Telemedicine - Finally Ready for “Primetime”? Telemedicine today encompasses many specialties and can no longer be viewed as science fiction. Noteworthy among these applications are teleradiology and telecardiology, which experience an annual growth rate of approximately 30%. Although the practice of comprehensive offsite treatment through telemedicine is not yet a reality, it is increasingly possible for a patient to receive an accurate diagnosis without the physical presence of a specialist. At a time when healthcare spending is under continuous scrutiny, the opportunities for efficiency and savings that exist in this emerging field are fueling growing enthusiasm for telemedicine. We first discussed the implications of telemedicine in the Fall 2004 Minute, (Volume 4, Issue 4). In this current edition of the Minute, we will provide an update on the evolution of telemedicine as it is being applied to current medical treatment and explore what may lie on the horizon in this exciting area of medicine.
