The Firecube range of stoves from Burley are contemporaryvariations of their incredibly popular Fireball, the world’s mostefficient wood burning stoves.

Such amazing efficiencies are achieved using patented technologydeveloped in the UK. Air is introduced into the combustion chamberto create a vortex, ensuring virtually complete combustion of notonly the fuel, but also the soot and ash.

The mesmeric flame picture created when the stove is burning hasto be seen to be believed, whatever the weather outside, you will bewarm, comfortable and relaxed.

Room seal your Burley stoveThe majority of stoves draw their airfrom the room, often through vents atthe top or bottom of the door. Whilstthis is a very simple and cheapmethod, drawing air from the front ofthe fire for combustion means thatyou are dragging huge amounts ofwarm air from the room (which youhave already paid to heat) and losingit up the chimney. The averagechimney will drag all the warm airfrom your room once every singlehour – 24 hours a day, 365 days ayear. That is an awful lot of heat youare losing. This is replaced by cold airfrom outside, creeping aroundwindows and under doors, chillingyour entire house.

Burley stoves draw all their air througha vent at the rear where it is cooler. If you wish, you may attach theoptional room sealing kit to the backof the stove so it only draws cold airfrom outside meaning all the lovelyheat stays in your room, radiatingoutwards through your home. Britishstandards state that any room with astove rated greater than 5kW musthave an air vent fitted. With the roomsealing kit fitted to the stove you donot need to fit a vent in the room, conserving yet more energy.

Standard room seal kit or angled room seal kitThe Standard kit connects directly from the rear of the fire to the back wall. The Angled kit exits at 900 from the rear of the fire. This can then be connectedto standard ducts (available as shown or from builders’ merchants), to create apath to an outside wall. A maximum of four 900 angles may be used.

The idea which drove the design of the Burleystove was to invent the cleanest burning andmost energy efficient wood burning stovepossible.

At up to 89.8% efficient and with innovativetechnology which has been developed to extractthe heat and keep it in your house, Burley Fireballstoves do not simply beat the competition by afew percent, but by a country mile.

Three part combustionBurning wood efficiently requires a primary, secondary and tertiary combustion process.

Primary combustionPrimary combustion is the initial burning of thewood at relatively low temperatures. Duringprimary burn, water is evaporated and largeamounts of creosote gas are produced. Thiscreosote holds 60% of the potential energy of thewood, but is often just deposited on the inside ofthe stove and the lining of the flue, which causeschimney fires.

Secondary combustionIf, however, the combustion chamber is designedcorrectly by having sufficient insulation to raise thecore temperature to 400ºC, and the correctamount of air is introduced, this creosotespontaneously combusts. This creates a chainreaction which increases the temperature insidethe stove from 400ºC to 600ºC with no extra useof fuel. This is the secondary burn.

Introducing the airThe Burley range of stoves has a unique andpatented system of introducing air forcombustion, this is called The Fireball . A tubularframework channels air from the intake at the rear, around the fuel bed where it is preheated. Theframework extends up each corner of thecombustion chamber where the hot air is injectedhorizontally along the inside of the stove. Thiscreates a vortex which spins anticlockwise andensures every area of the fire box receives exactlythe correct amount of oxygen.

Tertiary combustionTertiary combustion occurs by fully burning thecarbon, charcoal and ash which is left behind. These contain a huge amount of energy andprovide a long rate of heat. Anyone who hasbarbecued will be aware of how much heat ispresent in semi-combusted wood, blacksmithsmelt steel on it.

The vortex created by the Fireball technology alsoenvelops the entire fuel bed, burning it socompletely that there is no need for an ash pan.100kg of wood can be reduced to 1 pint of ash (aratio of 350:1) which is simply scooped out. Nomore carrying bucket loads of ash through thehouse every time you want a fire.

100kg of logs can be reduced to one pint of ash.

Quaternary combustionTo create even more heat for your room and lesssoot for your chimney, Burley’s stoves have aunique quaternary (fourth) combustion process. As the hot gases exit the combustion chamberthey pass through a mesh filter. The mesh isheated to such a high temperature that when anyparticles of soot or creosote which have escapedthe secondary combustion touch it, they areignited on contact.

ResultsMaking a stove which will burn wood is verysimple and cheap. Producing and designing a topquality stove which will burn wood efficiently andcleanly is very difficult and is expensive. Duringproduct approval, when the European test housewas measuring the emissions from the Burleystove, the combustion was so clean theyassumed that their gas analyser had broken andsent it away for recalibration.

Glass doorAs two of the main reasons for buying a stove areto be mesmerised by the flame picture and todefrost your backside in the radiated heat, Burleywanted the largest possible window. Due to itssize the screen has to withstand massivetemperature fluctuations and thermal shock so itis actually ceramic and not conventional glass.Ceramic glass is very expensive, despite this yourstove is double glazed which helps keep it cleanand promotes secondary combustion.

Wood or multi-fuelMany people ask for multi-fuel stoves in the beliefthat they can burn any household rubbish, youcan’t. A multi-fuel stove is not as efficient as awood burning stove. Wood is far greener, cheaper, cleaner and gives a much nicer flamepicture. Our advice would be ‘don’t compromise, potato peelings are not a source of fuel’. We aresure that once you buy a wood burner you willonly want to burn wood, but in the off-chancethat you do want to burn coal, Burley produce amulti-fuel grate for some models which can easilybe retro-fitted into the stove.

Going the extra mileWe don’t want you to be pleased with your Burley stove, we want you to be delighted. We listen to ourcustomers and constantly make improvements where possible. We try to enhance your enjoyment withuseful extras shown above. We have real people in our office in England who can speak to youknowledgeably should you have any questions or problems.

Not going the extra mileOne of your reasons for buying a stove may be to reduce your carbon footprint. Burley are proud to notonly manufacture our stoves in Britain, but where possible to also source British components. We insistthat our steel is not just rolled in Britain (which allows it to say ‘British steel’) but is smelted in Britain.

We have a never ending policy of assessment and implementation to reduce our impact on theenvironment. This includes generating our own electricity with a 200kW array of PV panels on ourfactory roof which provides most of our requirements as well as providing power for up to 70 houses atweekends. Nearly all heating in the factory is re-circulated heat from fires and stoves which are beingtested, our salesmen only drive cars which exceed 80 mpg, the offices are heated by biomass.

In 2014 Burley became a zero carbon company, we generate more energy than we use.
