THE MVA A CREATIVE STUDIO SPECIALIZING IN GRAPHIC DESIGN, CONTENT DEVELOPMENT AND IMAGE-MAKING.

ABOUT Formed in 2003 by Kimberlee Whaley and J. Namdev Hardisty, we write and edit books, design for print and web and create images for clients and collaborators like Mark Batty Publisher, Analog Clothing, Mike Perry Studio, Knock Inc., Princeton Architectural Press and Minneapolis College Of Art & Design (MCAD).

RECENT ACTIVITY Two books written and designed by The MVA have been released by Mark Batty Publisher this year. DIY Album Art: Paper Bags & Office Supplies and New Skateboard Graphics are in stores now.

Our first issue as art directors of the MCAD Magazine is coming out in July. The magazine is a collaboration with MCAD Design Works, the student design studio at our alma mater MCAD.

Kimberlee Whaley was awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board grant to continue her work on the winter landscape project “Plateau”. For more information, visit Kim’s new website www.kimberleewhaley.com where you can also download a PDF zine of recent photography.

Two collages by J. Namdev Hardisty were featured in the exhibition “Cut It Out” at Open Space gallery in Beacon NY. The show was curated by Mike Perry and featured works by such artists as Dan Funderburgh, Justin Fines, Dan Black, Gluekit and Hardland/Heartland. Namdev is also featured in Mike’s most recent book “Over & Over: A Catalog of Hand-drawn Patterns”.

WE ARE CURRENTLY ACCEPTING PHOTOGRAPHY AND DESIGN COMMISSIONS, AS WELL AS EXHIBITION OR SPEAKING OPPORTUNITIES. To work with us, please call or e-mail Kimberlee Whaley or Namdev Hardisty.

To create a note-worthy book in a market crowded with skate and urban art books, we opted for a clean “technical” design that would contrast with the more grunge-y design that dominates this area.

The cover features a UV-varnish to mimic a clear sticker on a skateboard.

New skateboard GRAPHICS book

“New Skateboard Graphics” celebrates contemporary visuals for skateboarding by showcasing over 400 illustrations and 20 interviews with skate artists and designers. The book was authored by The MVA and published by Mark Batty Publisher.

Packaging for a series of “digital ready-mades” by experimental musician, Cages. The hands-off approach of the artist is reflected through an academic and restrained typographic system.

HARDISTY-DISK: GHOST CALL 12”

In 2003, our Hardisty-Disk record label released the 12” ep “Ghost Call” by LA noise artist John Wiese in a simple fold-over cover with four-color screenprinting. For the 2008 re-launch, we remixed the packaging, simplifying it to 2 colors and adding more layers to the packaging including a full-interior print of an image from Kim’s “MonoWood” series.

HARDISTY-DISK: RELEASE POSTER

Hardisty-Disk releases batches of limited-edition cd’s, vinyl records and t-shirts on a quarterly basis. These posters are mailed out to friends of the label to announce the next editions.

supreme mathematics series

Series of four typographic posters exploring the forced overlap of many passions: ideological Swiss typography, contemporary mixtape rap and inspirational messages. Like Josef Müller-Brockmann, Slim Thug and Benjamin Franklin met up for a beer.

The project was executed as 22.5x35” art prints and a 7.5x10” “cubicle” set. Each item uses a different spot color for the slogans.
