Expanding the Zone…

Most people find it a little

shocking to find out that I am

much more introverted than I

come across. They are

equally flummoxed when I

tell them I am not very good

at the whole hospitality

thing. And small talk… it’s

almost painful for me - unless I am friends with you - and then small talk is

great! The truth is, I am probably more awkward than I would like to admit.

And all of this creates a Karen who is rather content to keep in my happy

little bubble where very little challenges me to grow. In this bubble, I can

be tricked into thinking I am doing pretty well.

The truth is, I, like most people, love to feel comfortable. It’s easy. And,

well… it’s comfortable. But then, in those moments when I am quiet and reflec-

tive, I realize that I am also very restless. Being made in the image of God

necessitates that I desire greatness. God is great - and If I am truly made

with the stamp of imago Dei (image of God), then I am actually made for

greatness! The restlessness I feel is really my innate desire to be great.

Greatness doesn’t happen within the confines of your comfort zone. Great-

ness happens when you step out of your zone and enter into the world

around - all of the while carrying the light of Christ within our hearts. You

see, the greatest deeds done in the world can still feel empty without Jesus.

Likewise, there have been great saints who lived their entire life in obscurity

and their lives were truly full and truly amazing beyond words. The greatness

we are made for is a greatness that longs to be defined by the God of the

universe. The very same God who, as we celebrate this weekend, trans-

forms bread into Himself - all so we can be filled with Him, is the very

same God who longs to make us great according to His standard.

And so, will we take this gift He gives us back into our comfortable lives? Or

will we go, allow ourselves to be a little uncomfortable and bring Jesus into the

world?

Last week, given the craziness in our world, I decided I needed to do some-

thing that is not easy for me - at all. I went and hung out with my neighbors.

That probably sounds really silly. But I am a renter, the people who live around

me are renters and I work very weird hours for most of the year (except of

course during pandemics - then I have a very boring and predictable sched-

ule). And… I live most of my life in a church bubble. I interact with many differ-

ent types of people in the church world, but the vast majority of the people I

interact with are either friends with me because of my faith, or are people I

know because of my faith. That is not the case in my neighborhood. And given

what I said earlier - I don’t like small talk, I am rather reserved at first and I’m

a little awkward - these things are really hard for me to do. But the things that

are often the most worthwhile are never easy - like being Jesus to the

world. Even when it is hard. Or, maybe, especially when it is hard.

I believe 2020 is turning in a year that will teach us what it really means

to be human and to be Church. The world will not be changed by Christians

who want to be comfortable. It will be changed by people who are willing to

radically encounter Jesus and who are willing to bring that encounter to

the world.

So where are you willing to get uncomfortable?
