SMALL BUSINESS ADVICE Keeping records makes sound business sense. It may seem like a challenge, particularly when you're starting out, but keeping good records will bring real advantages to your business. Keeping good records can save you money:-

by ensuring that you have sufficient cash flow before making purchases by ensuring people who owe you money are paying timeously by helping you avoid paying too much tax and makes filling in your tax return easier help you avoid interest and penalties by making it easier to pay the right tax at the right time help you budget for tax payments help reduce your accountant's fees as this saves them time too can support your claims to some reliefs or capital allowances can make it easier getting a loan

As well as all of the above it will give you valuable information you need to manage your business and help it grow whilst also giving your customers the right impression of your business and how it operates. Be realistic - if you are not able to keep good records then get help to do so. This will allow you to get on with what you do best and ensure that your business does not fail because of lack of good record keeping as this does and has happened to some of the best businesses. The cost of employing someone to keep your records will probably pay for itself from savings as listed above and as these costs can be claimed as a tax relief.

WEEKLY CAR BOOT SALES AT PENICUIK HIGH SCHOOL Penicuik High School and Thyolo High School in Malawi are involved in a student exchange partnership. A small group of pupils from Penicuik have been chosen to represent the School in a trip to Thyolo next June. To make this trip possible each student has to raise the cost of their own fair, over £2000. To help raise this money there will be a weekly Car Boot Sale every Sunday from 10am until 2pm, from 4th July to 26th September inclusive. These will be held in the school grounds by the old library, (enter by Bellman's Road). Spaces cost £5 , with pre-booked spaces getting priority. To book a space please call Robin on 673786 or Kyle on 676883 after 7pm, or just turn up on the day.

BROOMHILL DAYCENTRE We enjoyed an evening concert at the day centre recently raising over £300 towards our amenity fund. We were entertained by the Senior members of the Southern Light Singers who staged the concert on our behalf. Thanks to the Navaar and the Craigiebield Hotels for donating meals to our raffle on the night and to all who supported us again (!) We are enjoying our morning coffee outings to the new Leadburn Inn - there have been two recently and both very much appreciated by our members. Our annual outings will be to the North Queensferry Hotel near Dunfermline and are scheduled for early September. With the community support for our Car Boot and Table Sale and our stall in the Park on the 29th May along with donations from individuals, we have already raised enough money to pay for both outings. These are BIG events for the day centre as it is often the only opportunity in the year for some to 'get away from Penicuik for the day'. Thank you everyone for your continued support. If you can spare a morning to volunteer at the day centre, you would be most welcome. We particularly need passenger assistants/couriers to help the elderly on and off our mini buses. This could be morning or afternoon slot and would involve about an hour to an hour and a half of your time per week. It would be great to have a pool of volunteer drivers as well - so please let me know if you can help in any way. Telephone 678109 or pop in to 7 Bellman's Road, Penicuik. We look forward to hearing from you .

KEEP PENICUIK TIDY I would like to thank the 50 volunteers who turned out on Saturday 19th June for a Community litter pick of the main Street in Penicuik.Willie Reid from MDC Cleansing Department had kindly agreed to cease litter collection along the route for 2 days before the event to highlight just how bad things can get so quickly. Michael Anderson from MDC also provided a team of Community Service Order Clients to assist in transporting the 50 bags of litter that were collected . John Fairlie at Beatson kindly provided us with 100 pairs of protective gloves. John Thompson, the Manager at Tesco Penicuik provided rolls , bacon, tea and coffee for the volunteers and a special thank you to Derek Watters who operates the snack van at Eastfield Farm Road who gave up his Saturday morning to prepare the refreshments. Derek could have gone to Port Seton Gala Day and made money. However, having promised to help out, he was true to his word. So thank you Derek. If the proposed cuts are as bad as they are being made out to be, we in the Community are going to have to work together to try and help make Penicuik a nicer place to live. If anyone is interested in helping out in future events, please get in touch . Chris Leavy, Penicuik 01968677181 [email protected]

UNDERSTANDING FROZEN SHOULDER By Natasha Peachey The term 'Frozen Shoulder' is often used incorrectly to describe shoulder pain. However, anyone who has suffered a true frozen shoulder knows that, as well as pain, the defining symptom is the marked decrease in both active and passive joint movement. This means that neither you nor anyone else can move the shoulder past the restricted range. In health, the shoulder joint has an extensive range of movement, but as it is inherently unstable the joint relies on four muscles, ligaments and a capsule for its stability. It is the capsule that is affected in a 'Frozen Shoulder', and the medical name for the condition is 'Adhesive Capsulitis' - literally a stuck, inflamed capsule. Affecting 2-5% of the population it may be classified as 'primary', where there is no apparent reason for the condition , or 'secondary', for example following surgery or trauma. Unfortunately, once you have the condition symptoms can last for 18-24 months before full recovery. However, generally it is agreed that a frozen shoulder undergoes three stages: 1. Freezing: 1-6 months where the shoulder is often completely unusable 2. Frozen: 6-12 months during which time the inflammation dies down and a person learns to adapt 3. Thawing: 12-24 months the swelling and inflammation subsides and the capsule repairs itself

Risk factors: Usually occurs after the age of 45 - Affects more females (60%) - Intensive or repetitive movements at work or during sport - Type I and 11 diabetics - Trauma or surgery in the shoulder area - If a member of your family has previously had the condition .

Signs and symptoms: Stiffness within the joint - Pain which is often worse in the morning - Usually there are no x-ray findings -Very limited range of movement, which can have a knock on effect to simple tasks such as washing yourself, dressing and driving - It is unusual to get any numbness or pins and needles in the arm.

A frozen shoulder is a bit of a medical enigma and there is no conclusive treatment for it. However, there is often a better recovery if a person presents for treatment within the first 4-6 weeks of symptoms starting. The following are some suggested treatment options: Corticosteroids - can help with temporary pain relief - Acupuncture and manual therapies (such as osteopathy) - can provide pain relieve and also help patients

, ...................... , recover with a better functioning shoulder joint and may also speed up the recovery time -Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) - can help alleviate pain

-An injection to block a nerve - again can help with pain relief -Surgical procedures - although there is no

! conclusive evidence on the benefits of these techniques and obviously, as with any surgery, carry the risk of complications Whatever the treatment used the patient is responsible for approximately 50% of any improvement as a frozen shoulder needs active, as well as passive, treatment. Therefore, it is

I imperative for a patient to undertake regular i stretching exercises and use the shoulder as

much as possible to speed up recovery.

To summarise a frozen shoulder is stiff and painful that cannot be move either by you or someone else. It can affect either one or both shoulders simultaneously, it will last for several months and treatment can help relieve the pain, gradually improve the range of movement and ensure the shoulder heals correctly.

CUI KEN WRAPAROUND Some of you may be aware that the Council have refused to keep the wraparound open, despite our valiant efforts to save it. Whilst this is disappointing, it is not the end of the road. We have been in discussions with the YMCA in Penicuik, who are currently working out costs in setting up a childcare facility in Cuiken School , offering a similar set up to the Wraparound . There is currently a concerted effort in looking into the care commission license, grant funding etc. and we are hoping to be in a position in a few weeks where we will know whether the YM can offer a service. If they do offer a service, it could open up the wraparound service to the whole of Penicuik, for people attending any Council Nursery - this would be a great boost to Penicuik, and allow for more choice for working parents. Spread the word to all you know who have children of a nursery age that this sort of service could be

PENICUIK HARRIERS - PEEBLES BELTANE 10K The club was represented by 9 athletes for this race with it being a fantastic day blue skies lots of sunshine it was rather warm but there was welcome breeze to aid the runners keeping them cool. The Beltane 1 Ok up until this year was a road race but Health and Safety won the day forcing the race from road to trail with no traffic in sight a beautiful run following stretches of the Tweed passing through shady green woodland with only one truly arduous section around the 4k with a short steep hill but from then on all downhill and level most of the way to the finishing line with 105 finishers. Duncan Ball 8th 40-58. Gordon Campbell 38th 49-07, Chris Burns 52-56, Rachael Campbell 55-27, Kirsty Loudon 1-00-02, Gilly Marshall 1-00-39, Janice Smith(HBT) 1-00-39,Alia Haskouri 1-01-12, and Nadia Haskouri1-01 -19; The Ladies lifted the team prize made up by Rachael, Kirsty and Gilly.

PENICUIK ATHLETIC The football season may have finished , but the work behind the scenes certainly has not. Managers Craig Meikle and Brian Ryrie have been exceptionally busy re-signing players and searching for new additions to the squad for next season. Craig stated that the process is well advanced with eleven players from last year signed, two new additions and negotiations progressing with four other experienced junior football players. He and Brian are looking to operate with an eighteen player squad for the next season with a couple of additions to the backroom staff. Friendlies have been arranged between, Dundee United, Hearts and Lothian Thistle. Full details will be announced on the Club website www.penicuikatletic.co.uk

MIDLOTHIAN HIGH SCHOOLS ACTIVE SCHOOLS "Following postponement on 31/3/10 due to snow!!! The rearranged Midlothian High Schools Active Schools Trophy went ahead after Easter, on 21/4/10 . The tournament proved every bit as competitive as expected, following a season in which every Midlothian high school has won a festival , and this provided a fitting finale to what has been a fantastic HS hockey season in Midlothian. Unfortunately Dalkeith could not make the final tournament of the season, but thanks to all the players who volunteered for the ALL STARS team, which still allowed us a 5 team event. Big thanks must go to Lorraine Nicholson-Bennet for organising the tournament at short notice and coaching 2 of the high school teams!

Final Points Table Team Pld W D L Gf Ga Pts Penicuik 4 3 1 0 1 3 11 Newbattle 4 2 2 0 7 3 10 Lasswade 4 2 1 1 6 3 9 Beeslack 4 1 0 3 10 8 6 All Stars 4 0 0 4 0 19 4

There were a number of awards presented to players at the end of the tournamenl:Player of the Year James Paterson (Beeslack), David Mclntosh (Lasswade), Paul Taylor (Newbattle), Craig Murray (Penicuik) Most improved Player, Dean Whitson (Beeslack),Chloe Thomson (Lasswade), Kyle Taylor (Newbattle), Dylin Lynch (Penicuik). Youth Umpire "C" badge development, Kerri Allan (Lasswade), Chris Maclnnes (Newbattle), Aedan McCrossan (Penicuik). Young Coach of the Year lain Chisholm (Penicuik)

This has been our most successful season yet, at high school level. The Midlothian Potential Squad was also very well attended (up to 50 players) during FEB-MAR, despite the poor weather at times! enabling both an U16 squad and an U12 squad to be coached for the first time.
