Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is one of a few medical graduate schools in Japan that has integrated three faculties; the former School of Medicine, the oldest medical school in Japan with a history of more than 150 years (the only medical school in the world that has directly experienced the atomic bomb), the former School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, founded in 1889 and one of the oldest pharmaceutical schools in Japan, (Nobel Prize winner Dr. Osamu Shimomura is an alumnus!), and finally the Faculty of Dental Sciences, one of the newest schools of dentistry in Japan.
