The Land of 10,000 Lakes; The Land of the Mall of America; The Land of the birth place of Prince and The
Land where superstar Kevin Garnett use to call home…YES, here in Minnesota is where 400-500
members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority will gather for the 75th
Annual Great Lakes Regional Conference.
April 16th
-19th
, 2009 will be home to the women of the Finer womanhood from all across the Great Lake
Regions, the states include: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and of course the
Great State of Minnesota. “This is an exciting opportunity and definitely would give a huge boost to our
visibility. It also has the potential to boost our membership,” says Iota Zeta Zeta Chapter member Charmaine Harris.
Royal Blue and Pure White will overflow in Minnesota as the women will participate in a number of business sessions, workshops
and social activities to help make their sisterhood stronger. The conference will take place at the Holiday Inn Select in
Bloomington, MN. With this location, visitors will have access to the Mall of America and to the light rail, where they will be able
to visit beautiful, downtown Minneapolis.
In preparation, the MN State Director; Fannie Harrell has decided to put together a Regional Conference Planning Committee
which consists of representatives from both the Minneapolis and Roseville Graduate chapters along with committee members
from Kappa Pi-the undergraduate chapter in MN. Six months may seem like a long time away – but the committee is already
hard at work hoping to make this milestone conference one to remember for a long to come. This is the
first Regional Conference to be held in the state of Minnesota and all three chapters are looking to make
their stamp! They are also seeking support from Wisconsin Sorors and the members of Phi Beta Sigma in
the state of Minnesota.
More information regarding this monumental conference will come in the next issue of the Minnesota
Dove Connection - for more information on getting involved with Zeta Phi Beta’s 2009 Regional
Conference – please send an email to [email protected]

“It gives people a good excuse to get suited and booted”
-Brother Martin
- ZNS
On January 9th
, 1914 a new era in Greek Life begin. The vision of three men came to be what we know
as Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Since the inception the organization has raised the status quo of
black Greek lettered organizations and help to found the sisterhood of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. So
what are the brothers doing 95 years later on the day they were founded? On January 10th
, 2009 the
celebration will come to fruition in a formal event to pay homage to the Blue and White Founders. “I
believe that the idea of this event is to celebrate both of our organizations,” comments Brother
Charles Martin of the Zeta Nu Sigma chapter. “The fraternity and sorority have had an impact on so
many people’s lives that it makes since to celebrate our founder’s great accomplishments.”
In addition to this event being the first blue and white activity of the calendar year, it will also give guests an opportunity to get
dressed up, as it is a formal affair. While this is an event that celebrates the Founders of Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta, it will
be open to all Divine Nine Greeks, along with local business and community members. According to Brother Martin, “This event
is important because it symbolizes unity among the organizations,” He also adds, “It gives people a good excuse to get suited and
booted!” Brother Martin concludes, “I feel that this event is fun and refreshing and it allows us to catch up with all of our
beloved members of our fraternity”.
This illustrious event is set to take place on Saturday, January 10th
at the Best Western Kelly Inn in St. Paul, MN. For more
information on this event please email: [email protected] or send inquiries to

Zeta Phi Beta Minnesota State Meeting Zeta Phi Beta sorority held their Annual Minnesota State Meeting at the Radisson Hotel in Roseville, MN on Saturday, October
18th
. This was an opportunity for all three chapters in the state to get together and discuss issues and topics related the Zeta Phi
Beta on a State, Regional and National Level. Representatives from Iota Zeta Zeta, Sigma Beta Zeta and Kappa Pi were all in
attendance as Soror Theola Carter from the Nu Iota Zeta chapter in WI, gave a Parliamentary Procedures workshop.
A new officer was also installed – as Bernadette was elected to be the new MN State Representative for the Great Lakes Region.
According to Soror Charmaine Harris, IZZ Chapter member and State Secretary, “This event was important because it gave the
attendees the opportunity to learn about parliamentary procedures/Robert's Rules of Order/appropriate meeting conduct and
etiquette on all levels (chapter, state, regional, national).” Soror Harris concluded, “This event gave the attendees the
opportunity to fellowship with one another and to actively work on the meeting's theme ‘A Greater Commitment to Our
Founding Principles’.” The State Meeting is held annually in October.
Kappa Pi on a Roll - Soror Melva Landrum
Kappa Pi is back on the Yard in
Minnesota. The Twin Cities
Undergraduate chapter was re-chartered in 2007; 10 years after
their inception at the University of Minnesota in 1997. Currently they
are standing strong with a solid membership and an abundance of
interests from ladies at several Twin
City colleges and Universities.
Kappa Pi started the 2008 – 2009
school year off strong by hosting and
attending events. They started the year off by attending the
Multicultural Center of Academic Excellence (MCAE) event, where they
passed out flyers about their organization and upcoming activities.
Kappa Pi also had the opportunity to
give a brief description and introduction about their chapter to
new and incoming Students of color at the U of M’s Black Student Union
Kick-off event.
The Kappa Pi chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc has stayed busy by
supporting all of the Greek Lettered
Organizations and by holding a few of their own, including the First
Annual Zeta Skate Night, which took place in September at the Roller
Gardens. They have also hosted a
Zeta information, a Zeta Social and plan on conducting intake this fall.
Kappa Pi, is just getting started as
they will be making their step show debut – as the only sorority to
perform in the University of
Minnesota’s ‘Stomp the Yard’ show in November, they raising the standard
on all undergraduate sororities in the state.

2008200820082008
MN - Tiaras, formal wear, and talent
competitions are what the contestants of Little
Miss Zeta have to look forward to on Saturday,
November 22nd
. Iota Zeta Zeta will be hosting
their first annual Little Miss Zeta Contest for
young girls, ages 7-12 years old. There are five
young ladies who are participating in Little Miss
Zeta 2008 and they have a full calendar of
events to keep them busy in preparation and
once one of them is crowned.
The Little Miss Zeta Contest will provide a forum for girls ages
7-12 to experience a contest encouraging personal growth,
leadership development, confidence and inner-beauty. The
Iota Zeta Zeta Chapter will create a platform for young girls to
display their unique characters in a setting that will bring forth
support from their families, friends, the community and from
the women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc who will serve as
mentors for them throughout the process.
The contestants will participate in a fundraiser by encouraging
family and friends to sponsor advertisements wishing them
well in the contest. In addition to the fundraising portion of
the program, the Zetas hosted a Parent’s Appreciation Bruch
that included Guest Speaker; Mrs. Zulu who is a successful
story teller. The Young Ladies will also
participate in the Zeta Charm School Clinic,
which consisted of workshops on dinner

As far as having Sigmas on the
campus, this could create a more competitive platform for the
fraternities to compete – to become known as the chapter running the
yard. “I hope to leave a legacy in
which will be recorded in history. As a young black male I feel honored
because Pi Eta was once the "Most Improved" chapter of the Great Lake
Region and was given "Chapter of the Year", so getting the chapter
back to where it was will be an
accomplishment,” Comments Demario. “I feel that having Phi Beta
Sigma on the U of M campus would make a change on the campus as
well as in the community. In
following our motto, "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity",
we will NEVER forget about the community. Having Phi Beta Sigma
on the U of M campus makes the campus a better place!”

““““INTRODUCING PI ETA…INTRODUCING PI ETA…INTRODUCING PI ETA…INTRODUCING PI ETA…” ” ” ” ---- Soror Melva Landrum
There is a new fraternity on the main
U of M Campus and that fraternity is ready to own the yard. Pi Eta is now
making waves to become a force to reckon with as far as undergraduate
fraternities are concerned in
Minneapolis. Demario Littleton, a senior at the U of M majoring in
Computer Science with a minor in Statistics is taking lead as the solo
member of the Pi Eta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Even
though Demario is the only current
member (at the time of this article), he isn’t fazed by the amount of work
it takes to get a chapter started. “As an up and coming chapter, the first
goal is to establish the chapter on
campus, so that the whole university is aware of Pi Eta,” says Demario.
“But the main goal of the chapter is be ‘a part of’ the community rather
than ‘apart from’ the community. In doing so, the chapter will be positive
role models in the community to
young men to help the growth and development of our future leaders”.
So far, Demario has been one busy Sigma making a name for the
organization at various events; Demario comments that “Pi Eta
has participated and hosted many
events [including]-Sigmas Spades Tournament; Sigmas Social Night
[and the] Multicultural Center of Academic Excellence Kickoff,
[which was] was an event for incoming minority freshman to get
a feel of campus life and different
student organizations. Pi Eta was able to attend the event and
distribute care packages of school supplies and information about Phi
Beta Sigma”.
