Dear Friends, I continue to be surprised and delighted by the strength of the Holy Spirit at St. Matthew’s. As you know, I’m not talking about folks speaking in tongues or jumping and shouting, although there is nothing wrong with a jump and shout faith. I am talking about the stories of prayer that brings results and soothes the soul; the feeling of welcome extended to those who visit; the excitement over ministry and the openness of ministry to everyone; and the depth of our altar guild, for they sense the true sacredness of worship. The Holy Spirit is known here, and I would go so far as to say the Holy Spirit dwells here. Without your faithfulness, this would not be true. The Holy Spirit has certainly been moving lately. It is my joy and privilege to report to you that we have a new aspirant for Holy Orders. At just 20 years old, Mary Rosendale is young, just a junior at Mesa State. Mary was raised here at St. Matthew’s; her parents have moved to Parachute and attend church there, but this Is Mary’s church. We will soon convene a discernment committee for her, and I am in full support of this. You have to wonder, did God hit her with lightning? How did a call come to such a young, beautiful girl? How does a call come to anybody? Recall Elijah fleeing from the wrath of Jezebel, seeking God’s word. He waited in a cave. God’s word for Elijah came in a still, small voice. Samuel heard the word of God come to him so loudly it woke him up. Moses was confronted with a burning bush. It’s hard to ignore a burning bush! In each case: Elijah, Samuel, Moses, our existing aspirant Chris Lesley and now Mary Rosendale every time, God made himself heard. This is a voice that comes to us most often in prayer. Did Chris or Mary pray to be called to Holy Orders? I don’t think so. Imagine a light bulb being turned on, or a thick fog slowly clearing. Quickly or slowly the call appears and becomes undeniable, and when the individual can no longer deny it, the call sort of bubbles forth. What kind of church lifts up two people called to Holy Orders in the space of just over a year? It must be a church filled with the Holy Spirit. While it means a good deal to accept that God is calling you the priesthood and a life that is set apart, it is also something to hear a call to ministry, period. There are so many who drive the shuttle for folks at the homeless shelter, or volunteer at the center or the day center, those who provide for newborn babies where their parents cannot, those who teach our children and youth, those who donate food, those who volunteer at Marillac Clinic, take communion to those who cannot come to church and serve the Lord in so many ways. We have an environment at St. Matthew’s that is loving and supportive and the spirit is active and present and many good things come of this. Here is my answer to the question: how is it that we have lifted two people to seek Holy Orders? The answer lies with you: your faith, your presence, your prayers and your ministry. On behalf of both Chris and Mary, I thank you. Faithfully, Pastor Hollis THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF ST. MATTHEW’S EPISCO PAL CHURCH THE EVANGEL The Rev. Sr. Warden’s Report

One of the most thrilling things that can happen in a congregation is the announcement that a member is to start the discernment process leading to Holy Orders. Most of you know of Chris Lesley’s work for the past year with a discernment committee. Now, equally exciting, is the request for a discernment committee to work with Mary Rosendale, who is about to embark on the five-year quest toward becoming an Episcopal priest. For those of you who don’t know Mary, she is the daughter of Ed and Liz Rosendale who were active in St. Matthew’s until their move to Parachute several years ago. At one point they were the sponsors of the youth program. Mary returned to St. Mathew’s when she came back to Grand Junction to attend Mesa State College, where she will be a junior next year. Most recently at St. Matthew’s she has been leading a weekly Bible study group for young adults. For the past several months, Mary has been counseling with Pastor Hollis about the call to the priesthood she has received. The official process starts with the Bishop’s office sending a trainer to St. Matthew’s to prepare a group from the congregation to work with the aspirant on discerning her call. That takes about a year. If that is successful, St. Matthew’s then nominates the aspirant for a review by Bishop O’Neil and a committee of the Diocese of Colorado toward becoming a postulant—a candidate to study for the clergy. If it all runs smoothly, it is about a five-year process, including three years in seminary. By the time you read this, Chris will have completed his aspirant year and should know if he has been recommended to go before

the Bishop. You may recall that Chris has delivered several thoughtful sermons during the past year and has taken part in a number of ministries, including the Altar Guild (good training for a future priest). So after many years of not having a member of St. Matthew’s aspiring to the priesthood, we now have two. This is an exciting time for the members of St. Matthew’s as they add their support of and prayers for Chris and Mary that their calls will be successful. My personal feeling is that, in a somewhat different way, this is as important to the Church in sustaining itself as attracting young families. Not nearly as important but nevertheless necessary, the Vestry at its June meeting approved a revised “Amended and Restated Articles of Incorporation of St. Matthew’s Parish.” This was reviewed with the congregation at the last annual meeting in January. Then the Foundation Board of the parish thought the Endowment article needed some revision. Working with the legal advice of Terry Farina, it was decided to strike the detail of that article and rely on the resolution that established the foundation years ago for the operating guidelines. The Amended and Restated Articles will again be taken to the next annual meeting for final adoption. In essence, the articles simply establish St. Matthew’s as a legal entity. Jr. Warden Garry DeGarmo presented a rendering of the proposed bell tower showing its location at the southeast corner of the building. That rendering is now on display in the gathering space. The two of us will be coming to—or will have come to—the three Sunday services to answer your questions about the project. There has been lots of activity around the church recently. Vacation Bible School was a hoot—36 youngsters learning and playing with the enthusiasm that only those 10 and younger can generate. Other folks were off to Cursillo for a long weekend. And Pastor Hollis and Youth Minster Kristen Lizotte took four teenagers on a mission to Southern California for a week of work projects and participating in the life of a vibrant metropolitan area. Financially, we seem to be in decent shape going into the slow financial months of the summer. Our operating income for the first five months was $158,000 and our expenses were $151,000. So we are just under $7,000 in the black for the year. We appreciate your faithful stewardship. Barclay Jameson

Youth & Family News

To the Entire Congregation at Saint Matthew’s: We want to thank you all for the opportunity to reach out within ourselves and in our faith. We never would have known how close we all could be or how strong our faith can shine if we were not given the wonderful opportunity to grow on our mission trip to California. We learned so much about ourselves and about one another; we truly feel blessed for being given this opportunity. Thank you for all that you made possible in prayer, donation and support. We have gained a new height in our faith and are very excited to share our experience with others. In God’s Grace and With Love for You All, Saint Matthew’s Youth Group

Cathedral Ridge: The Church Camp and Conference Center

Allan Conrad

In April the diocese purchased an existing property to be renovated and used by

various groups throughout the diocese. It now has a name, as announced by Bishop

O’Neill in his email to the clergy and the Standing Committee on June 2nd. I’d like to share that message with you as it contains the rationale for the name selection.

Dear Friends,

As you know, we recently acquired a beautiful 156-acre property, just outside of Woodland Park, that will

become a place set apart for conferences, retreats, and summer youth adventures in the days ahead.

I am writing you today to let you know that we have chosen a name for this special gathering place for

our diocesan life and ministry: Cathedral Ridge.

The property sits on a ridge, surrounded by the shelter of the forest and covered by a canopy of stars at

night. The name evokes the inspiring architecture of creation itself that lifts our eyes to heaven and calls

us all to a more transcendent vision of ourselves. As the name suggests, Cathedral Ridge is a place

apart—a sanctuary from home or work or school, where all of us can gather to build the vital

relationships that are so important to our common life and ministry and to grow in faith. Cathedral Ridge

will be a place where we can all discover and re-discover the divine gift of the Pentecost event—that

people gather, that God inspires, that eyes and hearts are miraculously opened, and the kingdom is

revealed.

The name was chosen in consultation with Linden Marketing Group, a marketing firm from

Carbondale. They conducted many focus groups to gather feedback and reaction all around the diocese,

and from groups outside the Episcopal Church who might use a property like Cathedral Ridge for a

meeting, workshop or retreat.

Over the next several months, the identity for the property will evolve – there will likely be many facets

of life and gathering at Cathedral Ridge. But for now, as you plan and dream about visiting this

wonderful place for a vestry retreat, a regional gathering, a diocesan opportunity like the Church

Development Institute or Resort Ministry Conference – or if you and members of your congregation

consider coming down this summer to volunteer as part of the building effort –you now have name to

attach to this place that is ours to share: Cathedral Ridge.

God’s peace and blessing be with you.

Faithfully,

Bishop O’Neill

SAMS Missionary Update Dear Prayer partner,

Thank you for your prayers for travel and time with family! It was a wonderful time

together! My time at the SAMS office was very strengthening and encouraging. My

time with the family helped me reconnect with my sister’s kids and meet some of

their friends important to them. Trying to transition to night owl when I’m a morning gal was tough,

but I’m mostly caught up again! It was a blessing to be able to hug each of them and have some time

to talk with them as well! With Lacey’s graduation, folks were around the house a bit more than a

typical summer Saturday too! Thank you God!

My return to immigration on Thursday resulted in my file being rejected but with some specific things

that need to be done. I am asking the Diocesan office to clarify a couple of those which perhaps will

allow me to be done with all of this side of the effort in a week or two. I pray that Rev. Juan Marquez

is successful at getting the critical information they are seeking to smooth the process a bit.

This week I hope to build my caseload up to a reasonable level. The two days at the clinic last week

were smoother for the scheduler and I, though her ―system‖ still confounds me. Please pray that we

can continue to work well together and that my caseload rises to a good level relatively promptly.

A concert in which Las Chicas Nices were supposed to participate in May was cancelled and this coming

Sunday is the rescheduled date. True to form, we have had no rehearsals so far. The plan is to

rehearse every day this week. Please pray that God guides the song selection, our rehearsals and the

concert!

Please pray for the preparations for supervising the students in August. May God bless and guide you

in all you do!
