IMPORTANCE OF HABITS

Habits are the automatic behaviors that we all do. They are the things that we perform without giving enough thought and consideration as if we are working on auto-pilot. It may include healthy and productive routines, like constantly reading a book every night and performing exercise every morning. Some people, on the other hand, may develop negative habits, like constantly smoking 1 pack a day and excessive watching of Netfilx. Both of these habits can either make a person’s life a success or miserable. If you want to be successful just like those at the top 1%, you need to deliberately destroy your negative habits and replace it with more productive ones.

On average, a person can develop new habits after 66 days—far more than the common knowledge, which says that it takes about 21 days for them to form. James Clear, the author of the best-selling book Atomic Habits, believes that developing good and productive habits is highly achievable. By just following several tips from his book, anyone can change their lives dramatically.

If you want to develop the habit of going to the gym every morning, put your gym bag on your front door so you will be able to see it every time you’ll leave. Make these clues visible to your eyes so you will be constantly reminded. Instead of aiming to be a famous bodybuilder, focus on becoming

FOCUS ON THE SYSTEM, NOT THE GOALIf you plan to be a world-class bodybuilder, for example, you need to focus on going to the gym every day instead of constantly thinking of being a bodybuilder. Looking at the final goal can sometimes be overwhelming, and it also doesn’t produce results. On the other hand, when you focus on going to the gym regularly, you produce visible and tangible results that get you closer to your final goal.

James Clear noted that he once connected his treadmill at home so he could watch the television while he runs. So if he wanted to watch television longer, he needed to run in the treadmill just as long. Find a task that is most rewarding to you, and then use it as a reward after you have successfully completed a task that you want to develop into a habit.

As we often hear, what gets measured, gets managed. And that is true. If you prefer to do things the traditional way, you can use a calendar or planner, and then mark them every time you successfully finish a task. If, on the other hand, you prefer to do things through your phone, you can use habit tracker apps, like Habit Tracker, Loop Habit Tracker, and HabitHub.

When you fail to perform a task today, make sure to get back again tomorrow. We all have that tendency to skip once in a while, sometimes due to understandable reasons, like sickness and emergencies. But sometimes it is just due to our laziness. But that’s okay; that’s perfectly normal. Just make sure that after you miss a day, get back on track the next day.

If you want to eat healthier, make sure to not stock junk food at home and in the office. So if you feel like eating them, you’ll need to make extra effort to go to the grocery store. As a result, you are less likely to eat it.

Being a morning person has a lot of benefits. That’s why successful leaders, like Richard Branson, Tim Cook, and Jack Dorsey, make sure that they wake up earlier than usual to make enough time to enhance their body and mind. During mornings, the surroundings are quiet and peaceful, thus allowing you to concentrate fully on the book that you are reading. You can process information more effectively compared to the other times of the day. Also, mornings are free from usual responsibilities, like work, family, or business. It makes you feel calmer and allows you to focus on your personal growth. Finally, by waking up earlier, you can be more productive. You can do more things and finish early, giving you more time in the afternoon to spend time with your family, and read a couple of pages. Taking this one hour for yourself every morning is a true game changer!

EMBRACE THE 20-20-20 FORMULA.

This formula stands for the first 60 minutes of your day, equally divided into three compartments. The first 20 minutes of your day should be devoted to reflection, followed by exercise, and finally, study. The first hour of your day is the most critical hour in your daily work because it sets the atmosphere of how your day is going to unfold. If you follow this rule religiously, you can shift from being reactive to being pro-active. You become more deliberate in performing the tasks that you need to do. As a result, you become highly productive and a super achiever. To start your day like most successful people do, start becoming a morning person today!

S T E P 1

Reflection (5:00 –5:20 AM) The First 20 minutes of your Holy Hour

As you can observe, your day starts at 5:00 in the morning. However, if waking up at 5 AM is too early for you wake up at 6:00 or 7:00. This formula is modeled from the book The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma. He formulated the 20-20-20 formula, which he called the victory hour because it allowed his clients to maximized their productivity and allowed them to succeed more. During the first 20 minutes of your day, you should reflect on your priorities for the day through your journal. After that, make sure to reflect on your goals by looking at your vision board. If you don’t have one yet, you can simply cut pictures of the things that inspire you, like a new house, a happy family, and a successful business. Paste them on board, and make sure to place it on your wall.

The following Journaling and Meditation steps will allow you to take the most out of your first 20 minutes.

In this step, make sure to be specific as much as possible. In your journal, list the 5 most essential visions that you see for yourself. It can be your vision for yourself, family, business, community, or for the world. After that, list your 5 most important values. It can be something like hard work, excellence, etc. Be honest about yourself when writing your values.

01 ORGANIZE YOUR THINKING

Think of the first time you were able to sell your product. Perhaps you can still remember the first time you and your spouse went on a date. Things like these allow you to be happier, thus making you more energetic to do the things that you need to do for the day.

03 REVISIT YOUR MOST PLEASANT EXPERIENCES

7 STEPS TO EFFECTIVE JOURNALING

Think of gratitude as a muscle. The more you practice it, the stronger it becomes. When you are grateful for the things in your life, even the simples ones, you become much happier, and it also improves your overall well-being. Successful people are happy people. Every morning, you can list the top 5 things that you are grateful about in your life. It can be about your loving spouse, a comfortable home, and even for your cup of coffee in the morning.

04 PRACTICE DELIBERATE GRATITUDE

If there was a time where your colleague tried to push you to your limits, think of it as something that improved your patience and understanding. Instead of fighting back, you can think of that scenario as a way to improve your emotional intelligence. It releases your anger and heavy feelings, and as a result, you allow yourself to function better and more effectively.

05 SEE CHALLENGES IN A POSITIVE WAY

Every time you learn something from a book, online classes, and seminars, make sure to write it down on your journal or notebook. This helps you to retain the knowledge longer and therefore helping you remember it when situations require that information. More importantly, when you want to go back and review the lessons that you’ve learned, you can easily browse through the pages and relearn the essential information.

06 MAXIMIZE YOUR LEARNING

Allow your journal to record all the fantastic things that happen in your life. It doesn’t matter whether it is big or small. If it makes you smile, write it. If it makes you feel better about yourself, write it. If you write these things in your journal, you can look back at it when you grow older and remember the good old days.

07 RECORD YOUR REMARKABLE MOMENTS

For example, if one of your visions is for your business, think of the things that you want for your business 3 or 5 years from now. It can be something like “be the top supplier of manufacturing equipment for Company ABC.” And then do the same thing for your other visions.

MEDITATION AND MINDFULNESS EXERCISE

There are countless studies out there that prove the benefits of meditation. Some of its primary benefits are increased focus, calmer state of mind, and decreased anxiety and depression. PHASE 1: LOVE AND COMPASSION (1-2 minutes)

This phase focuses on increasing your love and compassion for yourself and the people around you. Perhaps you are disconnected from some of your closest friends, family, and neighbors, which causes you to feel sad and distracted. When you try to feel your love for these people, your view of yourself and the people around you will start to change. When you are in sync with yourself and with others, you can easily achieve your goals without friction.

PHASE 2: GRATITUDE (2 minutes)

As mentioned previously, gratitude is like a muscle that grows every time you practice. When you are grateful to things in your life, you are likely to attract more of it. Think of the things that you are thankful for and thank the world for blessing you with these things.

PHASE 3: FORGIVENESS (2 minutes)

Let go of the grudges that you feel for your family, friends, business partners, and all the people that wronged and (have) hurt you. The feeling of revenge is not only dangerous for your enemy but also for your health and overall performance. Try to let go of the negative emotions that you hold towards others. If will help you to feel better about yourself and feel more positive about your future.

PHASE 4: FUTURE DREAMING (2 minutes)What do you want for yourself a year from now? Three years? Five years? When you look forward to your goals, you make yourself excited and more motivated. It also helps you consider the possible actions that you can take to make these things a reality. More importantly, your dreams make you feel alive. They are the ones that keep you going.

PHASE 5: PERFECT DAY (2 minutes)What does the perfect day look like to you? Imagine your day as if it is already unfolding from morning up to the afternoon. Imagine that you are doing the things that bring you close to your goals. When you imagine the day as if it is really happening, you prepare yourself mentally from the day’s work, and therefore, helping you to perform the tasks better.

PHASE 6: THE BLESSING (2 minutes)You have already done your part with the previous 5 steps. At this stage, you now ask the power of God or the universe to help you achieve the things that you set for yourself. This is the last phase of your meditation. You can now move on to the next part of your morning – working out.

Exercise (5:20-5:40 AM) The second 20 minutes of your Holy Hour

The next 20 minutes of your day should be allotted to working out. For this part, you can do high-intensity interval training (HIIT). It is composed of intense exercises with little low recovery time. Countless studies confirm the health benefits of having HIIT every day, like the ability to lose fat, gain muscle, improve oxygen consumption, and improve blood pressure. It can also decrease your blood sugar level, increase metabolic rate, and burn more calories in a shorter period. There are numerous apps out there for both iOS and Android. Some of them are:

Study (5:40-6:00 AM) The final 20 minutes of your Holy Hour

Finally, the final 20 minutes of your day should be devoted to studying. Are there skills that can help you achieve your goals? Maybe you want to learn public speaking, computer coding, or writing. Use this final 20 minutes of the victory hour to make yourself better each day. You can buy a book, enroll in an online course, or watch a TEDx video. Just like money, the knowledge that you learn each day will grow exponentially, and the result will be significant after some time.

Studies have shown that people who are well-hydrated score higher on brain tests. Fortunately, you can also

improve your brain power by easily blending water, avocado, green leafy vegetables, blueberries, and

coconut oil. If you do not have the time to make this, you can still get the nutrients that you need by taking a

complete nutrition meal like HUEL.

In your journal or in a small piece of paper, write down a message that you want to say to yourself before you start working. It can be a

short message that reminds you of your values or just something that inspires you. Make it an inspiring message that sets your mood for the

day and something you read every morning.

If you are having a hard time with your finances, perhaps you say certain things, like “Why am I

so broke? And why is it that I don’t have enough money to pay my bills?” According to Christie Marie Sheldon, these types of questions block

all the possibilities in your life. It brings you more of negative things instead of positive

ones. To have a more successful life, you can shift from asking these low-vibration questions

to lofty ones. Lofty questions are those that are positive, motivating, and empowering, like “Why do I have so much money in my bank?

Why are the customers continually paying me fast?” When you say these things, the universe

conspires and make it a reality. And more importantly, it makes you feel more positive,

allowing you to perform better at work.

I have post-its on my fridge and every day before I open my fridge I write down a lofty question. Try this for 30 days and experience the great results!

For the next 90 days, after your victory hour, allocate your next 90 minutes to your single (1) most important task. It can be about the business that gives you the most revenue, or maybe a problem in your organization that needs an immediate solution. At this time of your day, you are less distracted and still have a lot of mental energy. If you use this for the most pressing task in your life, you are more likely to get better results.

If you are focusing intensely on a task, there will come a time that your productivity will start to diminish. If you want to get the most out of your time without draining yourself, focus straightly for 60 minutes and then take 10 minutes rest (Pomodoro) to refresh your mind. For this short break, you can have a walk or grab a snack. You can also think of other rewards for yourself, so you can motivate yourself to work harder. For the next 30 days, do one thing every day that you have been procrastinating for quite a while already. The primary purpose of this challenge is to train your mind not to delay things. It trains your mind and body to be more disciplined, which is highly vital if you want to succeed. You can also use your journal in this exercise to monitor your progress.

TURN OFF NOTIFICATIONS

Every time that a notification pops up from your phone, you are likely to browse through your phone for a couple of

minutes, and lose your focus at the task that you are doing. To be more productive, make sure to turn off notifications from all apps you are using.

PUT YOUR PHONE INTO SILENT MODE

When you are working, especially on your most important tasks, a friend or a family might call you for trivial things, like reminding

you to bring pizza for dinner, inviting you to a party for the weekend, and others. These

things can be discussed during break time and after working

hours. Make sure to know your priorities. If they really need you they will call you twice and this breaks the Silent Mode on your

phone. So no worries!

STOP BEING BUSY BEING BUSY

To avoid being busy for the sake of being busy, plan your day ahead the night before or every morning. This helps you to be focused and productive and keeps you from jumping

from one task to another.

VIEW EMAIL TWICE A DAY ONLY

When you wake up, perhaps the first thing that you check is your email. And then you will

recheck it once you sit on your cubicle, during lunch, and so

on. This takes so much of your time. To be more efficient, be satisfied to check your emails twice only. It can be every 1:00

PM and at 3:00 PM.

Practice “Wouldn’t it be nice if….” Statements

Every morning, before you start your day, ask yourself things, like, “Wouldn’t it be nice if I try calling that prospective client? You can also ask, “Wouldn’t it be nice if this desire would come to me? Wouldn’t it be nice if I would be feeling more energetic today?” These questions create possibilities in your life. It helps you consider things that could potentially improve your life. While you reflect every morning, ask yourself at least 3 of these questions.

Move to the Culture Hacker

When you are at this stage, you become fully committed to your goals. You take things very seriously, and you do everything to make your dreams a reality. At this phase, creative visualization will be beneficial to you. In creative visualization, you visualize your goals as if it is already happening. There are just two reminders that you need to remember when doing creative visualization:

• Do not be attached to the final goal. When you visualize your dreams, focus on the feelings that it creates instead of the material things. This will help you to be more motivated and dedicated.

• Put yourself in a positive state of expectancy. Convince yourself that things will truly become a reality, and you just need some time for that to happen. Embrace the feeling and expect your dreams to happen.

ON HAPPINESS

Life is full of things that you cannot control—car breaking down, passing of loved ones, and canceled transactions. The world is just so unpredictable, and if you let the outside world control your emotions, you will never be truly happy and satisfied. And to be genuinely happy, Dana Saviuc noted that we need to let go of these 15 things:

Give up your need for control. Give up your

resistance to change.

Give up labels.

Give up your self-defeating

self-talk.

Give up your need to impress

others.

Give up complaining.

Give up the luxury of criticism.

Give up on blame.

Give up your excuses.

Give up your need to always

be right.

Give up on your fears.

Give up your limiting beliefs about what you can or cannot do about what is possible or impossible.

Give up the past.

FIVE (5) MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VICTIMS AND LEADERS

Victims are already satisfied with their current skills and knowledge. They don’t seek for growth or leaving the comfort zone. Instead they are focussing on maintaining all they have (job, lifestyle, etc.). In contrast, leaders have an unquenchable thirst for learning. They feel that if they don’t improve quickly, they could possibly miss something and lose to their competitions. Through consistent learning, they bring themselves and their organizations at the top of their industries.

Victims do not value mentorships as much as the leaders do. Aside from already being satisfied with their status, they feel that mentors won’t bring considerable improvements to their careers and relationships. In contrast, leaders value mentorship a lot. They believe that with the years of experience of their mentors, they can improve their learning curves, which will allow them to succeed more.

As they say, you are the average of the 5 people you spend most of your time with. And that is true. If you choose friends who see themselves as victims, you are more likely to be influenced by them. But if you carefully select your friends, and choose only the motivated and the gritty ones, you will be able to improve your habits and mindset. This will help you to succeed more in the long run. Are you spending the most of your time with complainers or game changers?

When victims are faced with problems, they see themselves as someone who needs help. They rarely exert their own efforts to lift themselves up and get back up again. In contrast, leaders see these setbacks as opportunities to be smarter and stronger. They believe that failures expose their weaknesses. And when they become aware of their weaknesses, they can act accordingly and make sure that they won’t fall again for the same mistakes.

Victims envy their friends who are succeeding. They always find faults and reasons to bring their friends and colleagues down to their level. They take the success of others as a blow to their egos. Leaders, on the other hand, support each other and realize that they can accomplish more by helping and supporting each other, instead of undermining each other. True leaders see the success of others as an inspiration to set bigger goals.
