TRANSCRIPT
Naklo is a 70bhp 0-6-0 steam
tender locomotive built in Poland
in 1957 for work at a sugar beet
collective.
The Naklo Project
She was brought to the UK by the
South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society
in 1988 and in 2001 was rebuilt with
an enlarged cab and footplate and
her side tanks were removed.
1988: Naklo arrives
Naklo was in service at South Tynedale Railway
until 2010.
She ran the 2.5. miles to and from Alston
to Kirkhaugh.
When the line was extended to Lintley Halt in 2012
Naklo was removed from service as her lack of power
and adhesive weight made her unsuitable to haul
trains on the newly extended line.
Naklo at Gilderdale in 2003
Thanks to grant funding from the Power to Change Community Business Fund, our Engineering
Team of staff and volunteers began the journey to restore Naklo to service and create a
railway experience package for visitors to enjoy.
In 2017….
Her restoration provides a wealth of training and education opportunities.
Some of our younger volunteers (STRIVERS) have been involved in stripping Naklo down.
And older volunteers have been involved too…
Work began by stripping Naklo
down…
And in 2018 we began to rebuild her…
Water tanks under construction
As part of this project we have been able to employ an apprentice.
In February 2019 Peter began to make a new ash pan using the old ash pan as a guide…
There was great excitement in February 2019 when the new boiler arrived.
Huge thanks to Terry Statham (TRS Boiler Makers) for his fine workmanship
Work continues!
Our engineering staff and volunteers are always happy
to chat about what they are working on.
