The$Pressies$Scribblings:$Summer&is&here&June&First.& Its&12C&(54F),&cloudy&and&windy&and&Yesterday's&tennis&and&Cricket&were&interrupted&by&showers.&Let's&hope&the&sun&will&shine&in&mid&June&(18F21)&when&we&host&the&Liverpool&Hope&University&InternaJonal&Tennis&Tournament.&&

Local& tennis& enthusiasts& will& enjoy& the& final& of& the& Liverpool& and& District& Group& mixed& doubles&compeJJon&on&Sunday&21st.&

Last&month& I& visited& the&great&World&War&baTle&Sites& in&Flanders&and& I&had& the&honour&of& laying&a&wreath&at& the&gravestone&of&Captain&Noel&Chavasse,&our& former&member&and&gave&a&eulogy&to&this&unique&double&VC.&

The& Chavasse& lunchJme& lectures& are& well& established& and& Simon& La& Frenais& gave& a& beauJfully&illustrated&talk&on&Charles&Darwin&which&was&well&aTended&and&boosted&the&Clubs&Chavasse&LiX&Fund.&&

The&next&talk&is&by&Sue&Newton&MBE&on&Philanthropy&on&June&25th.A&splendid&buffet&lunch&is&included&as&always&and&usually&served&by&Cathy&Shannon,&the&subject&of&this&month’s&staff&profile.Chris Evans

Tennis:$

The&season&is&cracking&on&at&pace.&Our&Men's&A&team&have&had&3&wins&and&2&defeats,&having&played&the&toughest&matches.&In&addiJon&partnerships&are&beginning&to&gel&so&they're&gathering&momentum.&&

The&Men's&B& team&have&had&a& similar& successful& run&with&Al&managing& to& talk& to& anyone&who&will&listen&about&their&success.&He&is&very&proud&of&his&new&notepad&and&even&newer&organisaJonal&skills.&&

Kieran,&Men's&C&team&captain,& is&already&preparing&to&liX&the&trophy&and&has&gone&as&far&as&making&suit&hire&enquiries&for&the&do.&He&is&very&proud&of&his&winning&team&and&we&hope&to&see&him&on&the&podium.&&

The& Ladies'&A&have&won&3& and& lost& 1& and& currently& lie& in& second&place& in& the& top&division& and& the&Ladies&B&are&finding&their&feet.

On&Saturday&all&tennis&courts&were&in&full&use&with&a&healthy&number&parJcipaJng&in&social&tennis&and&the& Fairlawn& Trophy& (in& its& 50th& year)& was& an& exciJng,& tough& challenge.& The& end& result& was& well&deserved&by&Liverpool&Cricket&Club&and&we&beat&Rainford&6F2$

Squash:$

Harding$Brother’s$Success!Cory$Harding&(age&9)&won&the&under&11’s&awesome&Sports&Manchester&Northern&Open&in&May.&&Cory&did&extremely&well&only&dropping&a&game&in&the&whole&tournament,&even&though&a&strong&Welsh&team&travelled&to&the&event.&

His&older&brother&Lewis& (age&12)&competed&in&an& under& 13& England& Squash& Silver& event& in&Hull.& The& standard& at& the& event& was& of& the&highest& standard& with& Lewis& having& an&extremely& difficult& draw.& He& managed& to& get&through& to& the& semi& final,& beaJng& several&internaJonal& juniors& from& Pakistan& and&Finland.&Unfortunately&he&lost&3F2&11/9&in&the&semiFfinal.& Lewis& won& the& 3F4& playFoff& to&eventual& come& 3rd,& which& is& a& great&achievement&at&this&type&of&event.

Hoyle’s$Last$Stand$

The& squash& secJons& end& of& season& team& tournament& has& been& a& great& success.& Four& teams& of& 7&players& played& each& other& throughout& May& for& the& honour& of& being& name& end& of& season& team&champions.&&

The&idea&of&the&event&is&to&get&team&and&social&players,&together&in&&

a&team&format&compeJng&against&players&of&a&similar&standard&in&&

opposing&teams.&Player&secured&points&for&every&game&won&for&

&their&overall&team&score.&The&team&are&seeded&in&order&of&playing&

&standard&with&top&players&being&seeded&1&and&social/junior&players&&

down&the&playing&order.&This&ensures&there&are&some&classic&baTles&&

during&the&event.&Although,&the&overall&priority&for&the&event&is&social&&

and& fun,& although& you& might& not& think& this& if& you& were& watching&some&&

of&the&matches.&&

Several&juniors&parJcipated,&which&ensures&they&earn&their&stripes,&as&they&generally&get&to&play&the&Vets,&which&is&always&good&fun&watching&contracJng&styles.&Such&as&a&young&player&who&can&actually&move&around&the&court&and&a&Vet&who&has&no&intenJon&of&moving&at&all.&

This&year’s&overall&winners&were,&Team&Powell,&which&means&the&whole&secJon&won’t&hear&the&last&of&this&unJl&he&goes&off& to&University& in&October.&Although,&we&will&no&doubt& sJll&hear&about& it&every&Jme&he&comes&home&for&a&weekend.&

The&secJon&would&like&to&thank&Ben&Hoyle&for&organizing&the&event.&This&was&his&last&hooray&before&he&moves&to&Cumbria&with&his&family.&Ben&has&been&an&acJve&member&of&the&secJon&for&several&years&and&will&be&sorely&missed,&although&his&socks&won’t&be.$

Hockey:$

The&soFcalled&close&season&for&hockey&has&been&franJc.&&The&AGM&was&aTended&by&over&100&including&Guest&of&&Honour&Hans&Broekerman,&Principal&of&Liverpool&College,&&sponsors&Mr&and&Mrs&Alex&Price&and&Hockey&for&Heroes&&founder&Carl&Woods&and&a&good&Jme&was&had&by&all.&&

This&was&followed&by&the&fantasJc&news&that&Jenny$Ratcliffe&&had&been&awarded&the&England&Hockey&Young&Umpire&of&the&&Year&at&the&Annual&Dinner.&This&has&been&quite&a&year&for&Jenny.&&

She&has&umpired&many&NaJonal&League&and&several&&internaJonal&matches&and&at&the&same&Jme&has&been&&playing&&for&Liverpool&SeXon&herself&and&organising&summer&mixed&hockey.&&

The& second& year&of&Back% to%Hockey% run&by&Susie$McFarlane& and&Rachel$Kelly& helped&by&5th& team&captain&and&recent&mum,&Charley&Green&and&James&Lennox&has&been&even&more&successful&than&last&year&and&aTended&by&17&male&and&female&returners&to&hockey.&

Last&weekend&a&SeXon&men's&team&organised&by&Ciggy&and&James$Robinson&played&in&the&30th&game&of&the&Hockey&for&Heroes&tour.&The&tour&took&in&33&games,&over&10&days&and&included&climbing&up&2&peaks&(Ben&Nevis&was&cancelled&because&of&snow!)&The&super&fit&team&of&Heroes&narrowly&beat&us&by&8F4&despite&a&first&half&hat&trick&from&Joe&Lewis.&Our&midFsummer&fitness&failed&us!&

Each&week&the&convoy&of&men's&and&mixed&midFweek&midFsummer&teams& led&by&Peter&Kenyon&and&Jenny&Ratcliffe&has&travelled&to&Bowden&for&the&tradiJonal&summer&league.&

Cricket:$

The&Cricket&season&is&now&well&underway.&

The&1st&team&lie&fiXh&in&the&league,&only&a&handful&of&points&behind&second&place&and&with&our&new&recruits&seTling&in&well,&a&posiJve&season&is&envisaged.&

The&2nd&team&sit&at&the&top&of&the&league&with&6&wins&from&7&games,&whilst&the&3rd&and&4th&teams&progressing&well&and&are&fully&uJlising&the&input&from&some&of&our&junior&members.&

Junior& cricket& is& going& full& steam&ahead&with&U9,& 11,& 13& and&15&age& groups&experiencing&plenty&of&success.&

Our&U9s&recently&took&part& in&a&tournament&at&Warrington&CC&and&as&you&can&see&from&the&picture&below&bumped&into&a&very&famous&dad&who&was&on&hand&supporJng&his&son's&team.&

Well&done&to&their&coach&Peter&Roots&for&providing&our&young&players&of&the&future&with&such&a&great&experience&and&hopefully&we&have&a&Flintoff&or&two&in&the&ranks!&

The&U13’s&play&in&the&regional&semi&final&of&the&Lancashire&cup&on&5/6/15&which&we&will&report&on&in&the&next&ediJon.&

Rugby:$

It$ is$a$pleasure$to$announce$the$rugby$secOon$have$been$selected$as$ the$2015$Lancashire$ Junior$Club$of$the$Year.$

The& Board& of& the& Lancashire& County& RFU& chose& Liverpool& Collegiate& to& be& the& recipient& of& this&season's&Junior&Club&of&the&Year&award.&The&community&rugby&club,&established&in&1925,&now&boasts&15&teams&F&from&U7&through&to&1st&XV.&

This& is&a&recogniJon&of&the&great&season&the&club&has&had&in&league&and&cup&rugby,&with&the&1st&XV&having&'done&the&double'&along&with&numerous&successes&throughout&Mini&&&Junior&secJon.&

This& award& is& a& testament& to& the& hard& work& put& in& on& the& pitch& and& in& training& alongside& the&enormous&effort&put&in&off&the&pitch&by&the&commiTee.&

At&senior&level&the&1st&XV&finished&1st&in&South&Lancs/Cheshire&2&gaining&promoJon&into&South&Lancs&and&Cheshire&1,&alongside&winning&the&Lancashire&Plate.&

The&2nd&XV&secured&another&season& in&NOWIRUL&Division&1,& the&highest& league&the&team&has&ever&played& in.&With&opposiJon& including& the& second& teams&of& a& number&of&NaJonal& League& clubs& this&allows& players& to& face& a& good& quality& opposiJon,& producing& a& squad& of& players& who& are& also&comfortable&playing&1st&XV&rugby&and&aiding&the&rugby&secJon&as&a&whole.&

The&3rd&XV&gained&promoJon&in&the&2013/14&season,&progressing&from&Division&5&to&Division&4.&The&3s&finished&5th&in&the&league&F&a&great&achievement&considering&only&ever&playing&in&Division&5&since&their&incepJon.&

The&4th&XV&completed&their&first&ever&season& in&a&compeJJve& league,& fulfilling&the&vast&majority&of&their&fixtures&and&welcoming&a&number&of&new&players&to&the&game.&

The& Colts& side& had& a& successful& season&with& 6& players& going& forward& for& Lancashire& trials& and& one&player&playing&in&the&current&Lancashire&Colts&1XV&XV&and&another&playing&with&the&Irish&Exiles.&

The&Mini&and&Junior&secJon&has&had&a&number&of&successes&and&fared&well&against&most&teams&and&picking&up&some&trophies&in&the&end&of&season&tournaments.&U8s&came&runners&up&in&the&cup&and&the&U9s& won& the& plate& at& the& Southport& tournament,& the& U10s& also& won& the& plate& at& the& Hoylake&tournament&and&the&U15s&winning&the&Lancashire&Vase.&The&junior&secJon&finished&the&season&with&42&coaches&and&264&players.&

The&club&now&looks&forward&to&the&2015/16&season,&with&all&teams&playing&at&the&highest&level&they&ever&have&the&future&seems&both&challenging&and&bright.&
