OverviewThe New Media Group (NMG) is a social enterprise headquarteredin Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. NMG includes several subsidiary companies focusing on commerce, design, investment, marketing and technology. As a social enterprise which empowers human-centered business, the organization seeks to create a positive corporate culture while making a difference in the world. This commitment to social impact is demonstrated by NMG’s status as the founding Certified B Corporation in the region. NMG currently has 80 employees. Recent clients include Bloomberg, The Asia Foundation and The President of Mongolia.

Social Responsibility OriginsAs a social enterprise, NMG aligns social and environmental impact with its business operations. As the founding B Corporationin Asia, NMG is committed to creating social change. NMG cultivates strong social engagement through social responsibility programs and is dedicated to supporting nonprofits and international organizations.

NMG’s mission is to build businesses, support communities, and solve environmental and social problems. This has been part of the vision for NMG as established by its founder Mend-Orshikh. NMG believes its commitment to making society a better place through running businesses and giving back to the community is ultimately going to encourage a better way of doing business around the world.

Quality SolutionsNMG uses the B Impact Assessment (BIA) as its primary manage-ment tool. BIA is designed by the nonprofit B Lab to provide tools and impact standards that help organizations measure social and environmental impact—similar to how accounting standards measure financial impact. NMG views BIA as an excellent frame-work for designing, deploying, and measuring its overall social and environmental performance. BIA measures the overall impact of a business on all stakeholders (workers, suppliers, customers, community, and environment) through an online platform.

NMG emphasizes the engagement of its employees and external stakeholders in its business planning and management processes. Regular community meetings across the organization help NMG monitor how the organization is doing on its social, environmental, and workplace goals. Finally, NMG’s Vice President of Knowledge, provides individualized personal development plans with each employee to understand how they are developing within the NMG team and in support of NMG’s mission.

Strategies in Action1. TEDx – NMG led the effort to organize the first TEDx event in

Mongolia which took place in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar in 2011 and has played a key role in supporting over half a

dozen TEDx events in the last three years. This year, NMG is supporting the first TEDLive events to take place in Mongolia, including TED 2014 and TEDGlobal 2014, live-streaming both events at one of the largest theaters in the country.

2. New Media Foundation – On its one year anniversary as a company, NMG founded the New Media Foundation as its philanthropic arm. Staff members work with a range of partners

to support community organizations. NMG provides its partners with business services and professional advice from

its experienced team. To date, the New Media Foundation has supported over 30 organizations.

3. Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK) – NMG staff have been inspired by RHoK for many years. This is a joint initiative

between Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, NASA, and the World Bank, led by SecondMuse. This “hackathon” brings together developers to produce open source solutions to challenging world problems.

4. Global Representation – The NMG team has a presence in international social responsibility organizations and missions including B Corporation, The Oath Project, Global Shapers,

One Young World, and Global Dignity.

Future DirectionNMG prides itself on developing partnerships with outstanding companies and businesses in Mongolia and around the world. These partnerships continue to deliver benefits for stakeholders. In the social responsibility field, NMG is honored to be part of the worldwide B Corporation movement and supporting the expansion of B Corporation in Asia and around the world. NMG is also connecting with organizations like SecondMuse to develop strong collaborations with their projects worldwide.

The SRO – The Socially Responsible Organization At ASQ we believe that to be socially responsible, people and organizations must behave ethically and with sensitivity toward social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues. We also believe that quality helps create, manage, and improve the social and environmental impact of people and organizations.

Over the past few years, social responsibility has become a growing expectation of employees, customers, suppliers, governments, and the general public. The major challenge for organizations is understanding how to connect their business strategyand the imperative to be socially responsible. ASQ created TheSRO – The Socially Responsible Organization in order to define how quality can help organizations manage and continuously improve their social responsibility performance. TheSRO is an international movement of thought leaders and engaged stakeholders seeking to demonstrate how the innovative application of the Quality Body of Knowledge (QBOK®) is helping organizations grow financially while also generating social and environmental good.

TheSRO movement offers an exciting opportunity for knowledge sharing and collective learning on a global scale. Your invaluable input and engagement is helping define a more sophisticated social responsibility approach—one that is integrated with an organization’sbusiness strategy. Together, we can grow TheSRO into a global community that addresses the emerging needs of our world.
