GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
We are star!ng another 13-week grief support group on
June 20, 2018. We use the Griefshare program, a special, lay
-led weekly seminar and support group that embraces a
biblical, Christ-centered approach to grief
(www.griefshare.org).
Please join us for help and encouragement a'er the death
of a loved one. We provide a safe and loving environment to
encourage sharing and exchanging of concerns and feelings
as you are comfortable.
This group is open to all grieving people in our community,
regardless of religious affilia!on. Please pass the informa!on
along to anyone you know who may need it. People may join
the group at any point during the 13 weeks; each session
stands alone. People are able to repeat the en!re 13-week
program or par!cular sessions for as long as they need.
The mee!ngs are held on Wednesdays in St. Michael Hall,
138 Fairfield Street, from 3:30-5:00%$ but we join for coffee
and fellowship any !me a'er 3:00%$.
The workbook fee is $20 and scholarships are available. Reg-
istra!on informa!on is available at the St. Mary Parish Office
or online at the Griefshare website: (h<ps://
www.griefshare.org/groups/94394). Please contact Be<e
Ross at 803.649.4777 ext 101 or [email protected]
for addi!onal informa!on or ques!ons.
I will turn their mourning into joy; I will console and
gladden them a!er their sorrows— Jeremiah 31:13
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Welcome to our summer seminarian, Rafael Gha<as! Rafa is
entering 2nd
year theology at St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston,
Texas. Rafa’s home parish is St. Andrew’s in Myrtle Beach. Be
sure to give him a warm St. Mary’s welcome when you see him!
“This is my Body… This is my Blood of the covenant” (Mark 14:22,
24). “My Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink.” (John
6:54-55).
Jesus was unambiguous about Who we receive in Holy
Communion. The Church both East and West has maintained that
– in some wonderful, mysterious way – at the words of Christ
through the ordained priest, simple bread and wine completely
become the en!re Christ – Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity – in
their substance (i.e., what they are), while the appearance
remains the same. This is called the Real Presence of Christ and
transubstan!a!on.
On the feast of Corpus Chris!, I always like to give a reminder
about the most loving and respec>ul manner in which we as
Catholics are asked to receive Holy Communion. It is no less than
the King of the universe that we are receiving into the temple of
our bodies. Always keep in mind that this is no ordinary food.
Catholics in a state of grace who have fasted for one hour
(except for water and medica!on) come forward at the
procession to receive Holy Communion. As one approaches the
Holy Sacrament, a bow of the head is made out of reverence.
The Sacred Host must be consumed in front of the minister.
Receiving the Sacred Host on our tongues is always acceptable.
A'er the minister says, “The Body of Christ,” respond, “Amen,”
and open your mouth with your tongue towards the front (but
not actually “s!cking your tongue out”). In the United States, we
may alterna!vely receive in the hand, but in this manner: St. Cyril
of Jerusalem (4th century) said, “Make your le! hand a throne
for your right, since your right hand is about to welcome a King.
Cup your palm and receive in it Christ's Body, saying in response,
‘Amen.’ Then carefully . . . consume It, being careful not to drop a
par"cle of It.” (A le'-handed person would reverse the hands.)
Thus, two hands are required to exercise this op!on. If you
cannot receive with both hands (child in arms, etc.), please
receive on the tongue. Also, Communion is never “snatched”
from the hand of the minister.
If choosing to receive the Precious Blood, respond, “Amen,” to
the minister and, taking the chalice, take a small sip and return it
to the minister. Note that taking the Host to a chalice and
“dipping” it in the Precious Blood is never permi<ed. People with
allergies that make them unable to receive the Sacred Host (e.g.,
celiac disease) may opt to receive only the Precious Blood. In all
cases, a person receives the fullness of Christ’s grace, whether
one receives the !niest piece of the consecrated Host, or the
smallest drop from the chalice. Therefore, our Church’s long-
standing tradi!on of simply receiving the Sacred Host remains
always an op!on. One is never required to receive from the
chalice – Christ is not separated.

In the back of the church and near the transit doors, you
will find a paddle with a cross on it for the use of
parishioners who cannot walk to the front of the church to
receive Holy Communion due to their disability or age.
Parishioners or family members are encouraged to pick one
up before mass. It can then be held up during Communion
for the Usher to guide a Communion Minister to where
they are so they can receive the Eucharist at their seat.
Please return them a#er Mass. Thank you.
Thank You from the Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus would like to thank the parishioners
of St. Gerard's and St. Mary's for their support the week-end
May 19th and 20th. We had a tootsie roll drive to support

Helping Other People Every Day
The drive was very successful, we collected $2,280.42.
This money along with the upcoming Tootsie Roll Drive will
be used to help people in our community with intellectual
disabili!es, and support the Special Olympics of Aiken, of

Regina Familia - Queen of the Family
The family tree was used here to represent all human families and our Chris!an family. The ini!als,
“JMJ”, are at the base of the tree and are part of the root system. Jesus, Mary and Joseph make up the
Holy Family and are a great source of strength for all families. They root us deep in the ground of faith,
hope and love. Our love for others and for God should never be stagnant. It should con!nue to grow and
become more alive as we spread our arms out in service of others. Queen of the Family, pray for us.
