Dear Church Family,

We praise God for all the wonderful things He is doing, despite the many diffi culties this year has brought upon us all. Th ere are things God has opened doors to during this time that would have been diffi cult at other times. We continue to look to how God wants us not just to recover from this COVID era, but how to move the ball down the fi eld in accomplishing the vision He has given us. Th ere is a lot of information in my article this month, but please be sure to take time to read through these updates, and pray through how you can plug-in.

Sunday School Relaunch Phase 2As we try to keep moving forward in our small group’s ministry, we will be off ering three options for Sunday school over this next 7-week session of material (October 18-November 29).1. Large Group Class: We will continue to off er the

same class format that we have been following since early September in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Family Life Center at 10:00 am. We will continue to have a rotation of teachers, with a couple of new ones added, who will teach the material for 25-30 minutes, followed by a 15-20 minute time for people to break out in groups of 3-4 round tables for discussion and prayer. Th ere is no sign up needed for this class. Just continue to come and be blessed by some awesome teachers and through some wonderful discussion, application, and prayers around tables with new and old friends.

2. Genesis Small Group Class: Dick Sanders will be teaching a class from material he has written based on Genesis. Dick is truly knowledgeable regarding the Biblical account of Creation, and how science backs this truth. Th is class will begin at 10:00 am in Room 4 of the FLC. Due to room size and to allow space for distancing, the class will be capped at 14 people. Sign-up is mandatory, and aft er 14 people have signed up, the class will be closed at this time. To sign up, email Paulette at pgardner@fb chhi.org.

3. Family Breakout Class: Brian Parker and I, and other leaders will be rotating through teaching a family-inclusive Sunday School class in the Student Building at 10:00 am. Th is will be targeted at families with children and youth at home. Th e format will closely resemble the class we have been conducting in the Family Life Center, with 25-30 minutes of a lesson, and then breakout groups for discussion. Th e diff erence is that for the breakouts, families will remain together for these breakout groups as parents lead their children through discussion questions provided, and spend time praying together. Th is will be open to all parents of kids and youth, and noise is totally fi ne…we are all parents…we get it! To sign up for this class, also please email Paulette at pgardner@fb chhi.org.

Children’s Church RelaunchAs we continue to monitor the COVID situation and observe our local schools with their policies and procedures, through much prayer our Administrative Council has decided that we are ready to relaunch the fi rst stage of our children’s ministry, Children’s Church. Children are a huge priority for us here, and they have been so patient during this time, so I am so excited to see this ministry relaunch! We will relaunch Children’s Church on October 18, during the 11:00 am service only. Many more details about changes to policies and needs are on the Children’s Ministry page of this newsletter, so please read that to see how your child is aff ected or how anyone can plug in as we need volunteers for this ministry!

Worship Greeter Volunteers NeededWe continue to have a desperate need for both Door Greeters and Parking Lot Greeters to welcome guests to our services. Th is team has been stretched thin due to some with health concerns being abscent during this time, and with the addition of a second worship service. Our several Ushers will continue to remain around the foyer to help with greeting and seating as needed, but we need to expand our welcoming front. Both Greeter positions are open to men and women, or even couples to serve together as well. Th is is such a critical ministry, as it is our very fi rst impression on those new to our church. We do not want any guest entering our doors without a friendly face there to greet them. If you are willing to help as either a

Parking Lot Greeter or a Door Greeter, we would love to have you! You only need to arrive 20 minutes early for the service of your choice and have a friendly and welcoming countenance. To help, email Paulette at pgardner@fb chhi.org, and someone will be in touch.

Annual MeetingIf you are a member, do make plans to be at our Annual Family Meeting on Sunday, November 8 at 6:00 pm. In addition to our updates and presentations from committees, our staff and leadership will be sharing the next piece of our Vision for 2021, with some exciting news about some new opportunities and ministries, which include:• New exciting play-and-fellowship focused ministry

for kids and their parents• New prayer tool to equip you to reach your

neighbors more eff ectively• New local outreach and community-blessing

opportunities• Advancements to our Visitor Follow-up Ministry• Potential campus adjustments

Clearly, there is a LOT going on, as God allows us to continue reaching our community and making disciples of Christ. How are you plugging into this vision? If I can ever be of help as you try to fi nd your place in ministry here, don’t hesitate to reach out.

If we are going to eff ectively make a diff erence in our area for Christ, it’s going to take each and every one of us using our gift s and abilities as God has equipped and called us. It is a pleasure to work alongside you to that end!

In Christ,

Pastor Brett

From the Music Ministry…One of the undeniable outcomes of this recent pandemic has been the spirit of fear in the lives of many – some substantiated and some unfortunately perpetuated and exaggerated by the media. But wherever you may stand concerning our current situation, it is always a good idea to look to God’s Word to gain some perspective.

Some time ago, a friend of mine in the ministry wrote the following short article about the subject of fear. When I discovered it, I thought about the timeliness of his message, and how these truths are sorely needed during these challenging times.

Do You Fear God? Th e tragedy of the modern faith is that we no longer are capable of being terrifi ed. We are afraid of unemployment, we are afraid of disease, we are afraid of fi nancial collapse, we are afraid of not being fulfi lled…but we are not afraid of God. As a result, we have ended up with a need-centered gospel that attracts thousands…but transforms no one. What happened to the bone-chilling, earth-shattering, gut-wrenching, knee-knocking, heart-stopping, life-changing fear that left us speechless, paralyzed, and helpless? What happened to those moments when you and I would open our Bibles and our hands started shaking because we were afraid of the Truth we might fi nd there? Unfortunately, those of us who have been entrusted with the terrifying, frightening Good News have become obsessed with making Christianity safe. We have defanged the tiger of Truth. We have tamed the lion, and now Christianity is so sensible, so accepted, so palatable. Who is afraid of God anymore? I would like to suggest that the Church become a place of fear once again; a place where God continually has to tell us, “Fear not”; a place where our relationship with God is not a simple doctrine or belief or theology. It is God’s burning presence in our lives. I am suggesting that our tame God of relevance be replaced by the God whose very presence shatters our egos into dust and burns our sins into ashes. Th e Church needs to become a gloriously dangerous place where nothing is safe in God’s presence except us. Nothing – including our plans, our agendas, our priorities, our politics, our possessions, and our needs! Th e two men on the road to Emmaus knew they had been with Jesus because their hearts burned from within. Th e weakness of today’s Church is our lack of being in the presence of an awesome, holy God, who continually demands allegiance only to Him. We believe in a God who wants all of us – every bit of us – and He wants us all the time. He wants our worship and our love, but most of all He wants us to trust Him. We must be more in awe of God than we are of our government, our problems, and our own agendas. Our God is perfectly capable of calming the storm or putting us into the middle of one. Either way, if it’s God, we will be speechless and trembling. Our world is tired of people whose God is tame. It is longing to see people whose God is big and holy and frightening and gentle and tender and ours – a God whose love frightens us into His strong and powerful arms where He longs to whisper those terrifying words, “I love you.”

Page 5: The Messenger...FBC Hilton Head Island Student Ministry As we look forward to cooler weather and all the fun fall brings, here are a few more things to mark on your calendar. Sunday

We, the Church, need to be reminded of these truths again and again as we look toward the future and the challenge of being the “light of the world” in this increasingly secular culture. Please know that the staff and leadership of this church are praying for you, that God would help us to both individually and collectively persevere in our faith as we see to make an eternal diff erence in our world today.

MISSI NSTh e Blessing Box will soon

be moved to a new location on our church campus. Th e current location was directly in the sun and there was always the concern that some of the products placed in it would be damaged by the excessive heat. Also, because it was located near a path to the beach,

beachgoers would sometimes help themselves to the supplies, which is not the intent of the Blessing Box. Th e new location will be in the vicinity of the Family Life Center in a more shaded area. Hopefully, the new location will serve as a reminder to our church family to donate food and personal hygiene items for the box when you are able. Th e Mission Committee recently received two monetary donations for supplies, which are being used to keep the blessing box stocked on a long-term basis, and we are incredibily grateful for those who donated these funds.

Collection for our annual

Operation Christmas Child Shoe Boxes

will startat the fi rst

of November. Details will be

in the November Messenger.

October/Fall Kick-Off Edition

FBC Hilton Head Island Student Ministry

As we look forward to cooler weather and all the fun fall brings, here are a few more things to mark on your calendar.

Sunday School Options Before and After October 18th

Our new Sunday School format that began back in September is still going strong. It’s been a great way to get us back in the habit of attending. To continue building and better provide our young families a connection, we will begin a Family Sunday School group in the Student Building on Oct. 18th. Student Ministry Sunday School will continue to meet through the Zoom format until that day.

Drive-In Concert, 6pm on Wednesday, October 7th

We’ve pre-purchased tickets for the “vintage” Christian concert on October 7th featuring Michael W. Smith, Stephen Curtis Chapman, and Mac Powell. It will be a lot of fun for our students and let them see what their parents heard on Christian radio back in the 90s. Concert begins at 6pm and leaving times and Bluff ton pick up will be announced as we get closer to the event. Cost for our students is $10. We also plan to grab dinner ahead of concert time.

Outdoor Movie Night, Friday, October 23rd @8pm

Now that the weather is cooling but we’re still in the COVID era, we’re going to try an outdoor movie night. The weather should be perfect. We’ll have plenty of snacks and a great place to enjoy a movie together. Bring your friends on Friday night and join us to enjoy a night hanging out together at the church. Be on the lookout for additional info and where on the campus the movie will be played.

FCA Fields of Faith, Wednesday, October 28, 6:30pm – 8pm

Held at the Hwy 21 Drive-In in Beaufort. Details will be texted to students. Call Brian at 864-350-3819 for more information.

Wednesday Fall Sessions @ FBC Wednesdays 6:30pm-8pm

This fall our Youth sessions will be held on campus Wednesdays at 6:30 pm. We’ll be teaching through a variety of topics and exploring more application of the scripture for our lives as believers.

2020 Fall RetreatGuys and Girls weekend…November 13th-15th

What is a guys/girls weekend? Well, I’m glad you asked. It’s a weekend where our students get out of their normal routine, study scripture together , and have a whole lot of fun. Our guy and girl students will be split up for the weekend with a couple of designated times that we meet to do something fun or serve together . Guys and girls will be separated in homes or at the church for lodging that weekend. In those breakouts, we’ll have events geared toward our guys and girls and look through the lens of scripture of what it means to be a Christian young man or woman.

As of right now…

We’re gathering info on events or projects that might be useful or interesting to our students for this weekend.

Please mark the dates on your calendar to save them. We can’t wait to see what God does over the weekend.

Live Concert! Drive-in Theater Tour - Concert in Beaufort at Hwy. 21 Drive-InWednesday, October 7th, 5:00 pm

The last drive-in concert was a blast and I have reserved more space as we look to have fun at the drive-in concert on Oct. 7th. Stephen Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, and Mac Powell are live at the Hwy 21 Drive-In in Beaufort. Student tickets are $10 each and students need to have money to eat at 5:00 pm at Moe’s in Bluff ton before the concert.

R.S.V.P. to Brian to reserve your spot. If your student would like concessions, please send money along with your student for them. The weather should be nice, but you may want to bring bug spray.

6:30-8:00PMWEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28

All are invited to come out for an evening of inspiration and encouragement! Enjoy live music performed by a local worship band, and hear students from area schools share testimonies of faith. Watch it on the big screen from your vehicles!

This year we’re taking the annual Fields of Faith event from the

Athletic Field to the Drive-In Theater!

Wednesday Night Adult Bible StudiesReturn October 14th

New Wednesday Night Bible Study for Men begins October 14

Th e Wednesday night Bible Study Class for Men, led by Dr. Chuck Staab, will begin a new study on Wednesday, October 14, at

6:30 PM, in Room #4 of the Family Life Center.

Written by two trusted infl uencers and experts on Generation Z, Sean McDowell, Ph.D., and J. Warren Wallace. So the Next Generation Will Know is an extraordinarily practical guide for anyone concerned with ensuring the next generation understands and embraces a biblical worldview.

Th is is an eight-part video series that walks small groups through ways to meaningfully engage with Generation Z, as well as convey the relevance of a Christian worldview in today’s culture.

Perfect for anyone raising, reaching, or pastoring young people who want to train them in a Biblical worldview, this book is backed by the latest research and focuses on the intensely practical “how” of communicating and relating.

Contact Dr. Chuck Staab at (843) 290-8090 for more information.

Overcoming Our Greatest Struggles to Trust God.When hard times come and it seems God is deviating

from the plan, we assume our life should follow, we are more likely to want to tame God, not trust Him. It is

then that we begin to press into our ways and our own timing. No human can carry the weight of being their

own god, but so many of us try.

In this 6-session study of 1 & 2 Kings, join Lysa TerKeurst in Israel as she honestly reveals

the places of distrust in her own heart while exploring the deeply applicable Scriptures that will

teach us how to truly trust God.

Th is class will meet in the Family Life Center’s Multi-Purpose Room, beginning Wednesday,

Children’s Church Relaunch Starting October 18, we will be relaunching Children’s Church! Here are some important notes. • For now, we will be off ering Children’s Church

during the 11:00 am worship service only. • Children’s Church will continue to be off ered for

Ages 1 through 2nd Grade, and we will be adding a third class to keep class sizes smaller in the immediate future.

• We will be conducting temperature checks on all volunteers and children coming into the Education Building (formerly marked Children’s Building). Volunteers who have experienced cold-like symptoms within the previous 4 days, or who may have been exposed to COVID in the previous 4 days, will be provided with backup teachers. Parents - if your child has experienced similar symptoms or has been exposed to someone with COVID symptoms within 4 days, we ask that you keep them at home.

• For safety concerns due to COVID, we will not be having a large group worship time with all classes together. When your child arrives, they will be checked in and taken to their age-segregated class, where they will remain in that room for worship, lesson, games, and snack.

• Masks: For now, we know that we will not be requiring masks of children 2 and under. For our

older two classes, we will keep you as updated as possible closer to October 18, as we continue to monitor the COVID situation as well as our town’s current mask mandate.

• Parents - make sure that any bags, bottles, snacks, etc that you bring for your child are clearly marked. Th is will help our volunteers as we take extra precautions during this time.

• As we continue to plan for the relaunch of this ministry, we will post updates on our Facebook page and send emails as necessary.

• For children under age 1, we will continue to off er the Mother’s Nursing Room in the back of the Sanctuary, or we can off er one of the other private rooms in the Education Building where you can stream the service.

• WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Pastor Brett is overseeing the scheduling of volunteers for the relaunch of Children’s Church as of now, so if you are willing to volunteer, please email him at bmyers@fb chhi.org. Past volunteers will receive an email soon about plugging back in. We will have a Volunteer Meeting on Sunday, October 11 immediately following the 2nd service in the FLC multi-purpose room. Lunch will be provided. RSVP for this volunteer meeting to pgardner@fb chhi.org by Th ursday, October 8 so that we can plan adequately for lunch.

Pending Relaunch of AWANA and Kids‛ Sunday SchoolWe are currently in the process of evaluating the timelines for relaunching both

AWANA on Wednesday nights and kid-specifi c Sunday School on Sunday mornings. As we continue to make

prayerful plans and observe the situation, we will keep you updated on the progress.

Watch “The Friday 5,” “The Messenger,” and our Facebook page for updates.

Building and Grounds Committee Info You may soon be noticing some new hardware around our campus. Th e Building & Grounds Committee is pursuing a number of avenues for enhancing security. We have already installed vehicle barriers to the rear parking area for whenever the extra parking is not needed. We will soon be adding some gates to control traffi c around the rear buildings, as well as security cameras at key spots around the grounds.
