We have resolved that things are going to be different next year. Some of us plan to exercise more; others to save more. Some of us might even resolve to be more frequent in our attendance at church. Some of us might resolve to be easier on ourselves, to take time to stop and smell the roses, perhaps even to listen for the voice of the living God. Things are going to be different at Trinity in 2011, that’s for sure. Along with a new year, shortly you will welcome a new rector. I hope you will consider making some resolutions about how, together with your new rector, you will exercise your own ministries in the coming year. A few suggestions: 1. Look forward. Trinity has a history to be proud of, but now is not the time to rest on your laurels. God has exciting, challenging new plans for Trinity. Resolve to work together to discern where God is leading this faith community. 2. Get involved; don’t sit on the sidelines. You were called into this community for a purpose. Each of you has unique gifts. Each of you can make a unique contribution. Together you can do more than you ever imagined. Don’t think, “I used to be active. Now it’s someone else’s turn.” Listen, how is God calling you to contribute to the work of the community? 3. Give and give thanks. As Senior Warden Chris Adler pointed out at all three services on December 12, money allows us to get things done. As you are able, please con- tinue to support Trinity financially. Your contributions allow this parish to continue to do Christ’s work in the world. When you give do it in thanksgiving. Thank God for your blessings. Share those blessings with all of God’s people. And finally, 4. Pray. Pray without ceasing. Pray in thanksgiving for the gift of God’s Son, Jesus. Pray to discern the will of the Holy Spirit. Pray to be continually aware of the presence of the Holy One in your lives and in the lives of those you love. Let your lives be prayer. God is in control and we are not. But make some resolutions anyway. If God laughs at your plans it’s okay. Better to make God laugh than cry. Know that I thank God for each one of you and that I wish you every blessing at Christmas and in the New Year! Stephanie+ A Message From The Interim Rector

is all that I do

with all that I have

after I say

“I believe.”

New Year’s Resolutions

“You know how to make God laugh? Tell him you’ve made plans. “ This old joke is a good way of reminding us that we are not the ones in control; God is. We hear that over and over again but it’s the kind of thing that’s easy to forget. At least it is for me. As we prepare for the beginning of another year some of us are making plans, or resolutions. We have resolved that things are going to be different next year. Some of us plan to exercise more; others to save more. Some of us might even resolve to be more frequent in

our attendance at church.

A few suggestions:

As you are able, please con-tinue to support Trinity financially. Your contributions allow this parish to continue to do Christ’s work in the world. When you give do it in thanksgiving. Thank God for your blessings. Share those blessings with all of God’s people. And finally,

A New Year’s Prayer

Dear Lord, please give me…

A few friends who understand me and remain my friends;

A work to do which has real value,

without which the world would be the poorer;

A mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not

blazed;

An understanding heart;

A sense of humor;

Time for quiet, silent meditation;

A feeling of the presence of God;

The patience to wait for the coming of these things,

With the wisdom to recognize them when they come.

Amen.

CONGRATULATIONS

...to Trinity parishioner, Jamie Bass!

On December 19, Jamie received the Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America in a Court of Honor led by his father who is the Scoutmaster of Troop 5.

The Surprise Shop and Prologue

We will be planning a luncheon for the men and women of Prologue on Tuesday January 18th at 11:00 a.m. If you participate in the Dollar for Dinner program you will be helping to fund this meal for forty . If you prefer to cook or provide food call Erin at 410-828-9343; she will let you know the items needed. Thank you!

We would like to update you on what Prologue, Inc. is all about. It is a not-for-profit organization based out of Pikesville. They work in Baltimore and Carroll Counties to provide respect, dignity and hope to adults experiencing homelessness and mental illness. Their Homeless Outreach Program (HOP) provides services to those chronically homeless who are in shelters on the streets or in campsites. They link people to the medical care, housing and other critical resources that are available.

Trinity's house on the corner of Joppa Road and Baltimore Avenue (once the home of Trinity’s Associate Rec-tors) is Prologue's satellite outreach center. The men and women who are homeless and mentally ill in our area are able to do their laundry there, take a shower, find clothes provided by the Surprise Shop, meet with case managers and just put their feet up and rest.

Through the United Way and Constellation Energy all of the carpeting is being replaced and the rooms are being painted this month. Prologue however is in need of outdoor work. They need new gutters and an exte-rior paint job. If anyone has ideas for getting this done please contact Stuart Hancock, Director of HOP, 410- 653- 6190 X1322 . Their website is www.prologueinc.org .

Trinity’s search process for a new rector Your Search Committee has been

hard at work. We began with over

100 names, carefully narrowed

those down and conducted tele-

phone interviews on a weekly ba-

sis over the last several

weeks. Following the telephone

interviews, we further narrowed

the list and have submitted a list

of several names to the Diocese for the approval of the Bishops. We

plan to visit these candidates in January and February. Please keep

us and our mission in your prayers.

From Trinity’s Junior Warden, Nancy Nicholson, About The Ministry of Committees:

Have you ever commented to a friend, ―You know, at Trinity, they really ought

to…..‖ I’m sure you have a great idea: raise more money, fix the damaged wall by the

stained glass window, enlarge the parking lot, start a singles group, whatever. I’ll let

you in on a little secret: there is no ―they‖. There is only ―we‖.

At Trinity, we welcome your ideas and do the work we ought to do through the

Trinity committees. Recently the vestry asked me to look at the committee structure

and change some of the names to make it clear what the committee’s purpose is. We

had renamed them several years ago to have them match our mission statement, but

it became clear that it was hard to understand what the purpose of the committee

might be. The table below lists the committees, the chairperson, and the vestry liaison. New members and new ideas

are always welcome. We need you to share your time and talent (as well as your treasure) with your Trinity friends.

New Dedicated Fund Established

Our thanks go to Bob and Betty Denison who have established a fund to care for the

three gardens around the church. Specifically, these are the garden around the sign,

the front of Memorial Hall, and the entryway to Memorial Hall. These gardens are all

designated as Memorial Gardens. The fund will pay for the weeding and mulching of

the gardens next year, beginning in April and ending in October. If you would like to

contribute toward the upkeep of these gardens your donation will be gratefully ac-

cepted.

Rite 13 & Journey To Adulthood (J2A) Our Rite 13 group has 14 students in grades 5-8. Leaders Greg & Heather Ayotte and Scott & Angela

Hinson serve on alternate Sundays to help the group learn and laugh.

The class deals with such things as prayer; ways of seeing and encoun-

tering God ; possessions and their importance in our lives; and trusting

God in a faith journey together. Every effort is being made to keep

the process experiential, with a hands-on and “hearts on” focus. This

is the first phase of the “Journey to Adulthood,” which culminates in

Confirmation and a Pilgrimage. The group helped with “Parents’ Night

Out,” beginning the fundraising for their 2014 Pilgrimage.

Our 12-member J2A class (grades 9-12) is preparing for Confirmation

(spring, 2011) And Pilgrimage (C.A.P.). They are learning about the

Episcopal faith through the book My Faith, My Life., which was pre-sented to them with a special blessing on December 12. New people

are always welcome! See page 6 for more information on the group.

Adult Formation Programs

Sunday Adult Forum: Banned From the Bible—

Books Rejected and Forbidden

Haven't you always known that some things were left out of the Bible? Now you can have more knowledge to help fill in the blanks. After Constantine the Great converted to Christianity in the 4th century, a serious effort was made to compile a Christian Bible, including both Hebrew scriptures and Christian manuscripts. It took another 40 years before a final list of New Testament books was officially canonized by the church. Some of the most popular were excluded. BANNED FROM THE BIBLE uses video, lecture, and discussion to examine the stories in some of these books, how they were rediscovered, and what they might mean to us today.

Included in our series, led by LuAnn Brown, will be: January 16: The Life of Adam & Eve— A more detailed story

than the one in Genesis, this book includes jealous angels, a more devious serpent, and more information about Eve’s fall

from grace from her point of view. January 23: The Book of Enoch— This scripture reads like a

modern action film, telling of fallen angels, bloodthirsty giants, an increasingly flawed human population on earth, and a divine judgment to be rendered. Though denied a place in most western Bibles, it has been used for centuries by Ethiopian Christians. Large portions of this book were found as part of

the Dead Sea Scrolls. January 30: The Infancy Gospel of Thomas— The only book

that deals with the young Jesus, it portrays Jesus as a strong-willed child, whom one historian describes as “Dennis the Men-ace as God.” Perhaps too disturbing for inclusion in the Bible,

this book seems to contain traditions also known to the Koran.

Issues for Parents: Sunday Discussion Group

Many of us in modern culture have experienced the disappearance of the extended family - that network of parents and grandparents, married siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins of all ages and

their spouses --whom parents relied on for centuries to answer questions, resolve doubts and dilemmas, lend a sympathetic ear, and pass on experience. Today many parents feel isolated as never before. For this reason, Trin-ity offers a mutually supportive parent group that meets on Sunday mornings at 10:00. Join like-minded, interesting people who share the same principles but have different temperaments, backgrounds, and points of view to discuss family issues and share experiences. We have formed the same natural, mutually supportive network that our fore-bears relied on for centuries to clear up questions and stay on track. Grab some coffee, tea, and a snack at coffee hour, and join us as you can. Our facilitator is Joanne Chapline, Assistant Principal at The Lutherville Lab School.

Great Figures of the New Testament— Tuesday mornings at 10:30, beginning January 4, 2011

The New Testament teems with char-acters: John the Baptist, Joseph and Mary, magi, shepherds, fishermen, kings, Roman centurions, Pharisees and Sadducees, Syro-Phoenicians, Samaritans, saints and traitors. Beginning on Tuesday, January 4, the Tuesday morning Bible class will begin a series on the Great Figures of the New Testament, nar-rated by Amy-Jill Levine. Dr. Levine is Professor of Relig-ion at the Vanderbilt University Divinity School. She has lectured at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, and those who have heard her will attest that she is dynamic, witty, and knowledgeable. At each session we will show a lec-ture, and Jack Gillett will lead us in discussion.

News of Trinity’s Youth

Fundraising: Trinity’s J2A group has been in high gear, raising funds for their July pilgrim-

age! In November & December they raked leaves for parishioners, wrapped gifts at Barnes & Noble, and helped with a TECC parents’ night out. Thanks to all who supported our youth by

helping with these money-making endeavors.

QUIZ NIGHT Save Saturday, February 19, 2011 for Trinity’s 3rd Quiz Night. Dennis King will serve as quizmaster, bringing his own imaginative and fiendish questions. Bring your friends, pool your knowledge, and you may

find you have all the answers – or at least most of them.

Dinner will be served as part of the event, which is from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Cost is $20/person. Proceeds will go toward the ex-

penses of the youth group’s pilgrimage to Colorado this July.

85 Rite 13 and J2A Youth from 6 Diocese of MD congregations met at the

Cathedral of the Incarnation on December 12, to watch “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” and discuss ways to par-ticipate in the “Advent Conspiracy,” which advocates the principles of worshiping fully, spending less, giving more, and loving all. After supper and skits, each person was given a dollar and anointed to go into the world to be God’s gifts and share God’s gifts. The evening concluded with a tour (in the rain) of the Hampden Christmas Lights. Ask a

young person from Trinity how they used their dollar to do good in the world.

Trinity Church Trinity’s Mission

Trinity Episcopal Church is an inclusive and caring Christ-centered commu-nity nurtured by our wor-ship and tradition. We ask God to strengthen and guide us as we live out our mission to wel-come and celebrate the diversity of all people through spiritual educa-tion, growth in faith, and service in Christ’s Name.
