Maness grew up in Colorado buttraveled every summer to hismother’s hometown of Atchison,Kansas. It was these visits thatsparked his interest in his Irishimmigrant great-greatgrandparents and other Kansassettlers. “I soon discovered thatthis town was founded byMissourians intent on makingKansas a Slave State in the1850s, that it was a violentbeginning, that Atchison isindeed known for its hauntings, and that my maternal great-greatgrandparents, Patrick and MariaMullins, settled just outside townsometime in the late 1850s orearly 1860s. Like most Irish-Americans, they had fled thefamine and oppression of theirhomeland, risked everything, andfound a way to survive. Forfamilies such as mine, Kansaswas probably seen as their last, best hope, and her violentbeginnings were something to beoutlasted. And outlast it theydid.” (http://jackmarshallmaness.com/about-me)
