PERSPECTIVES

Wholesome food and healthy lifeMonday, 3 September, 2012

“Eat to live, not live to eat!” It is true thatwe must know what to eat and how to eat, so wecan enjoy healthy and happy life as health isalso wealth.

Fruits and vegetables contain all thenecessary vitamins and minerals needed for ahealthy body. Wholesome fruits and vegetablesare less expensive and much more enjoyablethan vitamin supplements and pills. Generally, carrots, sweet potatoes, green beans, peas, onions, garlic, broccoli, yogurt, low-fat dairyproducts are among the wholesome foods weshould choose.

Of course, there are many other nutritiousfoods other than those we feel are wonderful,health-promoting foods, and if there are otherWholesome foods such as fruits, vegetables,nuts/seeds, whole grains, etc that we like, by allmeans we must enjoy them. Among thethousands of different foods our worldprovides, the majority contain at least severalof the nutrients our bodies need. In fact, thehealthiest foods are foods that the majoritypeople can easily find at their local market.

For most of us, moderation or balancemeans eating less than we do now. Morespecifically, it means eating far less of theunhealthy stuff (unrefined sugar, saturatedfat, for example) and more of the healthy (suchas fresh fruit and vegetables). But it doesn’tmean eliminating the foods we love.

During a meal, we must stop eating beforewe feel full. Because it actually takes a fewminutes for our brain to tell our body that ithas had enough food, so we should eat slowly. We must listen to our body, and ascertainwhether we are really hungry or just feelthirsty.

Having healthy breakfast and eating small, healthy meals throughout the day (rather thanthe standard three large meals), avoiding eatingat night, taking time to chew our food andenjoying mealtimes, and eating with otherswhenever possible are also important factorsfor health. So, let’s eat wholesome food andlive a healthy life!

Thefacility is a cornerstone of

Iran’s drive to become atechnological leader amongMuslim nations, with effortssuch as an ambitious spaceprogramme and long-rangemissile development. Iranalso runs smaller researchreactors and is buildinganother power reactor.

The United States andsome of its allies believe theBushehr plant is part of anIranian attempt to developnuclear weapons. Iran deniesthe accusation, saying itsnuclear programme is forpeaceful purposes.TheBushehr project dates backto 1974, when Iran’s US-

backed Shah MohammedReza Pahlavi contracted withthe German company Siemensto build the reactor. Thecompany withdrew from theproject after the 1979 IslamicRevolution brought hard-lineclerics to power.

In 1992, Iran signed a $1billion deal with Russia tocomplete the project and workbegan in 1995. Since then, theproject has been beset byproblems linked to constru-ction and supply glitches.Under the contract, Bushehrwas originally scheduled tocome on stream in July 1999but it was repeatedly

Angola’s Dos Santos securesbig election win

LUANDA, 2 Sept — Angola’s long-serving President JoseEduardo dos Santos and his MPLA party scored a landslidewin on Saturday in an election criticized as one-sided and notcredible by opponents and civil society activists, accordingto provisional results.

The results from Friday’s voting announced by theNational Elections Commission showed the governing partywith 74 percent of the vote - far ahead of its nearest rivals withvotes counted from over 70 percent of polling stations. Undera new constitution introduced in 2010, the MPLA win meansDos Santos, who turned 70 this week, is elected for a furtherfive-year term on top of the nearly 33 years he has alreadyserved as leader of Africa’s No 2 oil producer.

Angola’s seaside capital was calm and there were nosigns of any celebration or uproar in the streets, whichindicated the overwhelming MPLA victory in only the thirdelection since independence from Portugal in 1975 was widelyanticipated. Silver-haired Dos Santos is Africa’s secondlongest serving leader after Equatorial Guinea’s PresidentTeodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

The provisional results gave the MPLA’s closestchallenger, former rebel group UNITA, nearly 18 percent, while the third-placed CASA-CE party was approaching fivepercent in its first election test after being formed by UNITAdissident Abel Chivukuvuku four months ago. Chivukuvukutold reporters his party, which along with UNITA hadcomplained repeatedly of serious irregularities in the votepreparations and the electoral process, was analyzing theresults before deciding whether to accept or reject them.

But another prominent CASA-CE member, candidate forLuanda William Tonet, dismissed the provisional results as“cheating taken to its maximum level”. “This is like a declarationof war by the MPLA ... it indicates to citizens that there canbe no alternative through the electoral route,” he told Reuters.Sources at UNITA said party president Isaias Samakuvawould challenge the announced results.

PARIS, 2 Sept — A topEuropean Union officialpraised court rulings inHungary and Romania whichrejected widely criticizedattempts to entrench theirruling parties in power, butsaid she remained worriedabout both countries’institutions. Viviane Reding, the European Commission’svice president in charge ofjustice, told Le Mondenewspaper that Hungary wasone of the most worrying casesand cited the government’sbid to lower the retirement agefor judges — thrown out inJuly as unconstitutional.

Hungary’s top court, ruling against the legislation, said it would be a threat to the

independence of the judiciary, echoing criticism by theEuropean Union. Theconservative ruling partyFidesz also used its two-thirdsmajority in parliament to passa new constitution, whichcritics saw as cementing itsgrip on power by takingbudget issues and other areasof law out of the top court’sjurisdiction. “That stateremains one of those whichworry me the most,” Redingwas quoted as saying in theinterview, published onSaturday. “The courts theremust be independent.”

“All the problems haven’tbeen resolved, but the worsthas been avoided thanks, thereas well, to a coalition of

Science & Technology Science & Technology Science & TechnologyTiny gravity changes show magma’s

underground movementsWASHINGTON, 2 Sept—

The secret movements ofmagma deep inside a volcanocan be detected by trackingthe subtle changes in gravitythey cause. Surprisingreadings from a Hawaiianvolcano have researchershoping to better understandvolcanic activity throughgravity monitoring.

Continuous gravitymeasurements of activevolcanoes are relatively rare, with most results coming fromMount Etna in Italy.

“One problem is the

expense,” researcherMichael Poland, ageophysicist at the USGeological Survey’sHawaiian Volcano Observa-tory, explained. “Gravitymeasurements have alwaysbeen a really expensiveendeavor. The big users areoil and mining companies.”

Now scientists havemonitored the gravity atK?lauea, a popular touristdestination on Hawaii’s BigIsland, and discovered aregular cycle of fluctuationsthat suggest magma is

churning a kilometre (0.6miles) below the surface.

The way magma churnsin underground chambersbelow volcanic vents is keyto understanding howpersistent volcanoes are, andwhether or not they mightcatastrophically erupt in thefuture. However, what goeson deep under the Earth’ssurface is difficult to monitor.

One way to peerunderground is by looking atEarth’s gravity, the resear-chers said. Anything that hasmass has a gravity field that

pulls objects toward it. Thestrength of this field dependson the amount of mass. Sincethe Earth’s mass is not spreadout evenly, this means thestrength of the planet’s

gravitational pull is strongerin some places and weaker inothers. As such, the flow ofmagma from one place toanother can be detected fromabove.—Internet

Jupiter mission makes orbit adjustmentPASADENA, 2 Sept—

NASA’s Juno mission toJupiter has successfullychanged its orbit inpreparation for a 2016 arrivalat the giant gas planet, thespace agency says.

In performing its firstdeep-space maneuver, thespacecraft initiated the first oftwo planned firings of its mainengine to refine thespacecraft’s trajectory, settingthe stage for a gravity assistfrom a flyby of Earth 9 Oct,

2013, that will send it on itsway for arrival at Jupiter 4July, 2016, NASA JetPropulsion Laboratory inPasadena, Calif, said onThursday.

The engine was fired for29 minutes, 39 seconds, changing the spacecraft’svelocity by about 770 mph,JPL said. “This first andsuccessful main engine burnis the payoff for a lot of hardwork and planning by theoperations team,” JPL Juno

Project Manager RickNybakken said.

The burn occurred whenJuno was more than 300million miles away from Earth.A second one is planned for 4Sept. “We still have the Earthflyby and another 1.4 billionmiles and four years to go toget to Jupiter,” said ScottBolton, Juno’s principalinvestigator at the SouthwestResearch Institute in SanAntonio. Facebook ad targeting to use e-mails, phonenumbers

SAN FRANCISCO, 2 Sept—A new tool for advertisers letsthem target ads to customerswho have already used theirservices.

Facebook plans to rollout a new advertising toolthat will let companies targettheir ads to existing customersbased on their phone numbersand e-mail addresses.

The social network islaunching the new tool nextweek and touts it as a way forbusinesses to reengage withcustomers who have alreadyused their services, accordingto a Facebook spokesperson.

For those who may haveprivacy concerns over thisexchange of personalinformation, the socialnetwork said the process issecure.

What this means isFacebook isn’t giving any ofyour data away, it’s takingexisting numbers andaddresses from businessesand letting those businessesuse the information to targetits ads.

On the flip side, Facebookwon’t be gaining any newdata from businesses. Whenadvertisers give Facebook

your data, it is hashed — asecurity technique thatscrambles your data — beforeit is fed into the advertisingmachine. Once the ads areplaced, Facebook dumps thehashed data, so that if anadvertiser wants to do anotherad, the process starts overagain.

The new method wasavailable briefly in theFacebook Power Editor, avirtual toolbox used byadvertisers to create ads, according to Inside Face-book. Facebook continuesto figure out how to improve

The base will helpincrease the population of theendangered golden monkeysin Shennongjia by conqueringkey technical problems, saidYang Jingyuan, director withthe institute.

Regarded as China’s“state treasure,” just like giantpandas, golden monkeys areclassified as under top levelprotection. In naturalconditions, the birth rate ofShennongjia golden monkeysis about 4 percent, with thesurvival rate of monkey cubsat only 6 percent.

“It is still an unsolvedscientific question why thegolden monkeys inShennongjia becomepregnant between Augustand October. And the femalemonkeys can only deliver onecub every two years,” Yangsaid. Nokia, Microsoft head for “last chance saloon”NEW YORK, 2 Sept—

Microsoft Corp and NokiaOyj are loading up for theirbest — and possibly last —shot at denting a smartphonemarket dominated by AppleInc’s iPhone and GoogleInc’s Android mobilesoftware.

If the new Lumia phonesdo not appeal to consumerswhen they are unveiled nextWednesday, it could meanthe end for Nokia, and aserious blow to Microsoft’sattempts to regain its footingin the mobile market, analystsand investors said. “This isvery high stakes,” saidCanaccord Genuity analystMichael Walkley. “Nokia bet

everything on Windows, andif this doesn’t succeed thenext step might be having todo what’s best forshareholders, and that mightinclude selling off key assetsor selling the wholecompany.” The Finnishhandset maker has loggedmore than 3 billion euros inoperating losses in the last 18months, forcing it to cut 10,000jobs and pursue asset sales.

Its share of the globalsmartphone market hasplunged to less than 10percent from 50 percentduring its heyday before theiPhone was launched in 2007.

For Microsoft, asuccessful Lumia launch

would convince more handsetmakers and carriers to supportits latest phone software, which is based on the samecode as the upcoming Win-dows 8 computing system, and promises fasterperformance and a customi-zable start screen.

Windows phones haveonly captured 3.7 percent ofthe global smartphone market, according to StrategyAnalytics. Android phoneshave 68 percent, while Applehas 17 percent.

Business & Health Business & Health Business & HealthHow steady job could benefit

diabeticWASHINGTON, 2 Sept—For people who are diabetic or

prone to diabetes, having a steady job appears to be good fortheir health.

And the benefit lies in their adherence to anti-diabeticmedications, and not just because of the insurance coverage, according to a new University of Michigan study.

It found that that jobless working-age people with diabetesare less likely to adhere to their oral anti-diabetic medicationsthan diabetics who are employed.

Further, people of working age with diabetes are morelikely to be unemployed than those who do not have diabetes.

The lack of a clear-cut, cause-and-effect relationshipbetween insurance and medication adherence surprised leadresearcher Rajesh Balkrishnan of the U-M College of Pharmacyand School of Public Health.

“Improved use of medications is more than just a facet ofhaving medical insurance. It is linked to bigger issues such asbeing employed, periods of joblessness or a personal financialstrain,” said Balkrishnan, who believes that a healthier, active

lifestyle and access to medical care resources throughemployers that want employees to remain productive play abig role in adherence.

Other factors that account for lack of medication adherenceinclude lack of financial resources, stress due to unemploymentand lack of access to health care.

Researchers looked at diabetes because it is one of themost commonly present chronic conditions in working-ageadults in the United States, and globally it is the seventh-leading cause of death and the eighth-most costly disease totreat, Balkrishnan said.—Internet

Sluggish foreign trade bringswoe to shipping industry

CHANGCHUN, 2 Sept —Industry insiders warned thatChina’s shipping industrywould face a difficult situationwithin the year as a result ofslump in import and exportgrowth. “It would be moredifficult (for the sector) in thesecond half of the year thanin the first half,” said ChangDechuan, chairman of theboard of Qingdao Port(Group) Co, Ltd, on Saturday.

“Port and shippingenterprises need to be wellprepared as the globaleconomic downturn wouldmire the import and export inthe next two to three years, and the situation iscompounded by uncertain-ties in domestic economy,”Chang made the commentswhile attending an enterpriseforum in Changchun, capitalof northeastern province ofJilin. Profit growth for portenterprises has dwindled, judging from the perfor-mance of listed companies, while shipping enterpriseshave suffered great lossesdue to global over-capacity.

Shanghai-listed ChinaOcean Shipping (Group)Company (COSCO) witne-ssed a loss of 4.87 billion yuan(773 million US dollars) in thefirst half of the year, and itprojected a further loss forthe first three quarters, mainlydue to the global economicdownturn and the slowdownin China’s economic growth.

Zhang Yansheng, aforeign trade expert with theNational Development andReform Commission, toldXinhua that downwardpressure on import and exportmight ease in the second halfof the year, but that trend isnot fundamental.

“Neither overseasdemand nor domesticdemand will improvesignificantly, and that trendcould last for several years,”Zhang said. Zhang Liang, ananalyst with GF SecuritiesCo, Ltd, said profits of portenterprises in Q3 might dropfrom a year ago as a result ofdecreasing throughput andrising labour cost.

KHARTOUM, 2 Sept — Sudan’s army repulsed a rebelattack in the oil-producing border state of South Kordofan, state news agency SUNA said on Saturday, in clashes justdays before Sudan and South Sudan are set to resume talkson securing their disputed border. South Sudan split awayfrom Sudan last year under a 2005 peace deal that endeddecades of civil war, but the two have remained at odds overa range of issues and conflict has continued to plague theirborderlands.

One of the most contentious issues has been Khartoum’saccusation that Juba is supporting the rebel Sudan People’sLiberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) in South Kordofanand other insurgents. South Sudan denies the charge butdiplomats say the accusations are credible. Sudan’s armysaid rebels had launched an attack against government forcesin the Rashad area in the state’s northeast on Thursday, SUNAsaid. “The army repulsed this limited attack,” army spokesmanAl-Sawarmi Khalid told SUNA, adding that several civilianshad been wounded when a car ran into a mine rebels hadplanted on a road near Rashad on Friday.

The SPLM-N was not immediately available for comment. Its spokesman said on Friday its forces had clashed with thearmy in the Rashad area on Wednesday. Sudan and SouthSudan are expected to resume negotiations over bordersecurity in Addis Ababa next week, talks delayed because ofthe funeral for Ethiopia’s former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. The two countries are expected to come under pressure frommediators to reach a partial deal on border security so thatthey can resume oil exports vital to both economies.

AMISOM forces kill 36Al-Shabaab fighters in Somalia

NAIROBI, 2 Sept — The Africa Union Mission in Somalia(AMISOM) killed at least 36 Al-Shabaab militia late Fridayas the troops took over Miido town in a fierce exchange offire that last several hours in southern Somalia. KenyaDefence Forces (KDF) spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchirsaid on Saturday that five KDF soldiers are missing in actionwhile three sustained injuries and have been flown toDhobley to receive treatment.

“AMISOM forces together with the Transitional FederalGovernment of Somalia soldiers in Sector 2 captured Miidotown and neutralized at least 36 Al-Shabaab militants,” Chirchirsaid in his official Twitter account. The development came as the military has stepped upsecurity along Kenya’s common border with Somalia followingan outbreak of fighting between AMISOM forces and the Al-Shabaab militia. The Kenyan forces currently under thecommand of AMISOM are dealing with specific targetsagainst the Al-Shabaab, but security had been reinforced onthe Kenyan side of the border. The sources said hundreds of the insurgents blamed forbomb and grenade attacks on the Kenyan soil includingabduction of foreigners had left the strategic port city ofKismayo to prevent Kenyan and Somalia forces from derivingthem from their last stronghold. The AMISOM forces havebeen very active this week after killing more than 40 militantsearlier in the week as they stepped up their onslaught to ridoff the Horn of Africa from Al-Shabaab.

to help staff at the LongshawEstate in Derbyshire managethe estate — a natural andarchaeological site —withthe ants’ needs in mind.

“I think this is a worldfirst. It has not been done inthe wild before,” said Ellis ina video produced by the UKNational Trust, whichmanages the estate.

Ellis is not certain howlong they will stay attachedto the insects.

“The tags act like a barcode,” he said in the video.“It gives each ant anindividual identity and whatthis means is you can seewhich ants are going whereand how individual antsinteractions work together tomake the colony long

behaviors.”An estimated 50

million hairy wood ants,Formica lugubris, inhabitthe estate. They are thelargest species of ants nativeto the British Isles withworkers reaching up to 0.4inches (10 mm) long. To getfood for their young, theants gently stroke sap-sucking aphids, which then

produce honeydew; inreturn, the ants protect theseaphids.

The ants defendthemselves from predators byspraying smelly, vinegar-like formic acid. Some birds, like Jays and GreenWoodpeckers, use the formicacid spray as a cleansing agentto get rid of parasites, according to the Universityof York.
