The Geneva Motor Show revealed a raft of
new Audi models and technologies pointing
to the brand’s future direction. Here are the
highlights from the show that sets Audi’s
exciting launch agenda for 2012.
The new Audi A3Revolutionary leaps in quality, technology
and driver appeal characterise the new Audi
A3 (above), the third generation of the car
that pioneered the premium compact class.
With prices starting from around
£19,000 ROTR and first UK deliveries
expected in September, the new A3 three-
door goes on sale with three advanced
engines at launch – 1.4 TFSI 122PS and
1.8 TFSI 180PS petrol and 2.0 TDI 143PS.
With Audi’s ultra lightweight build
technology, the new A3 weighs an impressive
80kg less than its predecessor, helping to
deliver average efficiency gains of 12%,
including CO2 emissions from as low as
99g/km – turn to page 8 for full details.
A1 quattro limited to 333 examples Just 19 out of a total production run of 333
examples of the phenomenal A1 quattro
(right) are scheduled for the UK. Powered
by a 2.0 TFSI 256PS engine, 0-62mph is
despatched in just 5.7secs, yet combined fuel
consumption of 32.8mpg and CO2 199g/km
make this a wholly useable supercar
Stunning new 450PS V8 RS 4Available exclusively with the Avant body
style, and expected in the UK this September,
the new Audi RS 4 (right) delivers a
sensational 4.7sec 0-62mph time thanks to
the sonorous 450PS V8 engine first seen in
the RS 5, 7-speed S tronic transmission and
quattro all-wheel-drive.
Purposeful flared wheelarches, 19” alloy
wheels and full quattro GmBH body styling
mark out the RS 4 as a performance flagship.
Inside, RS trappings include black leather
and Alcantara® seats, with carbon inlays to
the dash and doors.
All-new A3 stars at Geneva; storming RS 4 and A1 quattro pack a performance punch
Budget announcements relating to rising BIK tax
for company car drivers focus our minds even more
on how to reduce fleet operating costs. Looking
ahead, that and the ever-increasing price of fuel are
possibly the biggest issues facing fleet.
So it’s good to see that, starting on page 12,
our new A4 and A5 models include models with
CO2 emissions as low as 112g/km and combined
fuel consumption of up to 65.7mpg to help
soften the blow.
We’ve also taken a detailed look at new-
generation TFSI technology and suggest it is a
serious alternative to TDI for drivers covering lower
mileages, and who want lower BIK bills. The new A4
1.8 TFSI 170PS SE, for example, can save its driver
up to almost £550 in tax over 2yrs/20,000 miles
compared with the equivalent A4 TDI – see page 10.
Elsewhere, we’ve the first details of the exciting
brand new Audi A3, as well as the new A6 allroad
and A1 Sportback – turn to page 3 for the full story.

The Audi A1 has been named Best Luxury Small
Car 2012 by CarBuyer.co.uk’s panel of experts
and road testers.
Editor-in-Chief of CarBuyer, Steve Fowler,
pictured above handing over the trophy to
Director of Audi UK, Martin Sander, at the
Geneva Motor Show, explained: “The Audi A1
continues to be the best luxury small car for
CarBuyer users. It’s posh, but not too pricey
while running costs are super low. We love the
way it looks, the way it drives and the quality
for the cash is unbeatable.”
The judges also commented on the A1’s
quality and attention to detail: “The A1’s sleek
good looks and incredibly upmarket cabin
are at the heart of Audi’s appeal, while its
impeccable build quality is second to none.
“What’s more, the arrival of the new more
versatile five-door Sportback means the A1 is
now as practical as it is desirable.
“On this evidence, it’s going to take
something very special to knock the A1 off the
top step of the podium in 2013.”
Fresh from an emphatic win at the 12 Hours of
Sebring on 17/18 March, Audi approaches the
80th Le Mans 24 Hours race on 16/17 June with
two sports-prototype LMP1 cars equipped with
TDI hybrid drive – a world-first in motorsport.
Running alongside two R18 TDI ultra cars
competing in the newly announced FIA World
Endurance Chamiponship, the R18 TDI e-tron
hybrid prototypes have one axle powered
conventionally and one by electric motors.
Thus equipped, the hybrid cars also hail the
reintroduction of quattro to the racetrack.
Scotland’s Allan McNish will drive one of
the hybrids while fellow Brit Oliver Jarvis pilots
a conventional drive car.

Double win for Audi at BusinessCar Awards
For the second year running, BusinessCar
magazine has honoured the Audi A3, naming it
‘Lower Medium Car of the Year 2012’; the Audi
R8 also retains its prestigious ‘Sporting Car of
the Year’ title for 2012.
Speaking of the A3, whose award came on
the eve of the unveiling of the all-new Audi A3,
Paul Barker, editor of BusinessCar, said: “It’s no
surprise that readers of BusinessCar have picked
the Audi A3 as their favourite lower medium
model in 2012.
“The A3 has proved to be a consistent fleet
favourite, combining premium brand image
with low running costs and emissions to offer a
great business car proposition.”
New A1 Sportback: premium quality with five doors for even greater practicality
The new Audi A1 Sportback is available to order
now, with five doors bringing a fresh dimension
to the A1 range and adding even greater
versatility and convenience.
Despite its identical ‘footprint’ to the A1 3dr,
the new A1 Sportback is 6mm wider and 6mm
taller, offering an interior with full five-seat
capability and greater head and shoulder room,
with no change to the boot’s 270 litre capacity.
Broad TDI and TFSI engine rangeAs with the A1 3dr, the Sportback is available
with 1.2 TFSI 86PS, 1.4 TFSI 122PS, 1.4 TFSI
Budget 2012 brings in tougher CO2 thresholds and higher BIK tax for many company drivers
Budget 2012 announced the welcome removal of
the 3% diesel tax charge in April 2016, but it was
tempered by higher BIK tax for many from April,
and no reduction in fuel duty to sweeten the blow.
For drivers of company cars with CO2 emissions
of 120g/km, the BIK tax percentage rises from 10%
(13% if it is a diesel) to 15% (18% for diesel) on
6 April 2012, while drivers of cars with CO2
emissions of 99g/km or less, and between 121g/km
and 124g/km inclusive, are unaffected in 2012/13.
The key Budget findings are summarised here:
• In 2012/13, the 10% BIK tax rate (13% for
diesels) applies to cars with CO2 emissions
of 99g/km or less. The rate for cars with CO2
emissions of 100g/km is set at 11%, increasing
by 1% for every 5g/km to the maximum of
35%. In 2015/16 and 2016/17, BIK percentages
increase by two percentage points up to 37%.
• VED rates rose by RPI on 1 April 2012. Cars with
CO2 emissions of up to 100g/km remain VED
exempt in 2012/13.
• The fuel benefit charge multiplier used to
calculate tax due on ‘free’ fuel for private use
rose from £18,000 to £20,200 on 6 April 2012.
• Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP)
rates remain at 45p/mile for the first 10,000
business miles and 25p/mile thereafter.
• Capital allowances, for cars with CO2 emissions
of between 111g/km and 160g/km reduce from
20% to 18% from 6 April 2012. For cars emitting
above 161g/km of CO2, the rate falls from 10%
to 8%. In April 2013, the capital allowance CO2
threshold falls from 160g/km to 130g/km.
• The 100% first year allowance (FYA) for cars with
CO2 emissions of 110g/km or less is extended
to April 2015, but the threshold falls to 95g/km
from that date, and leased company cars will no
longer be eligible for the FYA.
• In 2012/13, Class 1A NICs remain as for 2011/12
at 13.8% of taxable value annually.

Despite the imminent arrival of the
new Audi A3, the current A3 outgunned the
Volkswagen Golf into second place, with
the Vauxhall Insignia in third among Fleet
Alliance’s 10,000-strong vehicle fleet.
“Audi models are desirable with low carbon

a greater number of user choosers, they are
proving to be the ideal choice, particularly at
the SME end of the fleet market,” said Martin

First seen in Audi’s high performance S and RS
models, cylinder on demand (COD) technology is
making petrol engines more attractive through
reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Soon to become available in the Audi A1 range,
COD results in the A1 1.4 TFSI® 122PS models
achieving a diesel-like 109g/km and 60.1mpg on
the combined cycle.
The technology works in the 1.4 TFSI engine
by shutting down two of the engine’s four cylinders
when the engine is under very light throttle loads or
during coasting, with no perceptible difference in
performance or even engine note.
In smaller models, where the price premium
for the cost of a diesel engine often requires very
high mileage before the greater fuel economy of
the diesel begins to reap rewards in lower operating
costs, COD gives fleets and drivers more options
when choosing the engine best suited to the role of
the vehicle.
Rising fuel prices. Increasing BIK tax costs. Both are
a constant concern for company car drivers and fleet
operators alike.
So how can you counter relentless cost increases
without compromising model choice, driver appeal and
value for money?
Cutting your mileage is an obvious answer, and in
today’s cost-conscious economic climate many drivers
have successfully managed to reduce the distances
they cover, perhaps relying instead on improved
communications and the internet for business.
Technology, however, can also play a significant role
in cutting costs, particularly when it’s applied to Audi
TFSI® and TDI engine technology.
TFSI®: reduced BIK tax for lower mileage drivers
The fuel economy and low CO2 advantages of TDI mean
it is still the most cost-effective choice for business
drivers covering over 20,000 miles a year.
But for lower mileage drivers Audi TFSI® petrol
models are especially attractive, with lower acquisition
costs and reduced BIK tax among the advantages.
The latest Audi TFSI® engines, which now includes
the ground-breaking cylinder on demand technology
(see panel, right), means Audi TFSI® models are
achieving the levels of CO2 emissions and fuel
consumption that diesel engines were capable of just a
few years ago.
And with unleaded petrol currently around 7p
per litre less expensive to buy than diesel, added to

the generally lower acquisition costs of TFSI®, drivers
covering lower annual mileages can see benefits.

TDI model.
In fact, the TFSI® even works out around £150 less
expensive overall, based on today’s fuel prices.
So, with fuel prices set to rise further, and the

When your business looks at how to
procure its electricity, does it go ahead and
build a power station in the basement to
supply it?
Probably not. So why, when it comes to
the provision of IT and computing services,
do so many organisations rely on extensive
internal hardware and software resources
when the internet exists to host everything
for you?
Increasingly, the internet is gaining
momentum as a service for running your
business – after all, like the National Grid,
it isn’t going to go away.
And for operational departments, such
as fleet, there are more and more ways you
can use the internet to run vehicles more
efficiently without any expensive hard-to-
implement internal infrastructures.
It’s this philosophy of ‘cloud
computing’ that is shaping the way IT
systems will be developed in future.
Martin Evans, sales director, of fleet
management software company Jaama,
explains: “Gmail, Hotmail, Google Docs and
Facebook are some examples of existing
cloud-based services: cloud computing is
the delivery of software as a service over
Cloud computing //
Should your head be in the clouds?the internet. So software, resources and
information are provided as a utility rather
than relying on an organisation’s own
servers, desktop computers or laptops.
“The benefits of cloud computing
include scalability, as it allows fleet
and IT departments to add or subtract
capacity as requirements dictate rather
than having to scramble to requisition
costly new hardware and software, usually
at short notice.
“Cloud computing also frees up internal
resources as it means storage and server
requirements need not be the concern of
the IT department, allowing them to focus
on more business-critical tasks.
“Additionally, with the company’s data
safely stored in secure data centres rather
than servers in your employer’s computer
room, losing power or failed hardware
doesn’t mean data is at risk so there is no
requirement for a disaster recovery plan.”
A route to cutting costs
The number one benefit of cloud
computing is in saving costs, as all the
infrastructure investment is typically
provided by third-party suppliers.
Paul Jackson, product development
manager at fleet management
software provider Mycompanyfleet,
says: “Maintenance of cloud computing
applications is easier, because they do not
need to be installed on each user’s computer.
Users simply access the solution via their
chosen web browser, regardless of location or
what device they are using. So this could be a
PC or a smartphone, for example.” To f i n d o u t m o r e a b o u t i n t e r n e t a c c e s s

Operational benefits
Principally, cloud computing allows
easier development of systems that suit
perfectly your requirements in terms
of fleet management information and
communication.
There’s no need for bespoke software to
be written that operates with your company’s
internal IT, which can take time and be
expensive to install.
And as technology gets ever smarter,
the link between operator, vehicle and
driver will be even more detailed using
cloud computing, allowing businesses to
clearly understand the costs and effects
of its fleet decisions.
For example, systems that allow company
cars and vans to book their own repair and
maintenance appointments could become
practicable before the end of the decade.
According to e-commerce provider, epyx, one
of the key enablers of this kind of technology
is now becoming more commonplace –
vehicles having their own dedicated mobile
internet access, such as the Audi A8, new
A5 and A6.
Ken Trinder, head of business
development at epyx, the company
behind 1link, said: “In many cases, vehicles
are now capable of self-diagnosis in terms
of both regular and unplanned service and
maintenance.
“There is no reason why a car will not be
able to communicate its needs through a
mobile internet link to an external booking
mechanism, authorise work required with the
fleet operator and check directly with dealer
workshop diaries to find available dates.”
Paul Jackson believes mobile
communication between business and

Audi’s ongoing development of in-car high-speed broadband services, pioneered in the A8 L (above), has
enabled a high-specification mobile phone interface offering online services to become available as an
option in most models in the Audi range.
Not only does this offer navigation using Google Earth® images and a Google®-powered Points of
Interest search, but it also converts the car’s interior into a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) hotspot,
enabling occupants to connect phones and computers to the internet wirelessly.
Selecting Mobile Telephone Preparation – high as an option, in conjunction with the Technology
Package with online services, enables a Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phone with SIM Access profile to be
connected to the car’s internal UMTS module, enabling a Wi-Fi hotspot within the car for internet access
using, for example, a laptop or iPad.
vehicle will continue to grow, and that
smartphones and tablets linked into cloud
fleet systems will become the norm.
He added: “At the same time, motor
manufacturers are looking at ways in which
they can enhance smartphone applications to
interact with their vehicles, so expansion in
this market place is inevitable.
“For some fleets this is already
happening. Police forces around the world,
for example, have been using a level of car-
to-office communications for some time,
as their patrol cars act as mobile offices for
verifying personal and vehicle details.
“For fleet managers the benefits are
myriad. Imagine if you could press a button
on the dash which would send journey data
directly to a web-based fleet management
solution, including mileage, average mpg,
fuel usage, and carbon emissions.”
This data would be accessible on any
device, and would provide the fleet manager
with vital information on the fleet’s operating
costs, keep an eye on the state of vehicles,
while allowing employees to send messages
to colleagues in cars.
The cloud-connected fleet is fast
becoming reality.

Following the recent launch of the sleek latest-generation Audi
A5 Coupé, Sportback and Cabriolet models, highly specified
new SE Technik derivatives join the Coupé and Sportback ranges,
adding even greater desirability for 2012.
SE Technik models add DVD-based satellite navigation, Audi
parking system plus, Audi Music Interface and cruise control as
standard on top of the SE’s already generous equipment list, which
includes Milano leather trim, 17” alloy wheels, automatic headlights
and wipers, deluxe 3-zone climate control and Bluetooth® interface.
TDIe technology enables CO2 emissions from 115g/kmAll SE Technik models are powered by Audi’s acclaimed
2.0 TDI engine, which, dependent on model, offers no fewer than
four power outputs ranging from 136PS to 177PS.
Key to the new engine line-up are two extra-efficient
2.0 TDIe units developing 136PS (Sportback only) and 163PS
(Coupé and Sportback), with CO2 emissions starting from just
115g/km for the A5 Coupé 2.0 TDIe 163PS.
And as the new A5 Sportback 2.0 TDIe 136PS models emit
just 117g/km of CO2, both fall into the 17% BIK tax banding in
2012/13, ensuring attractively low company car tax liabilities.
Furthermore, combined fuel consumption of up to 64.2mpg
puts the A5 Coupé and Sportback models among best in class
for fuel economy.
P11D prices for the new A5 SE Technik models start from £30,335
for the A5 Sportback 2.0 TDIe 136PS SE Technik, a premium of
£1,000 RRP over SE. Meanwhile, the A5 Coupé 2.0 TDIe SE Technik is
available from £30,990 (P11D price), a £500 RRP premium over SE.
