KINGS OF THE GREAT HOUSE The New Kingdom began in 1552 B.C.

Egyptian kings took the title of pharaoh, meaning “great house”

Egyptians believed that the flesh of their gods was made of gold

MILITARY Egypt’s first full-time army began during the

New Kingdom

Under Dynasty 18, Egypt sent troops as far north as the Euphrates River

Egypt also conquered part of Nubia, a land rich in gold

The pharaohs placed part of Nubia – also called Kush – under the rule of an Egyptian official

QUEEN HATSHEPSUT Sent armies into Nubia and southwestern

Asia

Demanded that the conquered lands pay tribute to Egypt in exchange for protection

Acquired animal skins, myrrh trees, ebony, and gold through trade

AMENHOTEP IV He and his wife, Nefertiti, abandoned the worship

of Amon and other gods

Favored Aten, the god of the sun

Changed his name to Akhenaton, meaning “server of the Aten.”

Had the names of the other gods removed from temples and tombs

Moved Egypt’s religious capital to a new city, Akhetaten

TUTANKHAMEN (PRONOUNCED: TOO-TANG-KAH-MUHN) Took over the throne at 9 years old (his name

at the time was Tutankhaton)

Pressured by advisors to restore old Egyptian gods

Changed his name to Tutankhamen, or “living image of Amon”

Died at age 18; he was buried in a solid-gold coffin in a tomb packed with treasure

RAMSES II Came to power in about 1289 B.C., ruled for

65 years

Also known as Ramses the Great

He made the kingdom prosperous

Early on, he battled the Hittites

Later, he focused on building magnificent temples all over Egypt.
