Town of Lake WaccamawWastewater Treatment Plant

Performance Annual Report (2015-2016)I. General Information Person in Charge/Contact: Michael Prostinak, ORC Wastewater Treatment Plant - 910-616-3700, NPDES Permit Number - NC0021881

II. Description of Treatment Process Class II, 0.4 MOD Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment with a bar screen, aeration basin, clarifier, two settling ponds, and two digesters for Sludge that is to be used in a compost process.

III. Performance Test Summary of the System Performance for the period July 2015 – June 2016: a. August 2015 - Fecal Coliform limits were exceeded during the 2nd week of the month due to a faulty Chlorinator. A new Chlorinator was purchased and placed into service on 7/12/15. b. October 2015 - Exceeded weekly Fecal Coliform limits during the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the month due to heavy rainfall and 1&1 problems. c. November 2015 - Exceeded weekly Fecal Coliform limits during the 1st and 2nd weeks of the month due to heavy rainfall and high flows. d. December 2015 - pH readings were not taken on 12/9/15 and 12/15/15 due to pH Meter problems. e. March 2015 - Weekly Fecal Coiform limits were exceeded during the 2nd week of the month probably due to the heavy rainfall during the preceeding week which resulted in very high flows. f. May 2015 - Exceeded weekly Fecal Coliform limits during the 1st week of the month due to heavy rainfall. High flows did not allow sufficient detention time for proper disinfection.

NOTE: The majority of our Permit Violations at the Treatment Plant are for exceeding the Fecal Coliform limits after a heavy rainfall. We have an Inflow/Infiltration problem in the Collec-tion System which allows surface water to enter the system causing the flow volume to increase. We have been working on this problem for several years and some progress has been made. Many sewer lines have been replaced and Lift Stations have been upgraded. However, even with these improve-ments, heavy rainfall in a short period of time will increase the flow to the point where wastewater leaves the Plant before it is completely processed. We are still working on this prob-lem and will continue to do so until we have under control.IV. Notification: This report is being made available to system users by printing same in the News Reporter and posting on the Town’s website at www.lakewaccamaw.com.
