For the reservists and Team Redstone it’s a win-win.

Less than a mile away from the gates of Redstone Arsenal, when it comes time to drill for the Army Reserve 375th Engineer Company, they needn’t go far. Partnering with Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, when Family and MWR needs a helping hand with a project, there’s Soldiers who are ready to help.

“We’re saving the Army money and we’re providing experience for the Soldiers within their MOS (military occupation specialty),” Capt. Benjamin Maney, company commander, said. “My unit is a vertical unit, so we have carpenters, plumbers and electricians that we put to work out there.”

Keeping in close contact with Family and MWR, the company keeps a running list of projects they can help out with when they have time during drill weekends.

Reserve lends helping hand to Family and MWR

“It gives us an opportunity to not only train our Soldiers, but also use our equipment,” Maney said. “If they have projects for us we like to take them on.”

Their projects have been plentiful – for Outdoor Recreation alone they’ve upgraded the skinning shed, widened and cleaned up the archery range, run conduit and electricity to the back boat pavilions, removed dead and diseased trees from the campground, removed broken and damaged cement picnic tables, and resurfaced the gravel at the RV Park. Other projects have included painting at The Summit, shrubbery work at the library and taking out some larger trees near Gate 9.

“The U.S. Army reservists have provided valuable onsite construction and restoration here at MWR Outdoor Recreation,” Monique Dykstra, assistant business manager for Outdoor Recreation, said. “It’s been a pleasure assisting with training, while reaping the rewards of their expertise and skills. It’s a win-win situation.”
