Cultural competence Cultural competence Cultural competence Cultural competence is a set of behaviors and attitudes that come together in December’s monthly Asset # 34. The word cultureculturecultureculture is used because it implies the integrated pattern of human behavior that includes thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values and institutions of a racial, ethnic, religious or social group. Valuing diversity 2. Having the capacity for cultural self-assessment 3. Being conscious of the dynamics when cultures interact 4. Having an understanding of culture knowledge 5. Having developed an understanding of cultural diversity

The Search Institute suggests the following tips for raising culturally competent children in today’s diverse world. ♦ Pay attention to what you say and how you say it about people, the world, ideas, and so on. Your kids are

learning from you. ♦ Teach your own kids that everybody has personal values, even though others’ may be different from their

own. The holidays are the perfect time of year to discover different cultural events and festivals in the re-gion. If you don’t know of any, contact your local Chamber of Commerce or library.

♦ When you watch television, see a movie, or play a video game with your children, talk about the subtle messages about diversity. Do all the characters look, sound, or dress a certain way? Are there stereotypes that are reinforced or dispelled? What’s implied by the positive and negative aspects of certain characteristics?

♦ Encourage your children to have multi-cultural experiences by attending different religious services, discovering restaurants with food from different countries and visiting museums. These are all an educational opportunity to see and learn about the world we live in.

Maria epitomizes the ideals of a responsible student as she is consistently prepared for class and is accountable to herself for her learning. After working on assignments at home Maria will seek out help in the morning before school to have her questions answered completely until she understands. When she is absent she will access the needed materials online, review them independently, complete her work and show up early before school to make up any work that was missed from the previ-ous day. Maria will work into homeroom and/or lunchtime to complete her work. Maria was nominated by her Algebra teacher.

Cathy is a young lady who focuses on her talents as well as energy into fulfilling any obligation she assumes. With exceptional workmanship and pride, Cathy takes upon herself not only the responsibilities of her schoolwork but voluntarily creates study guides and games to assist her peers. Her own classmates have acknowledged how grateful they are for her sharing this work. Cathy’s commitment to her work, herself, her classmates, and her school reflect an unselfishness that does not necessarily accompany the concept of responsibility. Cathy was nominated by her teachers and peers because she is so giving of herself to the Unami community.

Eryn has always been a responsible kid. She has always been good at telling her parents when she went over the “screen time” limit. She has never tried to push blame for something she had done that might not have been the best choice off onto her sister, or somebody else. Eryn is a good role model for those around her with the asset of responsibility. Last year, Eryn was asked by a teacher to sit with a certain student on the bus because the young student started off the school year being afraid. Eryn sat with the child almost everyday for the entire year. Eryn defines someone who is responsible; she went above and beyond what she had to do and made her parents very proud.

The celebration of song will be led by Temple Judea’s Rabbi Mitchell Delcau and the TJ Band. This family friendly event will be at the corner of State and Hamilton Streets. Look for the BIG dreidel!

Did you know a dreidel is marked with four Hebrew letters: Nun, Gimel, Hei and Shin. These letters stand for the Hebrew phrase "Nes Gadol Hayah Sham", a great miracle

happened there, referring to the miracle of the oil.

The letters also stand for the Yiddish words nit (nothing), gantz (all), halb (half) and shtell (put), which are the rules of the game! There are some variations in the way people play the game, usually everyone puts in one coin. A person spins the dreidel. If it lands on

Nun, nothing happens; on Gimel ("gimme!"), you get the whole pot; on Hei, you get half of the pot; and on Shin, you put one in. When the pot is empty, everybody puts one in. Keep playing until one person has everything. Then redivide it, because nobody likes a poor winner. Happy Hanukkah!
