherings: Fridays… August 19, 6:30pm;

September 9, 6:30pm; September 30, 6:30pm; October 7,

6:30pm; October 28, 6:30pm

Let us pray for our church...let us pray for our

country...let us pray for spiritual renewal!

Church Wide Studies Will Resume In September...Watch for

the announcements of our next study and meeting times.

MISSIONS

Parents/Relatives of College Students – Reminder! If you wish to have your student(s) assigned a church member

sponsor who will keep in touch with your student during the

school year and will offer friendship, prayers, support, encour-

agement, and occasional goodies or gift cards throughout the

year, I need the following information for the 2016-17 school

year: mailing address, email address, text/cell number, birth date

if during school year, and any other information you think would

be helpful to the assigned sponsor in contacting your student.

Please reply to Terry McNeill at [email protected] or 336-

270-5135 no later than August 31. Thanks for your help and

participating in this ministry.

Fruit Sunday In support of Gibsonville Baptist Church Food Pantry, we collect

fruit on the first Sunday of every month. For people who choose

between food, housing or medicine, fruit is an item that can be

lost in the process. However, we know that fruit is essential to a

healthy body.

Bring canned fruit and place in the designated bins in the

Welcome Center and in the room off of the narthex.

Food Drive...3rd Sunday of Every Month! Guilford County is one of the most food insecure counties in the

country. We are stepping in to help fill the gap. Your donations

will be distributed between Gibsonville Baptist Church Food

Pantry and the bags of food that go home with children in need at

Gibsonville elementary school. Remember to include

non-perishables that are high in protein. Bring items and place

them in the designated bins.

School Supplies Collection continues… Our 5th Sunday

Mission on July 31 was the collection of school supplies for

Gibsonville Elementary School. If you missed the opportunity,

the collection ( or monetary donation) will continue through

August 14. We will order supplies in bulk (at a discounted rate)

or you may shop the sales. Needs for the beginning of school

are: boys book bags, #2 pencils, glue sticks, pencil top erasers…

For more information, contact Lisa Kale, Chairperson of the

Send/Outreach Committee ([email protected]).

Blessing of the Book Bags and School Supplies Children, youth and school teachers are invited to bring their

“bags” to worship on Sunday August 28th, both services. In

worship we will bless the supplies we have collected, the

supplies the children, youth and teachers have, and bless the

children and teachers. Let us be in prayer for a wonderful school

year for our children and teachers so that God will guide them in

their teaching and learning.

Greensboro Urban Ministries Breakfast

Sunday August 14 What a great way to worship God by serving and return to the

church for worship in music and The Word!! Gather at the

church at 6:30pm to carpool or ride the van to Greensboro. At

the site, folks are already preparing breakfast, so we set the table

with milk, juice, etc. and serve the folks when they arrive. This

is a great ministry for those who live on the streets to have a

hearty hot breakfast and for us to serve the “least of these”—

God’s blessings abound in the process!!

For additional information or if you would like to make an

appointment to give blood, you may contact Faye Cheek

(449-7990). We are also in need of baked goods to be given

to the donors. If you would be willing to provide some

goodies, please drop them off any time during the day on

Monday, August 22.

Why Donate Blood? You don’t need a special reason to give blood.

You just need your own reason.

Some of us give blood because we were asked by a

friend.

Some know that a family member or a friend might

need blood some day.

Some believe it is the right thing we do.

Whatever your reason, the need is constant and your

contribution is important for a healthy and reliable

blood supply. And you’ll feel good knowing you've

helped change a life.

You will receive a mini physical to check your:

Pulse

Blood pressure

Body temperature

Hemoglobin

Benefits of Donating

It feels great to donate!

You get free drinks and delicious goodies.

It's something you can spare – most people have blood to spare... yet, there is still not enough to go around.

You will help ensure blood is on the shelf when needed – most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.

You will be someone's hero – in fact, you could help save more than one life with just one donation

MEMORIALS AND SPECIAL GIFTS TO HONOR FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES

GUMC,

My deepest and s inceres t

appreciation for the calls, visits,

flowers, cards, food and prayers

received during a most difficult

time. As with all of my recent

illnesses and recoveries and the loss

of Christopher just six months ago

our Church Family has been with us

and continue to be as we pray for

the strength to understand along

with the peace and comfort to get

through each day.

Ginger Jarrett & Family

Dear GUMC Church,

Thank you so much for the

beautiful Bible that I received for

graduation. The fact that the church

who established a foundation for

my current beliefs still has me in

their thoughts truly amazes me, and

for this I am so grateful. I will take

this generous gift with me to

college and read it as much as I can.

So once again, thank you. This

church has been with me for years

and I’ll never take that for granted.

Sincerely,

Noah Zaiser

Dear Story Scholarship Committee

and Church Family,

Thank you so much for awarding

me the Story Scholarship. I am

sure that I will enjoy my experience

at UNCW and the additional

scholarship money will help my

family and I a great deal. I look

forward to an exciting year and

thank you again for all your love

and support! Go Seahawks!!
