Welcome

Welcome to the Spring Concerts of the inaugural season of New York Chamber Choirs. We are delighted that you are here this evening to celebrate the music of Royal Composers; and in particular our special guest, Paul Mealor. New York Chamber Choirs is the only dedicated chamber choir organization in New York City, and our mission is at the heart of everything we do:

NYCC celebrates and promotes chamber choir music at the highest level through innovative concerts, education and outreach with adults and young people.

As a non-profit organization, a very important part of our mission is to offer music education, choral training and individual voice lessons at no cost to members. We run our programs year-long and currently have two ensembles; NYCC and NYCC Youth. Looking ahead, our intention is to develop additional ensembles as we continue to promote chamber choir music in New York City.

The chamber choir is a unique art form that bridges solo and large-choral singing. It requires intimate human connection, delicate musicality and technical proficiency. The result: captivating dimensions of color and complexity. Singers share a greater sense of responsibility and sensitivity, and achieve shared artistic goals with the conductor.

Enjoy the show this evening, join our mailing list, and please take time to meet our singers afterwards.

Alistair Hamilton Founder & Artistic Director

A Royal Program

Tonight’s concert celebrates over 500 years of music performed for and commissioned by the English Royal Family. This music has been performed many events, including weddings, funerals, and coronations. The program commemorates many centuries of tradition and premieres, honoring composers as diverse as King Henry VIII in 1513, the earliest composer represented, to Paul Mealor in 2011, the most contemporary. Between those ends of the time spectrum are the varied musical traditions represented by Purcell, Handel, Parry, Holst, Britten, and Tavener.

The music is both traditional and contemporary, as are the texts. In contrasting these styles, we aim to show the diversity of musical voice. For example, we lead the concert with plainchant, arguably the purest form of song. We then immediately feature the same “Ubi Caritas” text from the plainchant, this time sung through Mealor’s complex and driven harmonies, at times presenting nine vocal parts simultaneously. We enable the listener to travel through time with musical harmonies, styles and themes of each era, while staying rooted in time-honored texts.

We are delighted to present the works of such a dignified array of composers. We have been privileged to work personally with the only living composer represented tonight, Paul Mealor, with whom we have consulted throughout both planning and rehearsal stages and whose music has inspired us from start to finish. Through his music featured tonight, Mealor, who will be in attendance at our June 6 performance, has laid claim to his place among the great and historic Royal Composers represented on our program. The tradition continues.

A Spotless Rose

A Spotless Rose is growing,Sprung from a tender root,Of ancient seers’ foreshowing,Of Jesse promised fruit; Its fairest bud unfolds to lightAmid the cold, cold winter,And the dark midnight.

The Rose which I am singing,Whereof Isiah said,Is from its sweet root springingIn Mary, purest Maid;Through God’s great love and mightThe Blessed Babe she bare usIn a cold, cold winter’s night. Amen.

Time

Yes he is Time, Lusty and blithe,Time is at his apogee!Although you thought to seeA bearded ancient with a scythe.

No reaper he That cries “Take heed!”Time is at his apogee!Young and strong in his prime!Behold the sower of the seed!

Concord

Concord is here, our days to bless. And this our land, to endue With plenty, peace and happiness.

Concord and Time, each needeth each; The ripest fruit hangs where not one,But only two, can reach.

I Vow To Thee My Country

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago,Most dear to them that love her, Most great to them that know;We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

Coronation Ode: The Queen

True Queen of British homes and heartsOf guileless faith and sterling worth,We yield you ere today departs,The proudest, purest crown on earth!

We love you well for England’s sake,True you shall prove, as you have proved; The years that come shall only makeYour name more honoured, more belov’d.

Oh kind and wise, the humblest heartThat beats in all your realms todayKnows well that it can claim its partIn all you hope, in all you pray.

Pastime And Good Company

Pastime with good company, I love and shall until I die.Grudge who likes, but none deny, so God be pleased, thus live will I.For my pastance: hunt sing and dance, my heart is set,All goodly sport, for my comfort, who shall me let?

Youth must have some dalliance, of good or ill some pastance.Company methinks then best, all thoughts and fancies to digest. For Idleness is chief mistress, of vices all. Then who can say, but mirth and play, is best of all?

Company with honesty, is virtue - vices to flee.Company is good and ill, but every man has his free will. The best ensue, the worst eschew, my mind shall be.Virtue to use, vice to refuse, thus shall I use me!

The Lamb

Little Lamb, who made thee?Dost thou know who made thee?Gave thee life, and bid thee feedBy the stream and o’er the mead;

Gave thee clothing of delight,Softest clothing, woolly, bright;Gave thee such a tender voice,Making all the vales rejoice?

Little Lamb, who made thee?Dost thou know who made thee?Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee,Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee;

He is called by thy name,For he calls himself a Lamb.He is meek, and he is mild.He became a little child.

I, a child, and thou a lamb,We are called by his name.Little lamb, God bless thee!Little lamb, God bless thee!

God So Loved The World

For God so loved the world,That he gave his only son,That whosoever believes in himShall never dieBut have eternal life.

For God did not send his SonInto the world to condemn the world,But to save the world through him.

For God so loved the world,That he gave his only son,That whosoever believes in himShall never die.

Song for Athene

Alleluia May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.Remember me, O Lord, when you come into your kingdom.Give rest, O Lord, to your servant who has fallen asleep.

Alleluia The Choir of Saints have found the well-spring of life And door of paradise.Life: a shadow and a dream.Weeping at the grave creates the song: Alleluia.Come, enjoy rewards and crowns I have prepared for you.

Dido and Aeneas (excerpt)

Thy hand, Belinda, darkness shades me,On thy bosom let me rest,More I would, but Death invades me;Death is now a welcome guest.

When I am laid in Earth, May my wrongs createNo trouble in thy breast;Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.

With drooping wings you Cupids come, To scatter roses on her tomb. Soft and Gentle as her Heart Keep here your watch, and never part.

Jerusalem

And did those feet in ancient timeWalk upon England’s mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of GodOn England’s pleasant pastures seen? And did the Countenance DivineShine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded hereAmong these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold!Bring me my Arrows of desire!Bring me my Spear! O clouds unfold!Bring me my Chariot of fire!I will not cease from Mental Fight,Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand,Till we have built JerusalemIn England’s green & pleasant Land.
