Margaret Thomas Burke joins by Letter of Transfer from Tennesee. Margaret was a teacher in Minneapolis for 40 years. She was attracted to Moorings by its welcoming members and the various opportunities to serve. Margaret is artistic and enjoys art, bridge, reading and needlepoint.

Jesse Burke joins as an Affiliate member from Tennesee. Jesse is a retired orthodontist from Jackson, TN. He lives near the church and enjoys the friendly congregation at Moorings. Jesse likes to fish and read and considers himself a “jack of all trades.”

An exciting new step in the journey of our young Confirmands will take place at a New Member Inquiry Class on Sunday, May 7 following weeks of confirmation classes. They will experience the same process as other prospective members when they join the Moorings Presbyterian congregation. Our pastors, other church staff, and the New Members & Evangelism Committee members are truly enthusiastic about taking this step, feeling that it will strengthen the cross-generational bonds and communication at Moorings and will assure the Confirmands that they are extremely important, not only for the well being of our congregation, but also for strengthening the next generation of the universal church worldwide. Alicia Rowland, our Director of Youth Ministries, says of this new pattern, “This definitely meets two of our youth ministry goals: to engage the youth in the life of the church, and to provide opportunities for building relationships with other members across the age spectrum. We are excited to partner with an existing team to accomplish these longstanding goals.” This particular new members class will also be open to people of all ages who express direct interest in joining the church. Please join us in celebrating this grand new opportunity, as we prepare to welcome our newest members on May 21.

Strozier Library Refresh: Pardon Our Dust!

We have experienced an exciting surge of energy around the Strozier Library of late. Outgoing Library Chair, Diann Rinker, Deacon and member of Presbyterian Women, has assembled a new team that has many years of library experience among them.

The teams first order of business was to develop a clear mission statement. Second, the team set the goal to weed out moldy and outdated books. Team members Claudia Schmitt (Deacon and former librarian with the Collier County Public Library, and soon to head Moorings library team) and Karen McLean (former Media Specialist in the Collier County Public School system) have an impressive track record in working to keep library holdings up-to-date, focused on the mission and audience at hand.

Consistent with the draft mission statement (and our space constraints), the team is also paring down the holdings. For example, with the support and encouragement of our Director of Youth Ministries, Alicia Rowland, many of the holdings in the Youth section of the library will be donated to New Horizon Ministries, with the help and liaison work of Mary Lynn Moser from the Mission Outreach Committee (MOC). New Horizons is one of Moorings MOC mission partners. This is a wonderful way to affirm that relationship and support the educational goals of the children and youth in that program. What a wonderful internal and external partnership!

Also in the spirit of partnership, the library team offered many general-interest resources to the Handbell Choir for their garage

sale. In addition, the overflow of Bibles in the Library has been pared down. Again in partnership, the New Members & Evangelism Committee, the library team, and the book sale crew of the garage sale team will offer excess library Bibles, as well as other Bibles donated to the garage sale, as free gifts for interested shoppers. This is a wonderful opportunity to offer the gift of life.

Moreover, Preschool Director Nanette Rathbun has offered to help us build our holdings of parenting and family-related literature so that we might take steps to create a focused resource center for children and families to be used both by Preschool and our Children & Family Ministries families and staff. Along with the library team, we are looking at creative and appropriate ways to bring the other refreshed library resources into already existing traffic patterns around the church, maximizing the opportunities for members and friends to take advantage of these wonderful resources in a manner consistent with the original intent of the generous donors who made our library possible.

Stay tuned for more updates, and look out for flying dust!

Pictured above: New Library Chairperson, Claudia Schmitt (L) and Karen McLean (R) happily display the library's upcoming donations of books to New Horizons.

Summer Choir Begins Sunday, May 28Singers of all ages may join on Sunday mornings to sing God’s praises while the regular Wednesday evening rehearsals are suspended. We gather at 9:15 AM in the Crofts Music Center to prepare the anthem for that Sunday and learn ahead for coming weeks. We encourage YOU to get involved in the choir. It does not take advanced music knowledge to participate, only a love of singing and a willingness to serve God with your singing. We ask for advance notice of all who plan to sing, so that we can have music ready for you. Please contact Dr. Thomas Goetz (213-5246 or [email protected]) for more information on all things musical!

Sterritte Organ Featured In “Stay In May" Festival

The annual Stay in May festival in Naples features an Organ Crawl on Thursday, May 4, 12:30 PM – 6:00 PM. It is hosted by Michael Barone, the nationally known host and senior executive producer of America’s premier radio program featuring the pipe organ, “Pipedreams,” which is heard weekly throughout much of the country.

The Organ Crawl includes performances and discussions at four venues in Naples: Bower Chapel at Moorings Park, Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, and Moorings Presbyterian Church.

The MPC organ recital will be held at 5:00 PM. Performers for the entire afternoon are John Fenstermaker, Brice Gerlach, Mary Joy Silmaro, and Thomas Goetz. Tickets may be purchased online at the Stay in May website, www.stayinmay.com.

Music Ministry

Some of our church members might be aware that the Sterritte Family Organ is not yet complete in terms of the original design of the builder, Nichols and Simpson, Inc., of Little Rock, Arkansas. A complete Solo division was planned, but not built in 2008 when the main organ was built and installed. The present divisions include the Great, Swell, Choir, and Pedal divisions. We are thrilled to report that the Session, at their March 28 meeting, approved the contract for Nichols and Simpson to complete the organ by building the Solo division, as well as adding a mounted Grand Cornet stop to the Great division.

The Solo division will be installed in a chamber behind the pipe faҫade on the left side of the Crucifixion window.

We look forward to the completion of work by August 31, 2018. This project is made possible by a generous bequest from Ruth McNeal, who passed to her heavenly home in January of 2015. Ruth was an ardent supporter of the church and its music ministry, and we rejoice and give thanks, knowing that her spirit will live on through this new Solo division of the organ, as it leads us in worship and fellowship.

Music MinistryThe Piano Has Arrived!

The new sanctuary piano is in place in the Chancel, and was dedicated to the glory of God at the 10:00 AM service on April 23. The dedication prayer summarized the primary reason for the inclusion of this instrument in our place of worship: “May this piano, played alone or in concert with other instruments and voices, contribute to our resolve to go forth from this place always to do God’s will and serve humanity.” As part of the service, Alexandra (Sasha) Carlson played prelude and offertory music on the Fazioli piano. We are blessed to have Sasha as part of our church family, and we are thankful for her musical offerings during the service.

Many people have given generously and sacrificially so that this exceptionally fine and beautiful instrument might be purchased for the church. We are thankful for all who have been a part of this great endeavor, which is not only for our church family, but for the greater community. It was my great joy as Director of Music to see this project come together quickly as our church family caught the vision of how an exceptional concert piano will complement the beautiful Sterritte Family Organ. The piano was delivered by Euro Pianos Naples on Friday, April 21, 2017. After the instrument was set up, members of the Piano Task Force and others joined in singing the Doxology, Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow. It was a tearful moment, with tears of joy as we celebrated the beautiful music which will enrich our worship, and pray that the music will kindle in our hearts the flame of devotion to God and the work of Christ’s church.

The official impetus for procuring the instrument was a Piano Task Force formed in May of 2016 to determine the needs of the church regarding the sanctuary and chapel pianos. The task force made recommendations to the Worship and Music Committee, which in turn reported to the Session. The Fazioli model F278 grand piano, built in Sacile, Italy, was selected as the piano of first choice due to its superior quality and exceptional value. The Steinway piano which was in the sanctuary has been placed in Webster Chapel. The Session approved the purchase, pending receipt of all funds, at their March meeting. The piano was purchased with special gifts from church members and friends, at no expense to the budget of the church. The members of the Piano Task Force are: Alexandra Carlson, Gwen DeWitt, Jim DeWitt, Tom Edwards, Joan Haff, Mary Poston (Chair, Worship and Music Committee), and Tom Goetz (Moderator/ Director of Music). We thank them for their dedication and service to the church. Tom Goetz, Director of Music

Handbell Garage Sale AppreciationThe annual gargantuan garage sale on April 22 was a tremendous success, thanks to the many donors and helpers who generously contributed materials and time. This year was clearly one of the biggest and best, with a large quantity of items donated. It is great to be involved in the incredible organizational abilities of our volunteers, and I can see that this is an important ministry to givers, helpers and purchasers of goods. People like to know that their gently used items will

be put to good use in another home. There are also many people in our community who rely on rock-bottom prices, so that they can afford to buy clothing or other items not only for themselves, but also to send to family and friends in other countries. Proceeds of the sale enable our handbell program to continue by assisting with expenses in several areas, including the purchase of new music, handbell parts and maintenance, cases, and members’ attendance at regional, national and international handbell events. Throughout the year, over fifty children, youth and adults are involved in ringing, offering their praise to God through the beauty of handbells in our worship services and occasional public concerts. Through the garage sale we reach out to the greater community. I am so grateful to all who donated and worked tirelessly to strengthen our bonds and connect with the people of Naples. To God be all glory!

The month of May is always bittersweet, as we say goodbye to our four-year-old children as they embark on a new adventure in life: Kindergarten. The four-year-old graduation will take place in The Sanctuary on May 24th, for families and friends. The children will perform songs from the school year and receive graduation certificates. Earlier in the month they will hold a Mother’s Day Tea for their mommies! They will sing songs, present them with a gift, and enjoy tea and cookies in honor of their mothers!

The three-year-olds will learn about creatures of the deep and perform a spring program for their parents, in celebration of the arrival of summer vacation. Our two-year-old classes will learn about the ocean, sing ocean songs, and make and paint ocean puppets!

To all of our families we wish a safe and fun-filled summer. Our love and sincere thanks, to all of our four year old families for sharing your children with us, as they leave Moorings and move on to elementary school. To our returning families we look forward to seeing everyone in September as we open for another exciting year at Moorings.

Youth Day Mision PenielMision Peniel began as a pastoral ministry of charity and service, providing food,

clothing, fellowship and emergency supports to farmworkers in Immokalee, Florida in September 2006.

We had an awesome day working at Mision Peniel’s new location - one block from the bus drop off for the farm workers. The location and new added space promises to enhance their already amazing ministry. This was just

their second week serving from this location. They are still working on getting their kitchen in full operation in order to serve fresh cooked meals.

We made 500 ham and cheese sandwiches, put together lunch bags, and bags with dried beans and rice.

Their clothing ministry is in full swing. They alternate weeks handing out clothing to men and women. We sorted, sized and put together bags of women’s clothing to hand out. They also have children’s clothing and diapers for those in need.

Confirmation 2017Please continue to pray for our 2017 Confirmation Class as they finish their class time together and begin writing their personal statements of faith - reflections on where they are now in their faith journey. During their time together, they have been pursuing Christian practices - reading scripture, praying, serving others, and deepening their relationships with one another - as well as studying catechism questions, learning about what it means to be Presbyterian, and discussing the basics of the Christian faith.

Thank you Tom. It was an amazing experience. I truly felt the love and support from each and every person in that service. I enjoyed sharing and having the opportunity to have personal conversations with  all  who  approached  me  after  the service. Mission OutreachJoin the Haiti Team!

Haiti is one of our church’s two international priorities for mission outreach. We support the work of two wonderful Christian organizations who are having a real impact on lives in that challenging country: Love the Children and Medical Benevolence Foundation.

Bob Lichy, who leads our church's Haiti team, as well as Angela Bruckner and Tom Moser who serve on the team, would like to invite others who have an interest in Haiti to participate. It will not be necessary to travel to Haiti. The team will focus on the best ways to support Love the Children and Medical Benevolence Foundation, as well as how to build greater awareness among our congregation of Haiti's challenges and what our church is doing to help people there with both physical and spiritual needs.

Contact Bob Lichy to learn more, if you may be interested. Email: [email protected], phone: 239.353.2482.
