THE JORDAN VALLEY

The Jordan Valley is part of the Syrian-African Rift – the most conspicuous geological structure in the Middle East. The rift's southern tip is located in Mozambique, in East Africa, while its northern tip lies in the snow-covered Taurus Mountains in Turkey. It was the interior of this rift that served as the primeval habitat for Homo sapiens. For several million years, the eastern side of the Syrian-African Rift has been moving north in relation to its western side. During different periods in the relatively recent past, the Jordan Valley was covered with lakes that were fed by streams flowing intoit from both east and west. The sediment that sunk into these lakes has created uniform geological strata across the entire valley. The rift separating the Gilad Mountains and the Galilee Mountains is mended in the valley. The mountains, by contrast, do not at all resemble one another. The relative movement between the two sides of the rift has shifted the Gilad Mountains to their present place; the viewer standing at the summit of the Galilee Mountains is thus looking across at mountains whose geological makeup is similar to that of the mountains located approximately 100 kilometers further south. The valley is a connecting element, while the mountain is a separating element. The slopes between the Sea of Galilee and Beit She'an are mostly composed of soft, young rocks. Today, the Jordan River flowsfrom the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea through the Jordan Valley; it serves as a watershed for all the streams and landscape units that surround it both to the east and to the west. The Jordan (the river that the Children of Israel crossed on their way to the Promised Land, and where Jesus met John the Baptist) is more than a river. It has become a deeply meaningful myth in human history.

WATER SOURCES

The water sources in this region of the world are directly related to its geological structure; to a large degree, they have been shaped by the same shifts that created the mountain and the valley. The springs in the Harod Valley flow along the same shifts thatcaused the uplift of the Tabor and of Ramat Kochav. The springs in the Jordan Valley erupt along the numerous fault lines of the Syrian-African Rift. Water sources have always been a point of attraction for human settlements, for animals and for migratory birds; they tie together geology, prehistory and history.

Wars and conflicts have always unfolded because ofthem and around them – as have love stories and astounding encounters; they are an inextricable part of the story of this region.

THE GILBOA AND THE TABOR

The Gilboa and the Tabor are like two brothers whose creation dates back to the same period, yet whose life histories have shaped them in different ways. The rocks that make up both mountains are about 100 million years old. Mt. Tabor is composed of softer rocks than Mt. Gilboa. It is surrounded on all sides by shifts that have elevated it high above the environment and its moderate slopes and rounded forms are due to the softness of. It radiates a kind of gentle authority, and the valleys surrounding it seem to be bowing their heads in submission. The Gilboa, by contrast, is composed of harder rocks. In addition, its uplift occurred more recently and more quickly, and took place only on its northern side. This is the reason for the cliffs facing in the direction of Ein Harod, and for the more rigid appearance of this side of the mountain. Moreover, there is no separation between it and the mountains of Eastern Samaria to its south. The Gilboa rises up above the flat Valley ofJezreel (which similarly has a history of movement along shifts); the mountain and the valley thus appear like inverted mirror images of one another. The mountain is shaded, and the shadow it throws across the valley (during much of the day) lends it a weighty and somewhat threatening appearance.

WADI TABOR

Wadi Tabor connects Mt. Tabor and the Jordan Valley. The run-off from the mountain is carried through the wadi to the watershed in the valley, so that the same rocks that originally covered the mountain fill the valley at the end of this process. The flow of water throughthe wadi is shaped by the different types of rock at it bottom. In the vicinity of Mt. Tabor, the water flows over marlstone and clay rocks, and the stream is wide and slow. Near TelRechesh (which is identified as the Canaanite and ancient Israeli city Ancharat), the streamruns over hard basalt rocks and the wadi is suddenly transformed into a winding, cliff-filled,impressive canyon. The canyon ends at the point where the stream once again starts to flowover soft marlstone rocks. From this point until it reaches the Jordan Valley, the wadi's slopes once again become less steep.
