President’s MessageA persistent critic of the regional Emmy awards would
always tell me how meaningless they were because entries were only being judged by “six people eating pizza.” It’s actually a pretty accurate description of something that might also be called “a panel of professional peers taking time out of their busy day.” Over the years, this peer judging process has worked consistently well when done right (quali-fi ed judges from different stations, no discussion or collusion).Still, there are always surprises, and there is always roomfor improvement. This past year, our Awards Committee held meetings with members in St. Louis, Kansas City and Carbondale, Illinois. These discussions led to some category changes and clarifi cations, and we want to have more of these discussions in more cities this coming year. It took awhile, but this chapter is looking and acting like a regional organization. Although we dropped “St. Louis” from the chapter name a few years ago, we have only recently had a truly regional board with active members and offi cers from markets throughout Missouri, Arkansas and southern Illinois. There is greater input, more voices, and more ideas about making this organiza-tion more than just the Emmy Awards. Congratulations to all of tonight’s nominees. And thanks to all who have helped make regional awards possible all over the country by judging. The pizza’s on us.

Jeff Benscoter Jeff Benscoter is currently News Director at KY3 TV, the NBC affiliate in Springfield, Missouri. He has held that position for the past seven years. A graduate of the University of Missouri, Jeff first worked at WKYT-TV in Lexington, KY and then at WKRC-TV in Cincinatti. In 2007, KY3 News was awarded four Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including Overall Excellence, Investigative Reporting, Continuing Coverage, and Spot News for “Tornado Outbreak”. KY3 was also honored with ten Missouri Broadcasters Awards including Best Newscast, Weather, and Spot News.
Presenters (continued) Jeff says his most memorable news coverage events include the 2003 Ozarks tornado outbreak in which two separate twisters leveled several southwestern Missouri towns. KY3 was on the air continuously for hours, and spent months following up on the damage, personal stories of loss, and investigating who was getting FEMA relief and who was not receiving the funds. This year’s most memorable event was a massive ice storm which left more than 100,000 people without power for up to two weeks in freezing temperatures. KY3 fought through tremendous weather-related technical issues to provide days of continuous coverage which helped victims find shelter, food, and fuel. The task was extremely tough since the majority of the news staff was still at work even though they and their families were also without electricity. As a member of the Junior League of Springfield Advisory Board, he and KY3 provided key coverage and support for a local crisis nursery, an ambitious project aimed at helping cut one of the areas biggest problems, child abuse. He also serves as an alumni member for Leadership Springfield.
Angie Weidinger Angie Weidinger co-anchors KSFX News at 9 p.m. and reports for the nightly KOLR newscasts. She also started a franchise called Eye on the Ozarks which she uses to tell in-depth, investigative stories on both stations. Several of her past reports caught the attention of the governor and other state or local leaders to affect positive changes for those in her community. Angie joined KSFX/KOLR in June 2002. She serves on several community and professional organization boards including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Reading Roundup (a group that works to provide updated books in school libraries) and the Southwest Missouri Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2006, Angie won her first Mid-America regional Emmy for “Specialty News Series.” She is nominated again this year in the “Education/Schools” category. Angie is a mid-Missouri native and graduate of the University of Missouri Journalism School. No matter what Missouri television station she’s worked for over the past eight
years, her parents have always found a way to adjust the home antenna in Vienna, Missouri to watch her stories. In her spare time, Angie enjoys training for marathons, watching live theatre and traveling.
Heather Crawford Heather Crawford is Channel 7’s Live at Five Anchor. She joined the KATV news team in December 2006. Heather moved to the Natural State from just across the border in Tennessee where she was an investigative reporter and fill-in anchor at FOX 13 in Memphis. Prior to that she was a reporter/anchor at WLFL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina. Heather began her journalism career as a reporter at WAKA-TV in Montgomery, Alabama. Heather is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of North Carolina State University where she double majored in Mass Communication and Spanish. During college she spent a semester abroad in Seville, Spain and speaks Spanish fluently. Heather has always loved the news and knew from a young age she wanted to be a journalist. She digs deep to find the truth and keep the public informed. Heather is the proud recipient of a national MADD award for shining the spotlight on a repeat drunk driver in Arkansas and the national Neighborhoods, USA award for helping improve her community. Heather is thrilled to live and work in Arkansas. She was born in Memphis and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, but as a child she spent many vacations at her relatives’ home in Hot Springs. She also has family in Prescott. Heather’s favorite thing about the Natural State is the incredibly friendly and outgoing people. When Heather isn’t on the anchor desk or working on a story you can find her spending time with her husband and staying involved in her community.

Ray Hoff stetter Ray Hoff stetter began working
at what was known as KSD-TV in
1948, just a year after the station
went into operation. A stagehand
then, Ray recalls the heydays of
television when all shows and
commercials were live. He worked
on shows such as Charlotte Peters,
Laclede Little Symphony, Corky the
Clown and Home Making with Wilma
Sims.
As live shows became a thing of
the past, Ray transferred to the then
expanding news department where
he worked fi rst as a soundman and
then a cameraman, covering local
news and traveling to record major
world events on fi lm, including the
return of the USS Pueblo crew in San
Diego. A local story that stands out in Ray’s memory is the nudist convention he and John Auble
covered in St. Louis County.
Ray worked as video cameraman and editor from 1976 until he retired in 1992. During that
time he also covered special events and promotions. He covered stories while in a WWII B-17 from
Minneapolis to St. Louis and on the ground in Operation Desert Shield with Dick Ford in 1990. The
career highlight of this former Navy man who served in both WWII and the Korean War, occurred in
1991. Ray was part of the fi nal voyage of the battleship USS Missouri. He sailed on it to Hawaii while
covering the 50th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
He offi cially retired from KSDK in 1992, but Ray continues to work, part time, along with his
friend Bob Garger, in the KSDK archives, sorting, cataloguing and creating a comprehensive fi lm
library. A member of the St. Louis Civil War Round Table for 45 years, Ray is also an OASIS tutor,
and a volunteer at the Sappington Historic House and Museum. He and his wife Muriel have been
married for 57 wonderful years.
Russel Kinsaul Russell Kinsaul joined the News 4 team in September 2004 as a weekday reporter and anchor for News 4 weeknights at 6 p.m. Since coming to St. Louis, Russell has reported on everything from fi res to fl oods, piracy to protests and assault weapons to war heroes. A recent memorable moment in Russell’s career was in the fall of 2004 when he fl ew over Cuba and through Hurricane Ivan, onboard a military plane. Russell came back from his bumpy, dangerous fl ight with a 2-part report that aired onNews 4, telling the inside story on the eff ort to measure and track dangerous hurricanes. Russell has strong Midwestern roots, coming to KMOV with more than 10 years experience at CBS-affi liate KCTV in Kansas City. He was most recently a co-anchor of KCTV’s 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts. Previously, Russell worked as a morning anchor at KJRH-TV in Tulsa, Okla.; as an evening news anchor at KPLC-TV in Lake Charles, La.; and as a weekend news anchor/reporter in Lawton, Okla. Russell participated in projects for Ronald McDonald House, CASA and Variety and over the years has been a regular
volunteer for the United Way and organizations that work to prevent child abuse. Russell and his wife Melinda are the proud parents of two, a daughter and a son- who are big St. Louis Cardinal baseball fans. The Kinsauls reside in West St. Louis County.
Ruth Ezell Ruth Ezell joined St. Louis’ KETC Channel 9 in 2003 as a producer for the Emmy Award-winning feature magazine show Living St. Louis. She worked previously as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor at the market’s NBC affi liate, KSDK-TV for 10 years. On Saturday mornings, she serves as co-host of Total Information AM on radio station KMOX. Ezell has broad and extensive experience in news media: she went from being a production assistant, to a radio news reporter for one of the fi rst all-talk format radio stations in the country, and then to news writing and producing for television. Her fi rst love is reporting, and she utilizes this talent on Living St. Louis in addition to her ongoing duties at KMOX. Ezell won two awards from the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists, two Aurora Awards and four Mid-America Emmy Awards. Her career has taken her from Detroit to Cincinnati and Chicago, and then to St. Louis, which she now proudly calls home. Ezell is a native of Michigan and studied theater arts at Olivet College.

Bob Garger News Writer Bob Garger’s fi rst
job after graduating from SLU was
with UPI, covering Gussie Busch’s
purchase of the Cardinals and the local
conviction of an IRS offi cial. KSD-
Radio-TV was next on his resume. He
joined their staff in 1954 and was the
fi rst reporter on the scene of the 1957
evacuation of the Frisco RR building,
as well as the disastrous 1959 tornado
that killed 21 in St. Louis.
In the early 1960’s, when the news
operations were still exclusively male,
Bob wrote the 15-minute newscasts
that aired on television at 5PM, 6PM
and the 10-minute cast at 10PM. Those
were the days when the national
stories came by way of Parcel Post
from either NY, LA or Chicago. Life was
a little slower. Bob fondly recalls the stories that ignited passion and pride in St. Louisans –those
momentous events like the Cardinals winning the championship and the day the completed ARCH
majestically graced the banks of the Mississippi.
In addition to news writing, Bob also produced series and documentaries for KSDK, working on
civil rights stories, labor management and other specials. His career at KSDK spanned 39 years, until
he retired in 1993. It wasn’t long before he was back at KSDK, working part time as a fi lm archivist
in the KSDK library. He and Ray Hoff stetter are in the process of converting 90 MILES of fi lm to tape
in the interest of historical preservation. Everyone who has had the pleasure to know and work
with Bob and Ray agree these two gentlemen have raised the professional standard in the media
industry. Their dedication truly knows no bounds.
When not working, Bob enjoys playing tennis,
walking, creating historical compilations of the Best
of the St. Louis series, and serving as an OASIS
volunteer. Bob and his wife Marcella just
celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.

Walt Bodine With more than 50 years in the
media, Walt Bodine’s background
includes staff announcer, program
scriptwriter, television reporter, news
anchor and news director and stints
as news reporter and news director
for WDAF TV and radio.
As host of the WHB radio show,
“Night Beat,” Walt helped pioneer
the live, call-in radio show format
in Kansas City. He is aff ectionately
known as Kansas City’s “Dean of
Broadcasting”, but describes himself
as a multimedia public nuisance.
Bodine has also served as a Professor
of Communication Studies at the
University of Missouri-Kansas City
and has written several books. He has claimed to have “two of the most well-worn ears in this
metropolitan area.” “I listen to more people in a day than a Menninger psychiatrist, “ he said.
For his work, Walt has received numerous awards including the Kansas City Spirit Award in
1987, recognizing him as the “voice of the people” and “our community conscience.” More recently
Bodine was the recipient of the Bishop John J. Sullivan Award for Communications.
In total, Walt has worked at seven radio stations and four television stations in the Kansas City
market- not counting his fi rst inauspicious reporting job at a Sedalia MO station where he earned
$12.50 a week. Never a big sports fan, Walt was fi red at the end of two weeks because he didn’t
know (and didn’t care to know) the diff erence between the National and American League. He
confesses that 60 odd years later, he still doesn’t know!
