WELCOME

Few Pinelands residents realise that the suburb is the hunting ground of eagles, but each summer one of the world's smaller species migrates here. It's the Booted Eagle, and is just a little larger than a buzzard. It is however a fierce hunter, and doves are its main prey here. It can sometimes be seen devouring one in one of the scattered pine trees. The commonly seen pale form is easily recognisable by its ivory coloured plumage. Booted Eagles breed in Europe and our birds were once thought to originate from there. However, it has now been found that our population breeds in the Cape mountains in the summer and heads north into tropical Africa during our winter.

50 AND COUNTING…It feels like the 50th edition of the Muse came up very quickly and suddenly!

BY THE NUMBERS 50 Editions published, 50 frantic deadline dates, 379 000 copies in total, 1 228 individual pages, 93 Pinelanders interviewed and 2648 adverts prepared!

MANY, MANY AND BIG THANKS TO YOU.Although there are just the two us, Max and Glynnis, who put the magazine together, it would not be possible to keep putting it out regularly without the help and support of the Pinelands community, and our regular writers. We really appreciate the comment and appreciation we get from readers of the Muse. I have been stopped many times by 'strangers' in Howard Centre who take the time to let us know that they enjoy and look forward to each edition. Thank you for your encouragement.

We also rely on the regular flow of stories and suggestions for people to interview for the magazine. As we do not have a team of reporters we are grateful for our local citizen journalists who keep us in the know about what is happening in Pinelands.

We rely too on our "partners" who print and deliver the magazine for us. Our printers, RSA Litho reliably and professionally get the magazine to us every month with impossibly short lead times and the Post office "posties" are out whatever the weather to put it into your post boxes (meet our local postmen on page 3).

Very importantly, thank you to the many advertisers who keep us in business, both regular and occasional. We appreciate your support and trust that you get good value from it.

With this edition wrapped up and off to print, we are heading off for a much needed weekend break with our friends Pat & Ronald in Villiersdorp before we return to deliver your magazines hot off the press.

I hope you enjoy our celebration edition!

COMMUNITY NEWS

A TRIBUTE TO THE POSTMEN OF CAPE MAILThis month the Muse would like to pay tribute to the postmen from the Maitland and Goodwood Post Office depots who deliver the Muse magazine every month to the residents of Pinelands and Thornton. Cheerful and efficient, the postmen have coped well, even over the busy Christmas periods, and especially through the times when staff at other post offices were striking and "our" postmen were intimidated. Their day begins by sorting the letters that they are responsible for on their "walk" – an area in the suburb. They rotate through various walks so that they get to know the streets and where the post boxes are. Each postman cycles from the depot to the suburb with their mail delivery. The depot transport will deposit extra mail in "time boxes" within the suburb, where the postman can collect it and continue on his deliveries. A big thank you to all the post men who deliver the Muse magazine!

Well, the first quarter of the year has certainly been a busy one. The market has remained buoyant with property prices continuing their upward momentum. We have noticed a marked increase in the number of homes advertised above R4m, but need to caution against unrealistic expectations. Buyers are doing their homework, as are the banks when it comes to the granting of loans. We congratulate our sales team on an exceptional performance, carrying on where they left off last year. Not to forget our rental team of Mandy and Robyn, who concluded 9 new rentals ranging from R6 000 pm to R17 000 pm this year.

The dynamic team of Julie Meyer, Kathy Anderson, Pat Peat and Mandy Butler have returned from the Annual Seeff Western Cape Agent Awards held at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West, bringing home numerous achiever awards.

We are proud of our sales team, but we are even more proud of being able to serve the community of Pinelands. To serve our clients even better, we have shuffled the teams around and are proud to announce that Julie Meyer and Kathy Anderson have joined forces to take care of Pinelands, while Pat Peat will look after Thornton.

In one of the iconic real estate brands in South Africa, bringing home these awards against fierce competition is no mean feat.

Mandy Butler, our rentals specialist, was recognised for coming second regionally and fourth nationally for the number of units let, as well as for rental amounts achieved for her clients.

In a highly competitive environment, Mandy has once again proven that she is one of the best rental agents in the Western Cape. If you are looking for the consummate professional to look after your rental property, look no further than Mandy. She takes the pain out of rentals.

Kathy and Julie won a number of trophies for sales achieved and this is testimony to their hard work and dedication to their clients. Pat Peat also featured among the prize winners for the greatest number of bonds granted through Ooba, our mortgage origination partner.

Both Kathy and Julie were born and raised in Pinelands, going to school here and now continuing their lifelong association with Pinelands by teaming up to give our sellers and buyers the best possible advice and insight on what we believe is one of the best places to live in the Western Cape.

The month of March saw the Cape Argus Cycle Tour take place in the Peninsula. Sadly the length of the race was shortened as a consequence of the fires across the Peninsula. The race, which started with 525 entrants in 1978, has grown to be recognized internationally as the largest cycle race in the world by virtue of the numbers participating - approximately 40 000 cyclists. Incidentally, two other races in South Africa hold a similar honour for the same reason, namely, the Midmar Mile Swim and the Comrades Marathon. There are many stamps depicting cycling in its various forms from a simple means of transport, to pleasure to racing, but space only allows for a few of them to be shown here.

The Tour de France: The three major long-distance cycle races today are the Tour de France which started in 1903, the Gyro d’Italia (1909) and the Vuelta a Espaňa (1935).

The Penny-farthing: One of the intriguing early developments of the bicycle was the “Penny Farthing” with its large front wheel and its tiny rear wheel. The name derives from the relative size of the two English coins – the Penny and its quarter value, the Farthing, from Old English “fourthing”. Early bicycles were powered by fixed-wheel pedalling with the pedals being solid with the front axle. The Penny-Farthing evolved because it was found that the larger the wheel, the greater the distance covered by one revolution of the wheel and so, once moving, distances were covered in a shorter time. The advent of the free-wheel and the chain drive soon saw its demise.

The VelodromeVelodrome is the name given to a sports stadium specifically designed for high speed track cycle racing. Two parallel straights are joined at the ends of the arena by 180 degree turns which are banked to allow the cyclist to continue at speed round the bend, which at times can be in excess of 85 kilometres per hour. The cycles used are very light-weight, having a chain drive to a gearless fixed rear wheel and no brakes. Thus speed, deceleration and braking are all controlled by the rider by appropriate pressure on the pedals.

An amazing amount was collected at the RE/MAX Property Associates’ annual Toy and Book collection earlier this year. The joint effort between the Pinelands and Table View offices filled the office space once all the toys were laid out! The toys, books and clothes were divided into various age groups and donated to two orphanages in the Pinelands area – Linawo and Ukuthemba. It was a heart warming

The Cannons Creek annual Fun Run was on the evening of the hottest day that Cape Town had experienced in a century, 3 March 2015! Luckily it cooled down quickly as the evening wore on and there was plenty of water on hand for people to slake their thirst. The race that is open to all members of the Pinelands community and has participants walking or running 2, 4 and 8 kms; started and ended at the school. Participants who completed the race received medals and there were prizes for the winners in each category. There were also food stalls and a DJ kept people’s feet tapping with feel-good music.

TAKE BACK THE CANAL MOONLIGHT WALK ORGANISED BY PNW

Pictures and text by Pinelands resident Regine Lord.

At Clyde Pinelands sports field, a buzz of excitement awaited residents who had come out in large numbers to participate in our ‘Take back the Canal’ walk on Saturday 7 March 2015. Everyone was wrapped up in warm windbreakers on a clear but chilly night, and carrying torches, solar lamps or headlamps. Kids were running around, thrilled to be out so late. Eager dogs were barking and pulling on leads, or sitting calmly, waiting for the start. Shortly before we set off, Peter Anders (Pinelands Neighbourhood Watch) and John Berry (Pinelands Residents and Ratepayers Association) welcomed us to the event.

Walking briskly along the (more or less) well-lit path next to the Elsieskraal Canal, we walked all the way from Clyde Pinelands to the bridge at the Masonic Temple, before turning back the same way. Friendly law enforcement officials and PNW volunteers stopped car traffic on the various bridges and intersections. Faced with an oncoming tide of walkers, many people seemed to turn around before the end, probably keen to return to the refreshments waiting for those who returned to Clyde Pinelands, about an hour later! There was a wonderful vibe, with lots of smiling faces and light-hearted banter between the walkers.

What a great turnout we had for our moonlight walk on 7 March! A huge THANK YOU to all PNW members, Pinelands residents and friends, and the support services of SAPS, Law Enforcement, Metro and Pinewatch for making our 'Take Back Our Canal' walk such a tremendous success! With 198 adults, 24 children and 15 dogs, we had a fantastic evening! Here's looking forward to the next one!

PRRA MEETINGThe PRRA meeting was held on 18 March in the Pinelands Library Hall. An interesting talk presented by Sheryl Ozinsky on the OZCF was followed by some Pinelands issues that are summarised in Brian Watkyns Community News Focus number 139. At last the section 21 Company for the Pinelands Street Camera Project has been registered. For those residents who wish to contribute to this important safety feature in Pinelands, please see the banking details

on the community calendar page 2.Brian Watkyns in collaboration with the PRRA, the Traffic Department and the City Roads Engineers is investigating solutions to the dangerous intersection between Forest Drive and Forest Place.A new contractor is to be sourced to clean along the canal. The removal of an iconic tree outside PNPS was done as a safety measure and council will now replace the tree with Outeniqua Yellowoods and park benches. If you would like to read the full version

of Brian Watkyns Community News Focus Number 139, see www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za. Other issues addressed were traffic problems in Glen Roy; a dog park where dogs could run free; maintenance of the canal bridges which are rusting; and the renovation of the Howard Bowling Club into a training centre for sports and recreation staff. One green will be made available for an urban garden. A reminder was given to all residents that water restrictions are still in place. Garden watering may not be done between 10am and 4pm.

PNW – THANK YOU

Measles vaccineRecently there was an outbreak of Measles in South Africa and a separate outbreak at Disney World in California. Measles is not the innocuous childhood illness that many have come to think it is – it kills. Since the introduction of the Measles vaccination there are 200 million less cases of measles worldwide per year. This has highlighted for many the importance of vaccinations as Medicine’s greatest weapon. The link between vaccinations and autism has been firmly disproved.Using Vaccines effectivelySmallpox has been eradicated by vaccines. Prior to this, it had killed over 300 million people. It is often forgotten that in 1918 the Spanish Flu killed over 100 million people. We are due for another pandemic like that again. It is Flu Vaccine time again!Important VaccinesThe two vaccines that I would like to highlight are: the vaccine for HPV (Human

Papilloma Virus) – the virus that causes Cervical Cancer, and the vaccine for Shingles. HPV vaccineCertain serotypes of HPV are responsible for cervical cancer. This cancer is the most common cancer in woman in South Africa. This is the reason that woman need to have regular screening pap smears. There is now a simple vaccine that prevents this cancer. It should be given to all young girls between the ages of 9 and 13 years, but can be given up to 26 years. It can also be given to boys.

MEDICINE’S GREATEST WEAPON – VACCINESBy Dr Mark Stodel of Community Medical Care.

Shingles vaccineShingles is a debilitating illness that affects the immune-compromised and the elderly. It can cause a painful chronic condition called Post Herpetic Neuralgia. There is now a vaccine that reduces the incidence and severity of shingles. It is advisable for individuals from the age of 50 to 79 years; however the efficacy deteriorates as one ages. It is also advisable for some individuals before chemo or radiotherapy or long term immunosuppressive drugs, such as those used in rheumatoid arthritis.

The health of your mouth is an integral part of your overall health. Bacteria can travel from the mouth and into

the bloodstream attacking heart tissue, hip and knee replacements. Diabetics are also at risk. As the mouth is the beginning of the digestive system it stands to reason that we must look after it.Healthy meals: A balanced diet is a good start. Proper nutrition helps your immune system to fight infection. Eat food with antioxidant properties, such as Vitamin E from vegetable oils, nuts, green leafy vegetables; and Vitamin C from citrus fruits, broccoli and potatoes.Risks caused by smoking: Smoking causes gum disease , heart disease, mouth cancers and lung problems. Sugar: It feeds the bacteria that attack your teeth, gums and supporting bone. We must eliminate the frequency with which we consume obvious sugars such as those found in sweets, cakes, fizzy drinks and energy drinks. Dilute fruit juices, and opt for unsweetened juices. Sweets are allowed once or twice a week, but should be consumed in one sitting and not frequently throughout the day. Rinse mouth with water afterwards. Secondly, we need to clean the mouth thoroughly, daily, to prevent plaque build up.Start with your baby: Do not take a bottle of milk or juice to bed. Feed the baby and take the bottle away, night and day. Wipe the childs front teeth with a cloth at bath time. Use a very soft brush as soon as the child will co-operate. Try not to hurt or fight. Soft finger brushes with rubber bristles are available. Visit the dentist from age two, twice a year to detect problems early.Help your child to brush every night up to age six – as they do not have the fine hand

co–ordination needed to do it properly and systematically. Even an electric toothbrush is difficult to use at this age.Parents make a mistake to think that "baby" teeth will fall out, but that only happens at age 10 – 12. Do your child a favour and keep them healthy. This way the child’s visits to the dentist will be routine without the fright of having fillings. Avoid snacks. Don't take hot chocolate and biscuits to bed!Even good teeth need cleaning:People with "good" teeth often think it unnecessary to visit the dentist. They often present with genetic gum disease. Tartare builds up under the gum which leads to a breeding ground for bacteria, which in turn attack the bone surrounding the teeth and bone loss. Bacteria also enter the bloodstream. Brushing alone will not reverse the process. Flossing and mouthwash is essential and professional cleaning by the dentist.Be aware as you age:Older people collect food between the teeth and this needs to be removed by interdental brushes and an aqueous flosser. Constant food impaction is a warning signal. Consult your dentist. Older people must watch hard food such as almonds, biltong, toffees, and peppermints as teeth get brittle with age. Teeth with root canals and fillings are at risk of infection.Losing enamel by grinding your teeth:If you grind your teeth, consult your dentist, as your enamel will wear down rapidly and you will damage your temporo mandibular joint, which connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. The movement of this joint is used to talk, chew and yawn.By Dr Elrie De Villiers

Before you go: Six weeks before you leave on your holiday take a visit to your doctor or Travel Clinic and have the recommended vaccines for the area, as well as the compulsory ones, eg Yellow Fever which only becomes valid 10 days after being injected – so don’t leave it too late. Prophylactic malaria and antibiotics should be taken with you if appropriate for the destination. Check your Travel Insurance before departure – especially the fine print!During your flight: Long–haul flights can result in deep vein thromboses (blood clots) in the calf. Drink water, move around, stretch your legs, avoid alcohol and avoid sleeping tablets. Wear Inflight stockings if you are moderate or high risk. Your risk increases if you had surgery within the last two months, if you are on the oral contraceptive pill, if you had a previous clot, have a family member who had a clot, or if you are pregnant. Asprin has not been shown to prevent blood clots in the veins. Time zones – immediately set the new destination time on your watch to correct your sleep pattern as quickly as possible.Locobiotal spray in the nose and mouth during a long flight can protect against

viruses and bacteria on the plane. There is nothing worse than getting a fever two days into your holiday!Once on holiday: It is vitally important to be careful about what you eat and drink when away from home. Indigenous water supplies may be poorly sanitised, leading to water-borne diseases. Use bottled water to brush your teeth and don't have ice.In countries where sanitation and hygiene are poor avoid: shellfish, raw vegetables, unpeeled fruit – like apples or peaches, bananas are fine if you peel it yourself, salads, food on street stalls and tap water. Hand sanitisers or Dettol wipes used before meals are very useful in preventing diarrhoea. If you do get diarrhoea whilst away it is critical to keep your fluid levels up and prevent dehydration.Be aware in foreign countries – fatigue and excessive alcohol consumption cause accidents, especially when we forget which side of the road cars drive. Enjoy your next trip. Keep your travel insurance and emergency phone numbers on hand and trust that you wont be needing them! By Dr Louise Wigens.

Can we stop, control, or even undo some of the damage we find in aging skin? Well we can't stop the natural aging process altogether, but we can slow it down and improve skin appearance by following recommended lifestyle changes.Overexposure to the sun. It is never too late to start protecting your skin and undoing some of the damage. Wear a good quality sunscreen every single day, rain or shine – and wear your sunglasses!Avoid sunbeds: Treat yourself to a Spraytan or use a self-tanning product, rather than exposing your skin to the harmful UV rays emitted by a sunbed. Prescription glasses: Over time, repetitive facial expressions cause lines on the face, so wear your prescription glasses to reduce frowning and squinting.Smoking: Aestheticians can spot a smoker's skin right away! Smoking causes wrinkles, a dull, sallow looking complexion and it robs your body of vital nutrients. Alcohol: Drink two glasses of water for every alcoholic drink to compensate for the dehydration which speeds up skin aging. Diet: Moisture levels drop drastically in your 50's. Healthy fats from raw almonds,

salmon, avocado pear and olive oil will keep your skin supple and moist. Cut back on sugar and refined carbohydrates. Eat foods such as bright fruit and vegetables, that are rich in vitamins and antioxidants.Exercise: A daily 30 minute walk, will not only improve your overall health, but increase circulation, which is fabulous for a younger looking skin. So hop up off that couch and walk the dog!Hormone changes. Visible hormonal changes occur in our 50's. Visit your aesthetician for more results–driven treatments now that the kids are starting to leave home.Skincare: Stay away from anything that may scrub or sting, to prevent scarring and hyperpigmentation. Toners play an important part in sloughing off dead skin cells. Serums and anti-aging products can improve elasticity. Use a good quality moisturiser with vitamin A. Speak to your aesthetician; don’t just grab something off the shelf. Schedule a skin analysis to determine your exact needs. You can still achieve a glowing younger looking skin by starting today!By Cheryl Smulders of Sublime Skin and Body.

Sport participation amongst our children is on the increase along with

opportunities to take part in competitive environments at a younger age.I have overheard many parents and coaches debate the emotional readiness of a specific child to participate in more competitive environments. But, is anyone asking about their “physical” readiness? I am not referring to whether they can hit or kick a ball well, as there is certainly no lack of sport specific coaching out there. But rather whether their body is able to withstand the physical demands of a more competitive environment? We live in a world where our children “play” a lot less than we did. They have experienced less climbing trees, walls, doing handstands and playing catch me if you can. And with it they have lost the many benefits that these activities provide: strength, stability, balance, speed, agility. Then, we introduce sport…and lots of it!

So, should your child lift weights? My personal opinion (supported by much evidence) is that they should! But, perhaps I should clarify what I mean by “weights”. I simply mean that they should be doing some form of resistance training to develop better strength and power. I know what you are thinking: “I heard that resistance training can stunt their growth?” I can reassure you that there is no evidence to support that myth. It is important, however, that the coach teaching these activities has a sound knowledge of paediatric exercise science. In fact, our children should be doing FUN activities that develop not only strength and power, but also speed, agility, balance, co-ordination and stability. Children can be helped to perform all sorts of fun games and activities using their body weight, medicine balls, resistance bands, climbing walls and many other forms of equipment to improve their body’s ability to thrive in the “competitive sporting environment”.I refer to this type of training as INT (Integrative Neuromuscular Training) and it is an essential aspect of your child’s sporting development.

MONEY MATTERS

By Sue Torr Director at Crue Consulting

8 FINANCIAL GIFTS TO GIVE YOUR CHILDRENIt is surprising how many material gifts we give our children when there exists a multitude of gifts we can bestow upon them that are both free and priceless. Here are eight financial gifts you may want to consider gifting to your kids:

DON’T LET THEM MAKE MONEY THEIR GODMost of us parents encourage our children in a particular faith or religion. As personal as one’s faith is, let’s endeavour not to teach our children to worship in the temple of money. For there, though they might encounter many fellow–worshippers, their prayers will go unanswered and their souls will be rudderless. Our children must know that the existence of money is transient and ephemeral and that making money their god will lead to disappointment, heartache and confusion.

THEY MUST BECUSTODIANS OF THEIR OWN WEALTHOur children should understand that money is an inanimate object and holds no power. As guardians of our wealth, we hold the power to use our money to perpetrate evil or to do abundant good. Let’s teach our children how to harness the potential of money to uplift and heal our world.

OUR EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING SHOULD NOT BE ATTACHED TO OUR FINANCIAL SUCCESSES OR FAILURESAs humans, it is natural for our moods to ebb and flow according to our circumstances. Let’s make sure that the touchstone for our mood changes is not money. If we show that the lack of money can make us sad, anguished and depressed, we are teaching our children that the existence of money can make us happy, satisfied and fulfilled. Let them know that happiness is a choice and is unrelated to wealth.

LET THEM BE THE AUTHORSOF THEIR OWN FINANCIAL STORIESWhatever plans we may have for our children’s futures, we need to step back and let them be the authors of their own stories, making their own financial mistakes, and whilst we’ll always be there to guide and mentor them, it is not fair for us to jeopardise our own retirement funding to fix their financial fiascos.

ALLOW THEM TO FOLLOW THEIR PASSIONSOur children need to be allowed to find their passion – the very thing that they love doing more than anything else – and then build a career out of it. When you spend your God-given skill and natural genius doing what you genuinely love doing, your inexhaustible energy will be contagious, and making money will be a by-product of living your dream.

YOUR LEGACY NEED NOT INCLUDE MONEYLet's give careful thought to the burning desire to bequeath a financial legacy to our children. For many so-called ‘trust-fund babies’, their intended inheritance hangs like a sword of Damocles over their heads – a reminder of parental expectations.

THEY WERE BORN TO WORKEach and every one of us was born with a unique set of skills and talents, to use for the greater good of mankind. Our children’s self-worth is intricately wrapped up in their ability to contribute to society in a positive and meaningful way. Let them feed their self-worth.

TEACH THEM TO GIVEIn a world dominated by wants, needs and have-to-haves, teaching our children to give freely to others less fortunate than ourselves can be challenging. There is undoubtedly more joy to be derived from the act of giving than from the state of receiving – a difficult lesson to communicate in a world obsessed with the acquisition of personal wealth. As Anne Frank wrote, “No one has ever become poor from giving”, and we shouldn’t be afraid to let our children find this out for themselves.

PINELANDER

There was a time in my life when his question would’ve left me blushing,

embarrassed and ashamed. But not today... I smiled at my inquisitor. I looked in his naively curious eyes and said, “I was born this way. That’s how God made it.”Nine-year old Aphiwe had asked, “Why is your nose so big?” As a teenager I had heard that your nose and your ear lobes never stop growing! In high school my insecurities plagued me, sabotaged my self-concept and undermined my self-worth. “What are people looking at it? Is my hair okay? Are my arms too skinny? I wish that I could be like the cool kids… just four five seconds.” Add to that my fear of dancing in public, and I lived with deep insecurity but putting on a brave face. I was jealous of those who looked like they had it together. And if I’m honest, there are even times today when I still feel like that. I know I’m not the only one. I bet my life. [Eight and counting… your score so far?]

As children, teenagers and adults we encounter these insecurities in ourselves and in the people we meet at school, at varsity, at work, in MacDonald’s, in shopping centres, in parking lots. People around us are hurting. We even see it reflected in our books and movies. Whether it’s Harry, Percy, Thomas, Triss, or Katniss, the characters in teen fiction (and the movies based on the books – the books are better… just thinking out loud) are grappling with their identity, looks, talents, trying to find their place in this world while resisting an oppressive social system. So, what can we do about it?Firstly, recognise that the heart wants what it wants. And it wants love, peace, and security. It craves these things (as well as a little exercise… though the endorphins go to your brain).Secondly, let’s deal with our own insecurities, because hurting people hurt people.

This article by Hein Joubert is jam packed with references to songs, books and movies (mostly current). See how many you can spot - out of 32!For the chance to win a mystery prize send your answers to:[email protected].

Hein Joubert is passionate about creating an environment where young people can become all that they were made to be. Home grown, he left Pinelands in 2001 and ‘grew up’ for real while working with Scripture Union and teaching at Simons Town School. He married his high school sweetheart and together they have two awesome children. He currently teaches at Cannons Creek, lives in Thornton, plays hockey in Langa and is part of a congregation in Gugulethu.

Listen while iTune you

“But how?” you ask. Develop a couple of good habits, like regularly reminding yourself of what makes you beautiful? If you’re not sure, then ask the ones who love you most. Say a Prayer (in C) and ask your Creator to show you the beauty placed inside of you. Exercise. Don’t accept mean hurtful messages from others: If someone dumps their pain on you, shake it off and love ‘me’ harder. You don’t have to try so hard to fit in or to please others.Thirdly, remember that you are dangerous when your lips are moving. Be heroes who compliment and build others up with the words. Send positive waves by smiling at people. If you haven’t got anything positive to say, shut up and dance.Which brings me back to dancing one last time for the final point: Roar at fears. By facing your fears you strip them of their power over your heart. So this month I’ll be on the dance floor getting down to uptown funk and reminding myself that there is no place I’d rather be.

PRINCIPAL'S ARTICLE

With more than 90% of parents in the modern world admitting to spanking or some kind of physical punishment of their children; we can define this parenting as punitive. Whether it is a spanking, time out or removal of privileges or even time confined to their room the result is not always one that we would like.

DEFIANCE AND VERBAL ABUSEChildren then become defiant and start back chatting and this can lead to verbal abuse of the parents. Verbal abuse is considered any statement that insults or hurts a parent and some examples can be “You are so mean!” or “I wish I did not have parents like you!”. Defiance is any statement which usually starts off with the word “No!” in response to a parent’s request. Rudeness is anything from the rolling of the eyes, deep sighs and stomping of the feet from young children. The child may even threaten the parent by stating that if they do not get what they demand, there will be repercussions for the parent – they will do what they wish to do anyway.

GENTLE PARENTINGWe need to change our parenting approach and carry out what one can calls gentle parenting. What does that mean? It means that we listen to see what is behind the behaviour and reconnect with our children at the point of need. We would need to

initiate a two-way communication about the problem and brain-storm about how to address the issue in ways that the child gets the best deal as well as the parent. One would then be assisting through guidance and at the same time, equipping the child with better ways to express their needs in the future.

CONNECTION AND COMMUNICATIONThe gentle approach would then focus on the child having a problem and the attempts made by the parent with the child helping them solve their problem through connection, communication and inviting co-operation between the two parties.

CHILDREN MIMIC OUR BEHAVIOURParents need to hold themselves to the same standards as they expect from their children. The old adage “I am the parent and you will do as I say!” no longer applies in the modern day world. We cannot tell our children not to drink alcohol when we as parents spend our weekend over- imbibing. Children are no longer accepting the ‘Do what I say and not what I do” approach which may have worked before; although I doubt it as I always talk about the silent teaching where the children become us and their behaviours mirror ours.

HIGH EMOTIONS CALL FOR INCREASED SELF CONTROLWhen children backchat, it gives us a sign

THE GENTLE APPROACH TO CHILD DISCIPLINE

By Carol Booth

Principal of Cannons CreekIndependent School

that there is indeed a huge tussle internally with which they are trying to deal, and it is all about what to do with their emotions. It is at this point where parents need to model their own self-control and self-regulation by controlling their response to the outburst. Instead of counter attacking, one needs to slow down, take a good breath, as at this stage both parties’ emotions have also reached a high level.

CAREFUL LISTENING CAN LEAD TO A PEACEFUL SOLUTIONThe parent needs to listen to their child; to their words of fear, hurt or even anger. One needs to collaborate with them as partners and make that connection with them to bring an effective and peaceful solution not only to the problem at hand but to the inner turmoil that started the outburst in the first place.

RESPECT NOW AND GREAT REWARD TO FOLLOWParenting is not easy and none of us are perfect but we can all create an atmosphere of respect in the home which starts with the parents modelling respect by the tone of their voice and by their reactions to these very stressful situations. It is not easy. One needs to work at being understanding, always available and responsive to the child’s needs, but the reward in years to come will be amazing.

TRAVELLERS

Who, in their right mind, you ask, would willingly drive 1 060kms from

Pinelands to spend 5 days in 40o C to be in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park? Well, we know the allure of this park, with its black-maned lions, great cheetah sightings, elusive leopards and profuse bird life, including very impressive raptors. At 2am on the 26 December 2014, five of us set off from Pinelands, and 11 hours later, before we had even entered the park, we already had our first raptor sighting - a Juvenile Martial Eagle. After entering at the Twee Rivieren Gate, we drove North to Nossob camp where we spent the next two nights in a chalet with only a fan to keep us cool. Unfortunately, the camp shut off the power at 10pm and after that it was an all night battle between heat, man and flying ants. Each morning, when the gate opened, we were ready to go in search of the animals and birds that attract us to this park. The Gemsbok and Wildebeest were plentiful and so were the Springbok - who do not run when they see a lion, but stand alert and watch him walk past until they know that they are out of danger. With five birders in the vehicle many abrupt stops were made, especially when one of us spotted a bird of prey. The Giant Eagle Owl and the Juvenile Pale Chanting Goshawk were happy to ‘model’ for photographs. After two nights at Nossob, having spent each evening in a hide overlooking a waterhole where the animals came to

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

drink, we slowly made our way back to Twee Rivieren via Mata Mata camp. The next three days were filled with sightings making the dryness and heat of the desert worthwhile. The first highlight was a pride of magnificent cheetah romping on the road next to our vehicle. The second highlight was following a male lion while on a night ride. If it wasn’t for the sound of clicking cameras on the vehicle, one would hear the lion lapping the water in the quiet of the night with only the sounds of the bush around him.Even for non-birders the sight of a Crimson Breasted Shrike is breathtaking. In the early morning and late afternoon the Black Backed Jackals would come out to drink - as did the Bat-eared Fox and the African Wildcat, who we were very fortunate to see on the night ride.As the sun set on our final evening in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, we knew another adventure had come to an end. However, the peacefulness and tranquillity of the bush and inhabitants draws us back time and time again.

Photos and story by Linda Sumner

The Kgalakadi Transfontier Park is an amalgamation of the South African Kalahari Gemsbok Park and the Botswana Gemsbok National Park. It covers 3.7 million hectare and is malaria free. 4 x 4 transport is required in this appropriately named wildlife park - Kgalakadi means place of thirst. It is located mainly in the southern Kalahari Desert, with red sand dunes and sparse vegetation.

LEOPARDS LEAP WINE ESTATE

We were drawn to Leopards Leap Wine Estate in Franschoek by their rotisserie lunch where you can choose between chicken, pork belly, beef fillet or lamb neck. Prices range from R45 for the chicken to R125 for the fillet. Then choose from an array of colourful tasty salads (these are weighed - and this was worrisome, but in the end the cost was reasonable). There is plenty of choice for those with a sweet tooth. Happily, the wine prices at the lunch table were not loaded.

The verandah is huge and cool with lunch tables in amongst couches with soft cushions, so that one can relax and admire the vineyards with the mountains beyond, or watch the children play on the lawns (possibly putting their feet into the water fountains).

As well as the wine tasting, Leopards Leap offers a three course food and wine pairing for R120. The kitchens are glass fronted and equipped in the style of master chef with individual stations - just perfect for the cooking lessons offered by Leopards Leap.

Service was good and friendly - the food delicious - a very enjoyable afternoon.Book at [email protected] lunches served Wednesdays to Saturdays 11:30 – 15:00, and Sundays 11:30 – 15:00. Call 021 876 8002.

1,5 kg leg of lamb, deboned and excess fat removed5 large cloves of garlic, cut in strips6 sprigs of rosemary, stripped from the stalks6 black olives, pitted and cut in stripsjuice and finely grated rind of 1 lemonavocado or olive oilsalt and ground black pepper to taste

1. Butterfly the leg into a more or less even layer. If necessary, carefully make one or two slits to flatten out any thicker sections.

2. Make small slits with the point of a sharp vegetable knife all over the leg of lamb, about 3 cm apart. Push a piece of garlic, a few pieces of rosemary and an olive strip into each slit.

3. Mix the lemon juice and rind with the oil and any remaining garlic, rosemary and olives and spread evenly over the meat. Refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight. (Don’t season with salt and pepper yet).

4. Prepare a kettlebraai with about 30 briquettes in each coal holder. Start roasting the meat when a thin layer of ash forms on the briquettes.

5. Season the leg of lamb with salt and pepper. Place flat on the grid, but over indirect heat (not directly above coals). Cover with the lid and keep both ventilation holes open.

6. Roast for 45 minutes - 1 hour for medium (or until cooked to your preference, but preferably still a little pink on the inside). (Or oven-roast at 180 °C for the same time, covering it with foil for the first 30 minutes.)

7. Allow the meat to rest for 10 minutes before carving it – this retains more of the meat juices. Serve hot or at room temperature with the side dishes and accompaniments of your choice.

FOOD FROM THE HEART

Celebration

Recipe from Food from the heart/OnthoukosServes 4–6

The month of April can be considered a milestone in more than one way. The first quarter of the year is over, the season has definitely changed, it includes Easter weekend and the rest of the month has more long weekends to look forward to (okay, strictly speaking the last one is on the 1st of May...). This is also the 50th Muse issue – all the more reason to celebrate. Whether you’re celebrating a good life in general, the new season or just enjoying a day with family and friends, be sure to do it with good food. For many of us a leg of lamb or mutton is synonymous with a celebration and lots of fabulous food memories. That said, everyone has their favourite way to prepare it and a preference as to how well ‘cooked’ it should be. Some like it best when the meat falls off the bone. Others prefer it slightly pink on the inside and others only

believe in their combination of seasonings. We love to roast a leg of lamb on the kettle braai, as the end result is juicy with a smoky flavour. For seasoning, few things beat the flavour of lemon, rosemary or other herbs like thyme and a touch of garlic. Or have you tried Moroccan flavours or wholegrain mustard, rosemary and a bit of orange marmalade? There are many options, as long as it complements the meat, without overpowering it.If you have any left-over lamb, you can make it go further in more than one delicious way. Does a sandwich with horseradish, lettuce, tomato, gherkins and slices of lamb tickle your taste buds? Or how about shredded meat with fresh mint added to yoghurt, tomato slices, basil leaves and cucumber in a wrap?

Have a festive family feast.
