focalpointFellow member-owners:

We would like to call to your attention a recent trend in the financial services industry that could adversely affect you. It seems more and more lenders and service providers are promising incredible ease and convenience, but at an exorbitant cost.

Mortgage loans are a prime example. Several lenders are now widely advertising incredibly fast and easy services, particularly via the internet. We’ve researched their fees and charges and found that on average they charge several thousand dollars more than ONCU for an identical loan. Plus, the process isn’t really any easier or faster after the initial application is filed. This marketing gimmick is also popping up for those interested in selling a home. Several companies are advertising that they will buy your home, pay the title and escrow fees, and even pay for your move. We’ve found that these companies are either paying significantly below market value for your home or assessing large fees. We too believe in providing fast and easy service, but in an honest and forthright way. We also offer the convenience of applying for a mortgage or auto loan online through our website and mobile app. Our mortgage team is right here in Nevada and will guide you through the process without overcharging you. So when you’re ready to buy or sell your home, be sure to shop around. Compare costs, fees and service then make an informed decision. We’ll even help you compare, at no cost or obligation.

Thank you for your membership.

It’s the Airman, not the General, who stands armed atop the bunker on Christmas Eve

It’s the Airman, not the General, who crews the jet in the snow and the blowing sand

It’s the Airman, not the General, who wades waist-deep in the murk to fix the water line

It’s the Airman, not the General, who rigs the wires on which the Orders are sent

It’s the Airman, not the General, who jumps under fire, to rescue the downed lieutenant

It’s the Airman, not the General, who sews tight the wounds of a gravely injured comrade

It’s the Airman, not the General, who drafts the letter to a fallen warrior’s Mother

Today, it’s the Airman, not the General, whose children are born...when he is TDY, again!

Thus, it is to the Airman, that the General and each of usmust dedicate ourselves...fully, faithfully, and forever!

Q: How long have you been with One Nevada?

A: Since 1990

Q: Favorite thing about One Nevada Credit Union?

A: My wife and I have been credit union members for over 45 years, and we love the people and the professionalism of the folks at One Nevada Credit Union.

Q: When did you enlist in the Air Force and what attracted you to join?

A: Like many of our young Airmen today, in 1965, the Air Force ROTC program at Oklahoma State provided the “financial aid” that enabled me to afford college. The minute I lifted-off on a junior-year “orientation flight” in an Air Force fighter, I knew I wanted to fly fighters forever.

Q: What’s the most memorable event of your first assignment in Vietnam?

A: That would have to be the F-4 Phantom mission where my jet was hit by ground fire, and we ejected over North Vietnam. Except for malfunctions in the ejection seat and parachute, and being shot-at in the chute, it wasn’t that bad. My partner in the fighter was captured, but a Navy rescue-man (from my own high school) and his chopper crew kept me from being killed or captured.

Q: What Air Force planes did you fly primarily?

A: During the first 10 years, I flew the F-4 in Vietnam, California, Georgia, Spain and Germany. The last 20+ years I flew the F-16 here at Nellis (on three assignments), South Carolina, Korea, Georgia and Southwest Asia.

Q: What were your assignments at Nellis Air Force Base?

A: My wife and I were extraordinarily fortunate to be assigned at Nellis for 8 of our 32 years in the Air Force. In the mid-80s, we were part of a combat-ready F-16 wing, culminating as a squadron commander. In the early 90s, I was the commander of the Weapons School (the Air Force version of Top Gun). In 2000, I was blessed with the best “old guy, flying job” in the Air Force, commander of Nellis’ Warfare Center.

Q: What was the most rewarding part of your Air Force career?

A: It was certainly exciting to fly and fight at low and high altitude over almost every continent and having the opportunity to lead combat forces from Southeast Asia to Southwest Asia. But serving in remote locations with our young troops was the most rewarding. Unfortunately, the average American isn’t able to see the unbelievable dedication and selflessness of our country’s young Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines.

Q: What was the toughest part of your 32 years in the Service?

A: “Family separation” has always been a challenge for military members, and it certainly is today. There’s no way to completely ease the personal pain of missing a child’s birth, birthday or their first Christmas. I saw it break-up marriages, distance parents from their children, and cause more heartache than our great troops deserved. We knew and know it’s a part of the mission, but it’s still a tough biscuit. It’s also why my wife Sherri and I really enjoy our son Richard and his wife Jangme, living here in the Vegas valley.

Q: What do you remember most about your last assignment as the Warfare Center commander at Nellis?

A: After three decades of watching our Airmen do incredible things, using their ingenuity and aggressiveness when deployed or in combat situations, these young Americans blew me away in the way they handled the events of “911.” From the initial alerts that Tuesday morning, to the tireless way they performed unimaginable tasks in defense of Nellis and the Vegas valley, to their preparation for potential conflict, it just makes you proud to be associated with such outstanding Warriors.

Thank you for your service L.D.J!

L.D. with wife Sherri. Richard (L.D. and Sherri’s son), daughter-in-law Jangme and their cat Kayla.

“I really don’t measure up to the truly Great Americans I’ve known, nor the young troops who are serving overseas right now... I can’t imagine anyone would want to read about an old busted-up fighter pilot!”

BORROW

Mortgages aren’t always what they appear to be.

O ne of the biggest mistakes you can make when purchasing a home, is choosing a lender without shopping around. Considering all of the online mortgage lenders offering low or no fees and some offers filled with gimmicks, we wanted to remind you to shop around before choosing a lender.

Here are some steps you should take before settling on a lender:

1) EDUCATE YOURSELF. First educate and determine if you qualify for a specific type of mortgage like conventional, VA, FHA or ONCU’s New Start Mortgage. Also, look into state assistance programs that can help with down payment costs like the Home is Possible program. Learn about rates and terms.

2) DO MORE HOMEWORK. Ask your home-owning friends for recommendations if they’ve had a good experience, and ask what issues they were faced with.

3) NEGOTIATE. Meet with 2-3 lenders and compare interest rates, terms and lender fees, and ask for a breakdown of total costs so you can compare. Ask about incentives, and if one is offering a cash incentive, ask the other why they are not offering the same.

4) SHOP SMART. Don’t be fooled by some of the online companies that might advertise better rates, no fees and speedy closings. Sometimes it’s best to work with someone in person that can explain the process and all the details, being this might be the largest purchase you’ll ever make. Fast and easy might come at a cost. Some of these lenders will promise you the world but tack on hidden fees. Even if interest rates and loan terms are similar across different lenders, final costs and fees at each lender might not be.

Be sure to work with a reputable mortgage team and research their reviews online or ask for testimonials. And don’t hesitate to ask our Mortgage Services team at One Nevada what we can offer and how we compare to other lenders.

Enjoy near record low mortgage rates and no hidden fees!Call (702) 382-4094 for more information or apply online at OneNevada.org/mortgage.Federally insured by NCUA. Equal Housing Lender.

DID YOU KNOW?

EMPLOYEE FOCUS

IHow long have you been with ONCU? I have served members in the Investment Program for almost 12 years.

Can you explain how the Investment Group , available through CUSO Financial Services, L.P. (CFS*) can help members? Our goal is to help improve our customers’ financial lives in every area. This could be helping set up college savings to a complete financial plan for their future goals and dreams. Our customer base is so diverse. One day we are helping a family find a better fixed rate another day we are helping with a 401K rollover.

Where can a member meet with you or any of the other CFS* Financial Advisors? At any one of our branches by appointment, just call us at 702-641-4323.

What’s the biggest misconception about financial planning? People believe you have to have a lot of money to start. We want to educate members on how to build a financial house for their future, including having an adequate emergency fund. Another misconception that hinders people from sitting down with a Financial Advisor is thinking they will get sold something. Our goal is to educate and improve their financial situation. If we are not able to do that, we have no right asking for their business.

At what age should you start financial planning? The time to start is now. One of the biggest problems I see is procrastination. Most people have good intentions, but never put them into action. The ideal time is a parent starting something for their child, but the bottom line is, it’s never too late.

What is the most important thing someone should know before meeting with a CFS* Financial Advisor? We are not going to force you to do anything. The first appointment will be a “Get to know each other” and how we can best serve their needs appointment. If the customer feels comfortable, we will go from there.

Best part about working at the CU? It is like a family. It’s an atmosphere where everyone loves what they do. The way everyone gets along and the relaxed atmosphere makes it a joy to come to work.

Tell us about a fond memory you have from your first days on the job? I remember our customers would sit and wait for a certain FSR no matter how long it took. It just made me realize how different ONCU was from any other financial institution I had been a part of and how important relationship building is.

n 1967, British inventor John Shepherd- Barron introduced the first De La Rue Automatic Cash Machine (DACS) in London. The machine used a cheque-like token that had a Personal Identification Number (PIN) placed on it that was made up of a radioactive compound of carbon-14. The machine would detect the radioactive emission of the PIN number and match it to a number entered on a keypad. Since then ATMs and PINs have evolved to using magnetic encoded cards and numbers that are generated through smartphones. Watch for new innovations at One Nevada’s ATMs in the near future, including side loading card acceptors to protect against card skimming.
