The EU in the world:

aka, a story of maps

The EU in the world:

aka, a story of maps

The European Union New Juncker Commission

• Criticism:

– 'Activist' Commissioners over-intruding

• Example:

– "Olive oil jugs" incident

• Appointment of First Vice-President, Frans Timmermans, to oversee every legislative proposal and to block or change them if necessary

The European Union New Juncker Commission

• Criticism:

– 'Activist' Commissioners over-intruding

• Example:

– "Olive oil jugs" incident

• Appointment of First Vice-President, Frans Timmermans, to oversee every legislative proposal and to block or change them if necessary

The European Union New Juncker Commission

• Criticism:

– Growth and Jobs

• Example:

– Fiscal consolidation and stabilisation main focus, but growth and social cohesion suffered

• €300 billion Investment Fund to help the European economy + appointment of VP for Growth and Jobs (Katainen)

The European Union

The European Union New Juncker Commission

• Criticism:

– Legitimacy of European Commission

• Example:

– Accusation of unelected bureaucrats deciding about our lives – extremism/populism on the rise

• New Juncker Commission is comprised of: 4 former Prime Ministers, 4 Deputy Prime Ministers, 20 former Ministers, 7 returning Commissioners and 8 former Members of the European Parliament

The European Union New Juncker Commission

• Criticism:

– Unclear focus of major priorities

• Example:

– Structure of Barroso Commission (horizontal) and its Communication Strategy (vertical)

• Formation of Project-Teams (vertical logic) to emphasise ten political priorities in seven policy fields:

- Foreign Policy; Digital Single Market; Euro & Society; Growth and Jobs; Energy Union; Budget; Fundamental Rights & Better Regulation

• Spokespersons' Service to represent the new, 'more political' Commission (horizontal logic)
