MPAC Forum: Muslim-Americans Helping Law Enforcement Keep Nation SafeBy Hiba AkhtarMuslim Link Staff Writer

The Muslim Public Affairs Council held a forum entitled “Muslims, Law, and National Security,” on Capitol Hill on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, to discuss the relationship between the Muslim-American community and members of the law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels.

Speakers at the event included Peter Bergen, CNN Analyst and Director of the National Security Studies Program at the New America Foundation; Sheriff Lee Baca of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and founder of the Muslim American Homeland Security Congress; and Roger Cressey, professor at Georgetown University and the former director for transnational threats at the National Security Council (NSC), among others.

The event was intended to be a step towards a larger MPAC goal of ensuring the presence of a Muslim American perspective into the national discourse on the topic of what the relationship is and should be between Muslim Americans and American law enforcement. Some

of the questions discussed during the event brought to light various other issues, including what role Muslims play in aiding law enforcement to combat violent extremism, how members of law enforcement should address Muslim Americans, and what the communication should be like between both groups.

During his address, Sheriff Baca described the ideal relationship between Muslims and law enforcement. “It’s all about relationship and it’s all about friendship,” said Baca. “Public trust, to me, is not prophesizing the community we’ve got. But to give the community the linkage to us- that if they feel threatened by something suspicious such as a young man becoming radical in his conversation, they will feel comfortable coming to us and saying, ‘You know what? You will know what to do.”

According to Baca, working towards an ideal relationship between the Muslim community and law enforcement was the motive behind the development of the Muslim-American Homeland Security Congress. Baca worked with members of MPAC, the Muslim-Amerian Society, the Islamic Shia Council of Southern California, the American

Muslims Association and other Muslim organizations to communicate that Muslims were a part of the protected population of America, and to address the issue of strengthening the relationship between Muslims and law enforcement in Southern California, which is home to one of the greatest populations of Asian society.

According to Alejandro Beutal, a government and policy analyst at MPAC and a speaker at the forum, these are just

steps which are being taken to address a greater need, not just for the Muslim community to establish a relationship with law enforcement, but to establish a relationship with lawmakers, public figures, and other aspects of American law. “We as Muslim Americans have a civic and moral obligation to get involved with the political process and other law figures, because, as a community and religion, we care about the people that we

A burgeoning but sprawling Muslim community looking for ways to ease the daily commute to the masajid is seeing more and more “musallas” appear in the region – small rental halls or converted homes used for the five daily prayers.

The latest up and coming musalla is located on Veirs Mill Road in Silver Spring, Maryland, midway between the Islamic Center of MD in Gaithersburg and the Muslim Community Center. The musalla, which is not yet open due to permitting issues related to the parking lot and storm water management, will serve Muslims in the Wheaton, Rockville, and nearby vicinities.

Taiyab Mohiuddin, a member of the trustees, said the Veirs Mill musalla – officially called the Islamic Education Society of Maryland – was purchased a few years ago by a local female doctor who donated the $230,000 house on a

half-acre lot to be used as a musalla. At this stage, the musalla will not hold Friday prayers, said Mohiuddin. If the community is able to acquire adjacent homes then Friday prayers might be considered, he added. The current lot has 9 parking spaces, just enough for 27 prayer attendees. The musalla will hold small Qur’anic teaching sessions in addition to the daily prayers. So far over $100,000 has been spent in construction and engineering related costs; about 80% of the work is completed.

“We need a small musalla everywhere … this is totally for the sake of Allah, if you have a desire for [the next life] then Allah will fulfill your desire,” said Mohiuddin. Some Muslim professionals have already volunteered their help for free or discounted rates to help complete the build-out, including an electrician.

SISTERS Seeks Solutions for Single MuslimsBy Muslim Link Staff

Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) told us marriage is half of faith. For many singles today, it seems like completing that half is a full-time job that can take years to accomplish.

While the local area has several annual or semi-annual events designed for Muslim men and women to find potential spouses, still many wait years or even decades to find the right person. For single Muslim women – who outnumber men and cannot marry outside the Muslim community – the challenge is even more pronounced.

“There seems to be a huge disconnect in our communities when it comes to helping others to find a spouse“, said Laurie Jaghlit, Chair of the Northern Virginia-based group Sisters in Solidarity to Educate, Respond and Serve (SISTERS).

Many single sisters have voiced their frustrations to SISTERS leadership about the difficulty of finding a good practicing Muslim brother for marriage. “These are beautiful, highly-educated, sincere Muslimahs of all ages and backgrounds,” she added. SISTERS decided to try to do something to help.

First, SISTERS decided that they had to understand why this seems to be a growing problem in our area. “The first thing we did was to hold a small, informal focus group with single women to see what their experiences had been and what avenues they had used in their search for a mate. We found that many had attended classes and get-togethers at local masajid but often found them to be too group centered or found that they would see the same faces time and time again. Several had tried the Internet matrimonial sites and others were aware of magazine and newspaper matrimonial ads. They found

that these were not safe and found that often people were not always truthful on the Internet sites. We discussed the good and bad with each and then developed a list of alternatives.

“Then, we compiled a survey to reach out to other singles, both men and women, to see what they have tried. We also wanted to test some ideas that the focus group came up with for alternative ways to meet others in a halal atmosphere. The survey will run until Feb 28, 2011 and we hope that we will be able to get a better picture as to the how to take this initiative to the next step,” explained Sister Laurie.

Observations from social service committees at area masajid point to the fact that reverts to Islam have an even harder time finding mates due to their lack of family connections and networks within the Muslim community. Muslim men have to option of marrying a Jewish

or Christian women – although area Imams discourage it and cite many broken marriages resulting from not having faith bonds between the spouses – and they can also go overseas to more easily to find women from their home countries. Muslim women in the local area end up in a tough position. Some Muslim women also cite the lack of men who combine religiosity with maturity and stability.

Married Muslim couples need to get involved to help serve a fast growing single population of mostly women, said Sister Laurie, who suggested local Muslims hold a conference to discuss solutions to the problem.

and voices of ethnic media and the communities they serve to a wider audience.” Over 3,000 media outlets covering 150 languages are linked through New America Media.

“We celebrate our collective endeavors even as we single out our individual winners … tonight we celebrate together,” said Sandy Close, Executive Director of New American Media, opening the awards dinner. The dinner was free for all attendees.

The DC chapter of New America Media established a partnership with American University’s School of Communication which co-hosted the event; the partnership fosters greater engagement between main stream and minority media, and also opens doors for training to ethnic and minority media professionals. AU Professor Angie Chuang said the partnership with NAM is “one of our most vibrant” and helps AU “teach truly inclusive journalism”.

Alex Moe, the DC Director for New America Media, marveled at how large the annual awards ceremony has become. “The DC-MD-VA area is fast on the heels of California” in the number of ethnic media outlets operating, she said.

In 2009, the Muslim Link took first place in New America Media’s national competition with reporter Farkhunda Ali’s piece telling the story of an elderly Palestinian woman and her memories of leaving her homeland. The piece took first place in International Affairs.

“These awards help motivate our staff to do the important work they’re

doing,” said Muslim Link editor Minhaj Hasan. “It helps renew our energy when we see so many other communities working hard to speak for themselves and to document their own history. We thank NAM and American University for recognizing our work,” he added.

Other winners at this year’s DC Ethnic Media Awards included Jewish “Moment Magazine” for Best Investigative Reporting for their story on the education system in Israel; and Zethiopia in the Best International Reporting category for their piece on the discrimination Ethiopian women face in Lebanon. Media outlets representing the African-American, Hispanic, Korean, Iranian, Indo-Pakistani and Nepalese communities also took home awards and honorable mentions.

The evening closed with a special tribute to Hazel Trice Edney, the President and CEO of Trice Edney News Wire, for her decades supporting independent media. Edney delivered a charged keynote address, frequently mentioning the recent protests in Egypt, focusing on the importance of the work ethnic and minority media outlets are doing. She said much of the work being done by community media outlets involves pushing back

against injustice and racism. Closing with a reference to African-American abolitionist Frederick Douglas, Edney said “let us never cease to agitate, agitate, agitate” to a standing ovation. As long as community journalism continues this fight, we are all winners, she said.

live with,” he said. Beutal added that a better sense of education and awareness is also needed by both sides- Muslims have a responsibility to practice and be fully aware of their rights, and members of the law enforcement have a responsibility to provide protection to

Muslim Americans as they would to any other group, treating Muslims as they would treat all Americans.

In an effort to fulfill its goal to encourage Muslim Americans to get involved further with the political process and establish a civic engagement, MPAC offers “I Am Change” workshops, which can be organized throughout the country in an effort to provide Muslim

communities with the tools needed to establish an effective presence within American society. These workshops are aimed at providing a deeper understanding of the inner workings of local, state, and federal government and the relationship of the individual with it. INITIAL REACTIONS TOTHE PROTESTS

Amr Awad, a Supervisory Patent Examiner, attended the MAS celebration with his wife and children. “Those shabab (youth) realized they had a common goal and that’s that they are under one tyrant and want to get rid of him” he said. “They looked at what united them.”

Like many others, initially he had doubts as to whether the protests would succeed. “I had a mixed reaction of fear and hope. We hope to reach the sky but you realize it’s very hard to happen. At the beginning I thought Hosni would never give up. As it progressed my hope increased.”

Salmaa Elshanshory, a Fellow at the U.S. Public Interest Research Group and a young Egyptian American, celebrated in front of the Egyptian embassy. She said that “Ironically enough, when the Tunisia protests began I told my parents ‘what if this happened in Egypt?’ My father cynically said we would go back to Egypt. It did happen.” Elshanshory’s reaction was a sense of pride that the people took their complaints to the streets. “And even as I watched and thought of a huge possibility that this would be a repeat of the protests in 2009, I felt that the people were suddenly empowered” she said.

Dar Al-Hijrah’s Imam Shaker Elsayed, an Egyptian American, whom we spoke to via telephone said: “Everybody held their breath because nobody knew whether the regime would use brutal force and when. This is not the first time the Egyptian people revolted against this regime but this is the first time the people persisted and this is the first time it was all over the nation. The Egyptians ran out of patience with a very repressive regime that was unresponsive to any need or desire for change.”

Merehan Elhady, a young Egyptian American mother was among those who celebrated at the MAS community center. She told us “I was pretty impressed by the protests. The college students are

always protesting. It’s only with the use of Facebook that it because a nationwide thing.” Social networks played an important role in mobilizing efforts. Now called the “Facebook Revolution,” many believe that the Egyptian revolution was not possible without it.“I was really afraid for our families. Everybody was just glued to the TV. When the first 3 martyrs died, we were pretty scared and the death numbers kept increasing, it really hit home it could have

been anyone of our family members. We began writing to Congress.”

On what Egyptians now refer to as Black Wednesday, February 2nd when Mubarak unleashed his thugs on camels and horseback, Awad thought that was the end of it. People were expecting protester numbers to dwindle that Friday. “But when I saw that Liberty square was full, I realized nobody could stop those people.”

Awad said that “on Friday January 28, one protester said that the people in the back could not hear the Imam during Friday prayer, so the Christians began to say “Allahu Akbar” when the Imam did so that the worshipers could hear. This revolution brought out the best of Egyptian and I hope it will bring out the best of all Muslims.”

THE FALL OF MUBARAK’S REGIME

“As days of protest continued and the

US started to put even more pressure I had no doubt he would step down,” said Elshanshory. “Then on Thursday he came out and read a speech saying he would not step down. I was blown away. I was angry and saddened.” When the news finally came that he would step down, Elshanshory was “overjoyed.” “Thirty seconds ended a thirty year regime. And he did not have the decency to do it himself. He is a coward,” she said.

THE MEDIA

Hailed as “The Voice of the Revolution,” all the interviewees agreed that Al Jazeera provided the best and most consistent coverage. Some followed CNN as well. “Anderson Cooper [from CNN] especially did a fantastic job ... I think he was emotionally involved in the sense that he felt what the protesters felt and I really appreciate that guy.” Said Awad

“I actually wrote a letter to thank Anderson

Cooper” said Elhady.

“When I read stories it was the New York Times and Washington Post,” said Elshanshory. “I believe all of these networks gave great coverage to the events going on. They had a plethora of outlooks and considered the most important voice that of the Egyptian people. I regained some confidence in media and felt like there was less of a sensationalism focus and more of a focus on the events happening on the ground.”

THE FUTURE OF EGYPT AND THE MIDDLE EAST

The military took power when Mubarak’s regime was brought to an end. They have dissolved parliament, pledging to hand over power in six months or once elections are held. Imam Shaker Elsayed is “leery” of the military being in political power. But considering the fact that the military was the only force that “removed such a sticky dictator like Mubarak, their standing with the people and not using force with the population even when they were very tempted to do so” is something we should give them credit for, said Imam Shaker. “I am confident that with the pressure and persistence of the revolution’s leadership the military will not stick around for long in power. I definitely hope the people will choose the representative government that comes from within the people and especially the working class, so that it doesn’t need pushing from the people to do the right thing as much as an elitist type of government would” he added.

“I feel extremely happy for the Egyptians for having liberated themselves by the will of Allah I hope that their best reaction to this would be to be grateful and to humble themselves before Him” by giving people the freedom to worship freely and to pay attention to the needs of the minorities, especially the Christians Copts, who have been targets of official government plots that sought to ignite sectarian violence between Christians and Muslims … I hope that the Muslims who rallied to protect Christians in their Mass last Sunday would rally to protect the Christians whether they are in positions of power or not,” added the Imam, whose congregation in Falls Church is the largest in the region.

Imam Shaker added a word to the American policy makers: “If America wants to be true to the Cairo speech given by our president, then the policy makers in Washington should restrain the CIA and the other government agencies from trying to manipulate, direct, or otherwise influence what is going on in the Middle East towards anybody’s interests except those of the people.”

Youth Project Management Workshop Held in VABy Liban SaifMuslim Link Contributing Writer

On January 1, 2011, Islamic Leadership Institute of America (ILIA) held a “Youth Project Management” workshop in collaboration with Nur Youth Café at the Nur Center in Falls Church, Virginia.

Headed and instructed by Ayman Nassar, founder and director of ILIA, and Mahmoud Abouelrous, the workshop’s program director, the workshop concentrated on brain-stimulating activities that forced the 30 plus attendees to think as critical project managers. Immediately after being taught risk, cost, scope, scheduling, procurement, communications, and other project management essentials, the attendees were broken up into teams and worked on finding the project and product scope of an item, deliberating on a cost estimate for a product, and planning out the establishment of a full dormitory for college students.

“The project youth management workshop is a very interactive workshop that taught youth like me how to manage

projects in the best way possible,” commented Feisel Abdurrahman, an attendee from Riverdale, Maryland. The workshop differed from other secular youth leadership workshops in that it also provided Islamic concepts through reflection on various Qur’anic verses and Ahadith throughout the workshop. Reflections such as the planning process of Dhul-Qarnayn, a celebrated leader in the Qur’an, were made and emphasized to the students.

Attendees were impressed with the academic instruction and exciting environment provided with having two simultaneous instructors. Noor Nahavandi, President of the Student Government Association (SGA) at Al-Huda High School, remarked, “Unlike regular, bland seminars with endless hours of speeches and seminars, the Youth Project Management workshop takes a unique approach to molding leaders by gearing the lessons towards the youth and their interests. In the end, I walked away with a new, broader outlook on leadership and how to properly utilize it.”

“I would recommend anyone to definitely give this class a try because our present day leaders won’t be around forever, and pretty soon, the youth of today are going to have big shoes to fill tomorrow”.

“The Egyptian people will not all of sudden be empowered and gain all the freedoms of those of us who live in real democracies, however their future is much brighter than their past and they have set a new precedent,” said Elshanshory. “The people have the power to change. Who will be next? Anyone who steps into power

will know their fate if they chose to repeat history. The future government is hard to foresee, but it will be one that will be much more representative of the people. Democracy has to start somewhere. My vote is for ElBaradei – a level headed man whose international experiences can only strengthen his leadership and allow him to set a precedent for leaders within the Middle East.”

Elhady believes this is where it will

become harder for the Egyptian people, but she has faith in the youth and she believes that they will manage. A large percentage of the population is under the age of 25. Many are hopeful that the changes in Tunisia and in Egypt will spread to other Middle Eastern Countries. The effects are

already being felt across the Arab world as protests were held across different nations, all demanding an end to their corrupt regimes. Yemenis, Algerians, Libyans, and Bahrainis among others have been emboldened by the success of the Egyptian people and a peaceful revolution. The fate of Egypt and the rest of the Arab world is yet to be seen, but as Elshanshory stated: “This event was not just historic for Egypt, it was significant for the entire world.”

With Hosni Mubarak gone, let’s do a little Egyptian math on the Mubarak years.

According to experts, the fortune amassed by Egypt’s former president and his two sons (both billionaires) could reach $70 billion. That includes funds in secret offshore bank accounts and investments in residences and real-estate properties reaching from Rodeo Drive in Beverley Hills to Wilton Place in central London and Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheik tourist resort. Since Mubarak has been president for 30 years, he’s put that little fortune together at a record clip -- something like $2

billion or more a year. He and his family are now worth approximately four times the gross domestic product (GDP) of Paraguay, five times the GDP of embattled Afghanistan, and more than ten times the GDP of Laos. He may be the richest man and they the richest family on Earth. All this happened, by the way, in the years when millions of Egyptians -- at least one in every 10 -- lost their farms, while more than 40% of Egyptians live on less than $2 a day.

And let’s just mention a few others in the cast of characters who let the good times roll and made a few bucks off the reign of the Mubarak family: steel magnate and ruling party insider Ahmed Ezz, for

instance, managed to eke out a $3 billion fortune, while former Interior Minister Habib Ibrahim El-Adly scraped by with a near-rock-bottom $1.2 billion. And they are just two of at least five much-loathed Mubarak cronies who reportedly crossed the billion-dollar mark in these years.

As for a trio of Washington lobbyists -- former Republican representative Bob Livingston, former Democratic representative Toby Moffett, and mover-and-shaker Tony Podesta -- who bravely hired themselves out to the Mubarak regime, they made chump change: reportedly a mere $1 million a year for their efforts. Who knows what Frank Wisner, the former ambassador sent to

Cairo by the Obama administration to give Mubarak the boot, made working for Patton, Boggs, a company which proudly boasts of the litigation work it’s done for Mubarak and company? Conflict of interest anyone?

Meanwhile, don’t forget the Egyptian military. It didn’t do so badly in the Mubarak years either. After all, according to one expert, it owns “virtually every industry in the country,” and it still managed to take in a handy $35 billion in “aid” from Washington since 1978.

President Obama is a smart man. When Gallup surveys suggest that unemployment is around 10 percent — and that unemployment plus underemployment is 19 percent of the workforce — then it’s clear that the best way to raise revenues and close the deficit is to put people back to work. President Obama surely knows this. But his actions don’t seem to follow this obvious logic. Why is that?

Part of the reason lies in a group of people who pour money into our political system but don’t necessarily want the same things that ordinary Americans want. In fact, some of these people benefit from municipal crises, breaking teachers unions, and increasing the fear of the workforce. They fall disproportionately

into the group that Harvard professor Lawrence Lessig identified as “the funders” in his recent TedX Talk in San Antonio, Texas. The increasing power of this group produces political contortions by buying results in Congress that do nothing for regular folks. Their influence also steers President Obama to focus on his reelection rather than trying to change the climate of opinion and become America’s Great Persuader. The public has now heard the conservative mantra that government is the problem and not the solution for 40 years. Couple that with the experience of valid rage following the bank bailouts, and it’s not surprising that the public overwhelmingly feels that the government has become an instrument of the wealthy and powerful. Strong leadership is needed to challenge this

narrative. But the President seems content to conform to the prevailing suspicion of government. He fails to convince the public that the government can have an active response to the jobs crisis — a response that benefits them, not monied interests.

And that suits many funders in the top

3 percent of the wealth distribution just fine.With profits so high and so many slack resources, it is sad that President Obama continues on the path of “triangulation” and chooses to “pre-concede” so much to the Republicans. In electoral terms, the breaking of all of the unions at the state and local level will serve to benefit the Republican party in many regions and exacerbate inequality. It is surprising the the President does not resist this for the benefit of his own party’s future.

But Presidents often fly solo rather than represent their party when reelection looms — especially in a post-Citizens United world that will be influenced by unprecedented rivers of money.

Looking forward, we can see that our infrastructure is worn out in many, many places. We can also see that a dearth of public goods, education, basic science and infrastructure portend a weakening of the living standard of our nation. President Obama seemed to acknowledge this in

his State of the Union address vision. But his budget strategy does not. The current budgets, both Democrat and Republican, appear to be imposing cuts on the lower middle class and poor. We are, as Paul Krugman said in the New York Times on Monday, eating our future.

Unfortunately, the proposed budget appears more likely to contribute to the ongoing widening of wealth and income inequality. And it seems more likely to increase, rather than reduce, the idle resources in our society. This budget logic makes little sense, and the human costs are dreadful. Only the logic of power sheds light on our path of dysfunction in the USA. Andrew Mellon must be smiling.

As for ordinary Egyptians who protested the devolving state of their country? Estimates of the number of political prisoners in Egypt’s grim jails have varied over the years from 6,000 to 17,000. Their well-being was overseen by former head of intelligence Omar Suleiman. Since Egypt was a “torture destination of choice” for the Bush administration’s Global War on Terror, Suleiman happily oversaw that program, too, as Mubarak’s torturer-in-chief. Appointed vice president by his pal, Suleiman was the “democrat” the Obama administration seemed ready to back until recently to manage the “transition to democracy.”

All in all, should we wonder that such a torturing kleptocracy on the Nile is now being shaken to its foundations and that another spirit, a spirit of democracy, freedom, and justice, is rising in the region?

YORBA LINDA – Several hundred people from as far away as Corona and the San Fernando Valley filled the lawn outside the Yorba Linda Community Center Sunday afternoon and lined Imperial Highway in response to a fundraising event by a Queens, N.Y.-based Muslim group Islamic Circle of North America Relief USA.

People started gathering about 3 p.m., two-and-a-half hours before the fundraiser began. Many in the crowd waved U.S. flags and carried signs saying, “God Bless America” and “No Sharia Law,” in reference to Islam’s sacred law. In the

afternoon, the event had the atmosphere of a July 4 picnic. Many brought lawn chairs and blankets, sang patriotic songs and tied red, white and blue bandanas on their dogs.

As the fundraiser started, a splinter group of about 100 stood about 50 yards from the community center entrance and booed, yelled “go home” and chanted “no Sharia law” as attendees entered the building. Among their signs were ones that said “ICNA supports Hamas and Hezbollah.”

ICNA spokesman Syed Waqas said the protesters “should know the facts. We have no links to any overseas organization. We absolutely denounce violence and terrorism.”

He said the group started in Southern California about eight months ago and is trying to raise $350,000 to start social programs such as women’s shelters, fighting hunger and homelessness in the area.

About 300 were expected to attend the event. Admission was $25.

One of the attendees, Khwaja Ahmad, said he was surprised by the protests. “I am supporting the group because they are raising money for the beggar women.”

A woman attendee who declined to give her name said, “It is surprising, but everyone has a right to express their opinion.”

Many in the crowd outside the event said they were concerned about past anti-American statements by the event’s two keynote speakers, Imam Siraj Wahhaj and Amir Abdel Malik Ali. Wahhaj is an imam at a mosque in Brooklyn. A U.S. attorney named him and 169 others as co-conspirators in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Wahhaj was never charged and has denied involvement.

Malik Ali is a Bay Area Islamic activist who spoke at “Israeli Apartheid Week” at UC Irvine in 2010. There he said he supports Hezbollah, which the CIA labels

Mooz-lum Coming of Age Film Resonates with Muslim-Americans

“MOOZ-lum” is a coming-of-age film chronicling the life of Tariq Mahdi, a college freshman from an African-American Muslim home struggling with his identity as a Muslim and how it fits in with the rest of his life. Mahdi’s interactions with Muslims hit every stereotype imaginable- a well-meaning, but complex father unrelenting in his desire for his only son to become a hafiz at a young age, a religious, slightly naïve roommate visible disapproving of Tariq’s flirtations with the alcohol-fueled social circuit of college, and a younger sister who wanted to have fun and couldn’t understand why her brother was so different all of a sudden.

An innate desire to distinguish himself from his traumatic past leads Tariq to request for others to call him “T,” and to pursue a relationship with Ayanna, a girl who lives in the same hall and who is one of the only characters in the film, apart from Tariq’s mother, who shows a desire to really understand him. College visits from his sister and interactions with his religion professor, who also turns out to be the chaplain for the Muslim Students

Association on campus, nudge him closer towards Islam, while memories of abuse from a ruthless hifdh school principal and a growing disconnect with his father lead him away from it.

The back-and-forth struggle o f I s l a m i c i d e n t i t y i s depicted also through the relationship between MSA chaplain Professor Jamal and Dean Quincy Francis, played by veteran actor Danny Glover. Glover sees Jamal as a reflection of himself

when he was younger, but sees his open Muslim identity as a fault. Jamal refuses to “silence” his beliefs. The struggle between these two characters becomes the external counterpart to Tariq’s internal conflict in the film.

According to NPR, director Qasim Bashir wrote MOOZ-lum as a loosely autobiographical film. Tired of seeing negative portrayals of Muslims in the media, Bashir wanted to express the human experiences connected the Muslim identity. “Being that I was raised very different than what’s represented as what Islam or Muslims are supposed to be, I had to write something about it that showed the human perspective of a people, of a culture, of faith,” he said.

In the film, Tariq’s journey with Islam builds and reflects a growing inconsistency between his desire to forget and move on from his painful memories connected to Islam, such as his parents’ separation and the physical abuse he endured at the hifdh school; and his innate attraction to Islam, demonstrated by an emotional scene in which Tariq recites Qur’an at the urging of his sister to remember the good that comes from the faith.

Finally, with the 9/11 attacks in New York City, Tariq undergoes a spiritual awakening of sorts. His roommate and his sister are attacked and blamed for being Muslims and openly celebrating their faith. Tariq does not face backlash, he realizes, because he never let anyone know he is Muslim.

Suddenly everything is affected- his relationship with his family and his sense of identity. Tariq realizes the only way to overcome his tainted past is to confront it. The film leaves off with Tariq having gone through a revolution of sorts regarding his relationship with Islam, and finally stepping into his role as a Muslim youth.

Tariq’s internal conflict which serves as the basis for the film is one which resonated with some Muslims who attended screenings of the film at the AMC theaters in Alexandria, Va. Sharifa Husain, a young mother, came with her husband to watch the film once before allowing her son to watch it. “I was 17 when 9/11 happened,” said Husain. “And I remember never really feeling the need to evaluate my relationship with Islam, with Allah, before then. But afterwards, I realized that people could do anything in the name of Islam if they didn’t have the knowledge, so I it was up to me to really learn about what Islam was. That’s what this kid was going through.” When asked whether she felt the film was appropriate to show her 7-year-old son, Husain said “I think it is. All teens evaluate who they want to be and how they want to express themselves, but Muslim kids just need to realize that if they lose touch with Allah, they lose touch with themselves. I want my son to have that message.”

Eighteen-year-old Noor Kuraishi agreed. “I don’t think people realize that it isn’t

easy for Muslim kids. We mess up sometimes or make the wrong decisions, but we do it with a scarf on our heads so everyone knows you’re Muslim. I thought the movie was a little cliché about a few things, but other than that it highlighted the young Muslim-American’s experience, which was refreshing for us as young Muslim-American people.”

There were some moviegoers, however, who had less favorable opinions of the movie. “I decided to watch the movie because I heard it was a positive depiction of Muslim life,” said Hasan Rasooli, who attended the movie with non-Muslim friends. “There was not a lot said about the good of Islam. It was implied. I know the good of Islam because I was born Muslim, I know what it is like to live as a Muslim, and I know the good things about giving charity and praying and other Islamic practices. My friends and other non-Muslims don’t know that stuff. So, yeah, I got the message that 9/11 was hard for Muslims, but I didn’t really get the message of why Muslims are Muslim and what is so beautiful about the religion. That was a little disappointing.”

The film’s screenings in the Washington, DC area were partly sponsored by The Woolfolk Empowerment Foundation, an organization aimed at improving the lives of young women within the DC metropolitan area and in Africa. The themes of “MOOZ-lum” reflect what the Woolfolk Empowerment Foundation addresses in its various retreats and seminars- a sense of personal empowerment and tolerance.

In the name of Allaah, the Benevolent, the Merciful

All praise is due to Allaah, and may peace and blessings be upon the messenger of Allaah, his family, companions, and all those loyal to him.

Many questions have been directed to the assembly regarding the current situation in Egypt of protests, demonstrations, their aftermath, and the ruling on conducting demonstrations of solidarity and support of them here in America. Therefore, we would like assert certain principles in lieu of these events that we will be summarized in the following points:

1 – The Arab Republic of Egypt is the heart of the Arab and Islamic world and its civilization. Its rich, deep history is beyond need of being mentioned. Hence, safeguarding its security and resources is an integral part of Islam’s glory and that of the Muslims, and unraveling its security – may Allaah forbid – is a matter that isn’t accepted by a sensible person that is sincere to his religion and loyal to his nation. Having said that, it is upon the Egyptian government, as well as the protestors and their leadership, to keep these important fundamentals in mind when dealing with this crisis, ensuring that it is done in a manner that serves the people’s best interests. This is grounded in the established principle of the Islamic shariah that general welfare is to be given precedence over individual welfare.

2 – Injustice is appalling in all religions, for it is the core of all sins and the source of all evils. Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, even forbid injustice upon Himself and deemed it forbidden between His slaves, saying: ‘Oh My slaves, I have made injustice forbidden upon Myself, and made it forbidden between you, so do not wrong one another.’

3 – The obligation to give sincere advice, command good, and forbid evil are of the essential protocols of the religion. These are general obligations that no one is exempt from. Rather, it is mandatory upon the ruler and the ruled, the politician and the laymen. ‘The religion is (all about) advice.’ We said: ‘To whom, oh messenger of Allaah?’ He said: ‘For Allaah, His messenger, the leaders of the Muslims, and their masses.’ The obligation to obey those in leadership does not contradict establishing this obligation (of advising, command, and forbidding). Rather, it is part of the leader’s rights over his following (that he be advised by them).

4 – The methods of advising and showing disapproval of evils that are widespread, not those of individuals, are many, and vary depending on time, place, and condition. It could (at times) be done in the form of writing to the judicial and executive offices, writing to newspapers and magazines, speaking at lecture circles and places of assembly, and it may be privately or publicly done depending on the benefit and/or possible consequences of doing so.

5 – The sanctity of blood, wealth, and honor are of the primary aims of the religion. Our prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, began his address in the farewell sermon with this fact, reiterating it again in amidst his speech that day. He said: ‘Do not return to being disbelievers after me, striking one another’s necks (i.e. with your swords).’ And the Muslims are unanimously agreed that compulsion to kill does not deem it permissible, even if one is threatened with being killed himself, because his brother’s life that he is being forced to end is no less valuable than his own life. Likewise, public property is protected (by Islamic law). Regardless of it belonging to Muslims or non-Muslims, it isn’t permissible to transgress against it by destroying or burning it.

6 – In the Islamic shari’ah, protesting

is of the issues that revolve around weighing the pros and cons involved. The ruling on it changes with the change of time, place, and conditions wherein the benefits and harms vary. Considering the coexistence of benefits and harms involved in protesting, the matter is to be referred back to the people of sound reasoning and determination, namely the scholars.

Based on this, we view that what our brothers in Egypt took part in of protesting is their right in the eyes of the shari’ah, and it is an act that is warranted by international custom. This (permissibility) is because these were peaceful protests that demanded legitimate rights that were guaranteed by shari’ah. They exemplified the bravery and nobility of these youth and those that went out with them. Once again, we reiterate that the permissibility of their actions is contingent upon their protest remaining in a peaceful manner and also contingent upon the legitimacy of their demands.

7 – We don’t view the correctness of the opinion that the likes of these protests conflict with the ahadeeth forbidding to revolt against the ruler and commanding with patience towards them. The reason being is that these rulings are for a different case scenario, and because the prohibition to revolt against unjust rulers was legislated to prevent bloodshed and chaos, not to allow injustice or approve of the oppressor’s tyranny. Thus, wherever a method arises to deter injustice without resulting in a greater harm, it becomes a must to utilize it, for injustice is

appalling in all religions. Therefore, if the Muslims were to come together upon a permissible method of impeding the oppressor and stopping his injustice without that involving a weightier harm, and (considering) it is (also) included in their constitution, then the fundamental principle remains of establishing justice and stopping oppression.

8 – Peaceful protesting in and of itself isn’t considered revolting against the ruler when the constitution that this ruler was instated upon had legalized this method, deemed it permissible, formulated its practice, and considered it a permissible political technique. Hence, the evidences that forbid revolting against the ruler with the sword aren’t to be used against these peaceful demonstrations – contingent upon their abidance by recognizing the sanctity of blood, wealth, and their protection of private and public property.

9 - We don’t view the correctness of using the ahadeeth forbidding fighting between the Muslims and isolating oneself from tribulation to hinder these protests, for these youth did not come out bearing arms nor displaying aggression. Rather, arms were bore against them by a troop of immoral delinquents. Therefore, the case is completely different, and it is the protestors’ right to defend themselves against these assailant by whatever means necessary.

As for the ahadeeth regarding tribulations and the command to isolate oneself from them, this is when the truth is unclear to the Muslim. As for when the truth surfaces, it is incumbent that one commands the good and forbids the evil, and peaceful protest is of the ways to do that – with conditions – as was aforementioned.

10 – It is permissible for the Muslims residing in the West to organize peaceful protests in support of their brothers that are taking a stand in Egypt, and to support their demands so that they would be known in Western societies – on the condition that these protests are legally permitted and void of shari’ah violations.

11 – Empowerment through foreigners at the expense of Islamic or national interests in the likes of these conditions or otherwise is an Islamic crime and national betrayal. The enemies of the Muslims lurk in the shadows, awaiting these gaps to penetrate through them towards their plot against the Muslim nation and the sabotage of its children. Were they to enter amongst us, they would increase us in nothing but chaos, confusion, and dissension. And the lessons we take from

history and our present age – for whoever understands them – speak loud and clear with this reality. Thus, take extreme caution from enabling them to achieve their objectives.

12 – The current situation cannot sustain weakness and disunity to be provoked between the ranks of those exerting their all to attain reform, minimize the harms, and lessen the injustices via this unifi ed stand. After Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, nothing will determine success for this endeavor except agreeing upon a single aim; general welfare. For this reason, its is incumbent upon all the various reform movements, be they national or Islamic, to agree upon common terms that they can synchronize their efforts and collaborate with all their fellow countrymen on; of the freedom and respect they call for and the social justice and economic sufficiency that they all seek. Let their guiding principle be the words of the prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of Hudaybiyah: ‘By He in whose hands is my soul (Allaah), they will not demand of me any plan wherein Allaah’s sanctities are protected except that I will agree to it. ’ – and his words, peace and blessings be upon him, after the Treaty of Al-Fudool: ‘I had attended a treaty in the home of Abdullah ibn Jud’an that I would not exchange for (a lot of) red camels (i.e.

a treasure of wealth), and were I to be invited to it (again) in Islam, I would respond.’

13 – What the Muslim nation is going through of tribulations, and that which descends upon it of affl ictions, is but a recompense for some of its sins and a hastening for some of its crimes. Allaah, the Most High, said: [And no catastrophe befalls you except by what your hands have earned, and He pardons much.] Hence, no misfortune descends except for a sin, and isn’t repealed except by repentance. Thus, the fi rst thing the successful tend to when catastrophe strikes is rushing to repent to Allah, the Most High, admitting their weakness before Him, genuinely seeking refuge with Him and pleading between His hands. Allah, the Most High, said: [If only, when Our punishment came to them, they pleaded.] We therefore beseech all those who believe in Allaah and the Last Day to rush and repent to Allaah, the Glorifi ed, and beg Him in the pre-dawn hours and in the end of your prayers, to uplift the punishment from the Muslim lands, to relieve them of these tribulations, to not call them to account for what the foolish among them have done, to appoint over their affairs the best of them, to not appoint their affairs over to the worst of them, and to beautifully return them altogether to Him; leaders and followers, rulers and ruled.

14 – Likewise, we invite all the leaders of the Muslims, both scholars and rulers, to learn this valuable lesson and uphold their obligations towards it; by being sincere to themselves and their people from one angle, and by taking on their roles of being sincere to their neighbor, Egypt, whether towards its current leadership or the roaring masses from another angle. It isn’t reasonable that the eyes have seen statements being sent to Egypt from outside the lands of Islam yet they (the Muslim leaders) have no role in guiding or sincerely advising it – while we are brethren of the same religion and nation!

We ask Allaah, the Most High, to appoint over the Muslims the best of them and distance from them the worst of them, and that He provides their leaders with advisors that are righteous and sincere, and that He protects the lands and slaves from the evil of tribulations, the hidden of them and the apparent. We ask Him to forgive those that have died in these bloody events in Tunisia and Egypt, to relieve the injured, to console the wounded, to make a way out for the oppressed, and to bring about stability and comfort quickly to the beloved Egypt. And may Allaah send His peace and blessings upon His prophet, Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.

Chandler Endresen of Yorba Linda stood on Imperial Highway with about 30 others waving American flags. “I had seen what had gone on at UCI in 2010 when (Malik Ali) spoke. He caused trouble there. I don’t want that here.”

“This is not about hate. We are not hate mongers,” said Karen Lugo, one of the speakers outside the community center. Several people said they had sent out

thousands of e-mails about the ICNA Relief USA fundraiser and encouraged people to show up for a pro-America rally.

One organizer, Steven Amundson of Huntington Beach said, “A week and a half ago I would have been happy to have six people show up. It’s not right for terrorism to come to Yorba Linda. I always stress the need to be peaceful and positive.”

About 11 police officers were near the community center entrance, keeping an eye on the crowd, and at one point asked non-attendees to move back.

The fundraiser was not sponsored by the city. The city’s attorneys said the city cannot block the ICNA from using the building. The group has rented the community center many times, according to member Shahid Hussain.
