“Baptize all nations in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” On Pentecost you may have heard the reading from Paul to the Galatians. This letter, which a minority of scholars believe is Paul’s earliest, is one of my favorites. The theme of chapter 5 is the ten-sion between the natural tendency to live lives of the flesh and the supernatural gift of living a life in the Spirit. It contains one of the essential tools for making choices in how to live as Christians: the Fruits of the Spirit.

These fruits are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gen-erosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Behaviors and choices which maximize these for ourselves is my path to holiness. Please note that as each of us are unique and therefore different although the behaviors will have characteristics of the Spirit’s fruit, the daily choices and long term commitments will vary based on gifts, current situations and our own vocation as single, married, religious, ordained (priest, deacon) or widow (which I believe includes being a single parent).

It is beautiful when someone’s life is bearing the Fruits of the Spirit… a powerful witness to a life transformed… but it would be foolish to think this is easy or natural for us. Remember Adam’s sin? A consequence of original sin is disordered affections... we often desire what is not God's hope for us... His plans are greater than we can imagine. Original sin is that “computer virus” which keeps misdi-recting our search attempts towards that which is easiest and most immediately gratifying, while unconscious of, ignoring, or unaware of the consequences of our behav-ior. We are like two year olds in our mother’s shopping cart. We reach out for everything that catches our eye, “I want, I want.” We grab things, “Mine, mine.” We pout and throw a fit if we don’t get things our way and don’t care that these things come at a price.

Our instincts are stained by original sin. They are uncon-scious reflexes. We respond with what is natural or what experience has taught us works. They are about protect-ing and taking care of me. My immediate needs are para-mount… and we tend to those actions and behaviors which are most familiar and comfortable. Even when we know they are wrong, habits easily continue even if physically or spiritually harmful. Please realize that al-

though a desire by itself is not a sin, choices and actions can be… and this is living in the flesh. I am the center.

Living in the Spirit is built on love: wanting what is best for the other. I rejoice when THEY have what they need. I rejoice in THEIR happiness. Because it is about “them” we are patient as we realize it is on their and God’s time-table and is unlike the whopper of the flesh “my way, when I want it, how I want it.” Yet keep in mind that liv-ing in the Spirit is not following random feelings which as a consequence of original sin can be poor guides, but rather living a conscious and intentional life as Christ’s disciple committed to live in the Spirit.

This ongoing “call to conversion” redirects us to that which will have the most meaning, what others expect of us or what we expect of ourselves. We make a decision to be more, to be better: to be different. We use the gift of reason and seek to discern… the right, the true: the way. It is premeditated and embraces the necessary sac-rifice which is needed to lead us closer to the person we are striving to become… perhaps following a diet and exercise program for our body… and for Christians… what we believe God is calling us to be… recalling com-mandments, Jesus’ teachings and the church’s guid-ance… as we follow an exercise program for our soul and our decision to live in Him. We examine our conscience daily to reflect upon where we have been faithful, giving thanks and rejoicing, as well as where we have come up short, asking for mercy and grace.

Living as a Christian doesn’t just happen. By our nature, instincts and desires we are selfish, self-centered brats. Gospel values need to be experienced, explained, stud-ied, practiced and prayed. Maybe that is why some peo-ple may ask, “Are you a practicing Catholic?” Just as fol-lowing an exercise program or being on a team require persistence, time and effort… so too being Christian is much more than just letting water flow over us.

As we come to the close of this month in honor of our Blessed Mother I encourage us all to at least pray three Hail Mary’s a day asking for her intercession and protec-tion. Also the next time you find yourself waiting, why not use it as an opportunity to pray rather than become impatient? Patience is a virtue which requires practice.

Have a blessed weekend!

From Fr. Bill
