NEW YORK, 29 Aug—Wall Street faces an interest-ing few weeks as commen-tators debate whether the re-covery in the Dow Jones av-erage this year is the start ofa new bull market or head-ing for a fall.

Since the beginning ofMarch, when the Dow Jonesaverage hit a multi-year-lowat 6,547, the index hasincreased more than 50percent. “To a certain degree, the market is perhaps sittingon the head of a pin. Themarket could easily be

The Federal ReserveChairman Ben Bernankeclaimed the economy was“on the verge of recovery”on last Friday. However,Nouriel Roubini, the NewYork University professorwho predicted the financialcrisis, said the chance of adouble-dip recession wasincreasing because of risksrelated to the ending of glo-

According to Weisberg,“The obvious answer is per-haps Bernanke is correct, which is being evidenced bythe continuous strength inthe stock market. We knowthat the stock market is aleading indicator, not a trail-ing indicator. It tends to lookahead three, six or 12months. The tape simplysays, I think, that it is look-ing ahead at an improvingUS economy”.

Mexican scholars, officials callfor more use of clean energy

MEXICO CITY, 29 Aug — Mexican scholars andgovernment officials called for more use of clean energyat an environmental seminar on Friday.

Nobel Prize winner Mario Molina said one way toresolve environmental crisis was to abandon the pastdevelopment model and use more clean energy.

The world could switch to clean energy sources at acost of 1 to 3 percent of gross domestic product, and thecost of inaction would be far higher, Molina said.

Adrian Fernandez Bremauntz, director of Mexico’sNational Ecology Agency, said Mexico should build moreefficient societies which used energy in a sustainable manner.Wind power was already producing competitive energy, hesaid, adding that and the relative cheaper price of fossil fuelswas based on short-term calculations which did not includethe price of environmental damage.—Xinhua

US reports 33 more A/H1N1flu deaths, 859 more hospital-

izations in past weekHOUSTON, 29 Aug—The A/H1N1 flu death toll in

the United State has reached 555 with hospitalizationsof 8,842, according to the latest statistics released bythe federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) in Atlanta on Friday.

The CDC said that 33 more deaths have beenreported in the past week, a jump from the previousrecord of 522 released a week ago by the agency.Meanwhile, there have been 859 more patients of thenew virus admitted to the hospitals in the past week, bringing the total number of the hospitalizations aroundthe country to 8,842, compared with the previousrecord of 7,983. The newly-confirmed figures showthat fewer patients had died in the past week comparedto the previous week, while the number of patientsadmitted to the hospitals in the past week had nearlydoubled that reported for previous week.—Xinhua

Worldwide death toll ofA/H1N1 flu rises over 2,100GENEVA, 29 Aug— At least 2,185 people world-

wide have died from the A/H1N1 influenza since thenew virus was identified in April, the World HealthOrganization (WHO) said on Friday.

All the six WHO regions have reported deaths fromthe pandemic, with the Americas reporting the larg-est death number of 1,876, the UN agency said in alatest update of the situation. In South-East Asia,139 deaths were recorded, followed by Europe withat least 85 deaths. Deaths in the West Pacific, Africaand East Mediterranean stand at 64, 11 and 10 re-spectively.

The total number of lab confirmed A/H1N1 flucases reported worldwide is over 209,438, but thisactually understates the real number of cases as coun-tries are no longer required to test and report indi-vidual cases, the WHO said. Meanwhile, the WHOwarned that the H1N1 pandemic virus “has rapidlyestablished itself and is now the dominant influenzastrain in most parts of the world.”—Xinhua

Robots may have alighter touch

LONDON, 29 Aug—Canadian researchers say a ro-bot detected tumor tissue with a 35 percent lightertouch than that of humans.

Researchers at the University of Western Ontarioand Canadian Surgical Technologies and AdvancedRobotics in London used cows’ livers containingsmall tumor-like blobs to test the ability of both robotsand surgeons to feel or “palpate” for malignant tissue— usually stiffer than the surrounding tissue.

The researchers found the robots’ accuracy scoresfor detecting tumors—depending on the robot con-trol method used —were between 59 percent and 90percent better than those of the surgeons.

The robot is being developed to be small enough tobe used in minimally invasive surgery, which mini-mizes tissue damage, infection risk, recovery time andcosts, the researchers said.

“Using robots to detect tumors is not only feasible, but results in reduced tissue trauma and increased tu-mor detection,” lead author Ana Luisa Trejos of Ca-nadian Surgical Technologies and Advanced Robot-ics said in a statement.—Internet

NEWCASTLE, 29 Aug—British scientists are try-ing to determine why aJupiter-style planet or-biting close to its sunhas not spiraled into thestar and burned up.

Wasp-18b is so closeto the star Wasp-18 thatit completes its orbit inless than an Earth-length day, astrophysi-cists at Keele Univer-sity in Staffordshiresay. In an article in Na-ture, they say standardastro-nomical theorieshold the planet shouldhave a lifespan of lessthan a million years, while Wasp-18b is be-lieved to be a billion

years old.Astronomers have a

similar problem in oursolar system. Phobos, one of the moons ofMars, has an orbit only5,000 miles up thatshould, according totheory, have led to a fa-tal collision with theplanet long ago.

Coel Hellier of Keelesaid there could be rea-sons for the anomaly.Wasp-18 might haveless energy than it ap-pears or the planet mayhave been spiraling in-ward and is a recent ar-rival at its currently ob-served position.

India loses Moon satellite linksLONDON, 29 Aug—All communication links with

the only Indian satellite orbiting the Moon havebeen lost, India’s space agency says.

Radio contact with the Chandrayaan-1spacecraft was lost abruptly early on Saturday, saidIndia’s Bangalore-based Space ResearchOrganization (ISRO).

The unmanned craft was launched last Octoberin what was billed as a two-year mission ofexploration. The launch was regarded as a majorstep for India as it seeks to keep pace with otherspace-faring nations in Asia.

Following its launch from the southern state ofAndhra Pradesh, it was hoped the robotic probewould orbit the Moon, compile a 3-D atlas of thelunar surface and map the distribution of elementsand minerals.—Internet

In this picture released in October 2008, a modelof the Chandrayaan-1 mooncraft is seen on displayin India. India’s first moon mission, launchedamid much fanfare last year, has come to anabrupt end after the country’s lunar craft lostcontact with its controllers, the national space

agency said.—INTERNET
