DESCRIPTION

Purpose & Objectives This presentation intends to provide background and tangible models of how the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative and the associated data data elements and recommended vocabulary are being used by several initiatives including the Learning Registry and the Sahred Learning Collaborative. Several states and school districts have efforts underway to use the LRMI to tag the instructional resources they use so they can be more easily found. Participants should have some very basic knowledge of how metadata makes content discoverable, however, no knowledge is required of the algorithms used to generate a search result. Outline 1. Introduction to the problems associated with search and discussion of selected use cases (10 min) 2. Presentation about the LRMI specification and how it differs from other metadata specifications (10 min) 3. Presentation by a participating content publisher as to how they make use of the LRMI open standard and their expectations for how it will improve access to their resources. (5 min) 4. Presentation by a practicing educator as to how they are creating and interacting with LRMI metadata, the role it plays in addressing diverse student needs and the CCSS. (10 min) 5. Presentation and demonstration by another publisher of how they are making use of LRMI metadata and the role the Learning Registry plays in how they support educators. (5 min) 6. Wrap-up and Q&A (20 min) Supporting Research There are several papers in press about the LRMI which will be available in March 2013. There are also several papers about the Learning Registry and the relationship to the LRMI data specification: Bienkowski and Klo. Forthcoming. The Learning Registry: Applying Social Metadata for Learning Resource Recommendations. in Nikos Manouselis, Katrien Verbert, Hendrik Drachsler and Olga C. Santos, Eds. Recommender Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning: Research Trends & Applications, Heidelberg: Springer Lee A, Hobson, J. Bienkowski, M. Midgley, S. Currier, S Campbell L M, Novoseova, T. 2012. Towards Networked Knowledge: The Learning Registry, an Infrastructure for Sharing Online Learning Resources. Educational Technology. V. 52, N. 6. November-December. pp 14-19. Presenter Background Michael Jay, Educational Systemics: Has presented at ISTE for nearly a decade. Ex-classroom teacher now heads an organization that is committed to systemic and sustainable change in how we learn and teach. Michael and his team lead the grant funded LRMI proof-of-concept for the AEP. Michael has spoken on this and related topics in the US and Internationally.

Cengage Learning & LRMI

Contributing to maximizing the educational community’s ability to locate resources

Friday, July 26, 13

Page 50: The New Age of (Web) Discovery: New Resource Metadata Standards (ISTE 2013)

Why participate?

v Looking to support any effort which enables the identification of the most

appropriate and effective choice of learning material

v Increase the discoverability and value of our educationally relevant,

instructionally effective resources during web search engine searches.

§ Ability to have our learning materials surface above the mass of web pages

with seemingly relevant keywords, but no useful learning materials.

v Accelerate movement toward personalized learning

Friday, July 26, 13

Page 51: The New Age of (Web) Discovery: New Resource Metadata Standards (ISTE 2013)

How Cengage is Implementing

v Created a crosswalk between existing Cengage internal standard metadata framework and *required* LRMI

§ Discovered significant overlap (resource title, locator, description, subject, publication/creation date, creator/author, publisher, language, etc…)

v For the existing metadata:

§ Most likely will programmatically populate equivalent LRMI fields with values from existing metadata fields, revising vocabularies as/if needed

v For the new metadata:

§ Cost/benefit analysis of adding and populating additional metadata fields

§ For example: § Competency name/title (e.g. Literacy.CCRA.R.10)§ Educational Framework (e.g. Common Core State Standards)

Friday, July 26, 13

Page 52: The New Age of (Web) Discovery: New Resource Metadata Standards (ISTE 2013)

How Cengage is Implementing

v Content tagging (indexing)

§ Determining the balance between remediation of legacy content and focusing on new content

v Review and revise Cengage Editorial Policies as needed

v Revise Cengage Metadata Registry

v Provide support for compliance with standards

§ Awareness campaign among Global Product Technology teams

§ Perhaps enhanced QC

§ Create additional job aids

Friday, July 26, 13

Page 53: The New Age of (Web) Discovery: New Resource Metadata Standards (ISTE 2013)

Open Questions and Unexpected Consequences

v How will we measure success?

§ Is it worth tracking online sales initiated from a catalog hit on a Web search engine?

§ Does the nominal level of effort warrant a success measure?

v Generated more discussion regarding what is the “smallest unit of content” we will sell

§ If we’re working to respond to a more granular level of educational need, do we also need to make our content available at that level?

§ What are the implications of that decision on how we manage our assets?
