One might wonder why these accomplished stars are willing to park their own bands to participate in a genuine collective. The answer becomes apparent when you hear these superb mu- sicians. The SFJAZZ Collective is the future of jazz—a constantly evolving, ever-relevant and quint- essentially modern art form. This band demands a lot from its members. Each year the Collective looks back and re- arranges famous compositions from past jazz masters, includ- ing Coltrane, Hancock, Coleman, Shorter, Monk and Tyner, and adds original compositions that have been informed by this rich history. In 2010, Horace Silver of the Jazz Messengers (founded, of course, with Art Blakey) is the fea- tured composer. His work with the Messengers and his classic Blue Note records of the 50’s and 60’s introduced Latin, gospel and funky soul into the harmonic sophistica- tion of bepop and redefined what jazz could be from that point on. Famous tunes like “Song For My Father,” “Sister Sadie,” “Doodlin’” and “Señor Blues” came from none other than Horace Silver. With members from Puerto Rico, Venezeula, New York, Philly, New Zealand and Israel, the Collective’s multi-cultural line up mirrors the jazz talent that is ex- ploding all over the world. These visionary musicians have multiple Grammy Awards, Guggenheim Fellowships and MacArthur ge- nius grants between them. Each musician is providing a crucial contribution to jazz innovation. And they all sought out and joined this band for the singular joy of feeding off colleagues who want to once again re-invent the genre and communicate jazz on a whole new plane. And they can swing.
