TRANSCRIPT
The months of January and February are the season of Epiphany,
when we are called to seek the Light. We’re seeking the light of Christ, of course; but in this Epiphany
season, can we seek the light in another person’s heart as well. And in following Jesus, the Light of the
World, can we go so far as to try to see the light in our foes
and enemies as well?

Living in Confusion
The older I get, the more frustrating it gets: not remembering
names, numbers… the word for… for… for… Wall! That’s what I’m
pointing at! A Wall!
As far as I know, I’m not on the road to dementia, but in those
moments of lost-ness, I think I have a brief taste of what it is like to
live in a world that I don’t recognize anymore, peopled with folks
who say they love me, but whom I don’t even recognize
anymore.
Jan. 13, we had a Dementia-Friendly training to prepare us for
becoming a Dementia Friendly church. Randy Kohl from the
Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Waukesha
County had these points to make about how to be
compassionate and welcoming to people with dementia
Introduce yourself to them warmly, using small sentences.
Keep your voice calm, gentle and friendly.
Speak to them from straight ahead, not from behind or to
the side.
Maintain eye contact when listening and speaking with
them.
Don’t touch them unless they know you.
If they start to get frustrated or agitated, respond calmly and
kindly:
“Can I help you?” “Do you need any help finding (the
bathroom, sanctuary, spouse).
If they stop short and don’t know what to do next, ask them,
“Do you need help?” If they’re having trouble getting
through the door, offer to show them to a seat, and tell them
where the bathroom is.
During communion, if someone doesn’t know what to do
next, come into their line of sight guide them through the
steps: “now we take a piece of bread. Now we eat it. Now
we take a cup of juice. Now we put the cup in the basket…”
Offer to take them back to their seats.
ALWAYS WEAR OUR NAMETAGS!
The bottom line is kindness, and being willing to gently ask what
they need.
Christ calls us to open our hearts to the hurting and needy- and
to open our church as well. Be here for our first Dementia-Friendly
service on Feb. 17. We may or may not have any people with
dementia the first Sunday, but we want to be ready when the
ADRC of Waukesha County sends them to us!
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Hawkins

“When I say it's you I like, I'm talking about that part of you that
knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear
or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those
things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers
hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves
more powerful than greed.”

SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY
February 3!!
It’s an annual tradition at Emmanuel.
On Super Bowl Sunday, we have a
special collection of Food Pantry
donations and place our gifts in the
receptacles decorated for the
football team we want to win the
Super Bowl!
Suggested items include hot cereals,
peanut butter, tuna, paper
products, soups, stews (no fresh products please).
The winner is.....(drum roll)....The Kettle Moraine Food
Pantry! Please be generous!
LET’S MAKE EMMANUEL A
DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY CHURCH!
Over and over again, we have striven to open ourselves
to ALL of God’s people.
We are being given another opportunity to open our
hearts! People with dementia have special needs that we
might not immediately think of. When a person with
Alzheimer’s sees a dark rug going into a light tile floor
(like our front entry), they will often stop and refuse to go
over it. Why? Because it looks like an abyss. It looks like if
they step from the light tile into that dark space, they will
fall into a hole. Who would have thought?
February 17, we would like to open our doors as the only
Dementia-Friendly Church in Waukesha County. At this
point, there just aren’t any other churches who have
consciously, intentionally made it comfortable for people
with dementia to attend. But to do this, we need to know
what it takes to be a dementia-friendly
congregation...you’ll find pointers and suggestion in the
Pastor’s article.
Waukesha County, through the ADRC, will begin to
advertise us as a Dementia-Friendly congregation in
February, when we hope to open our doors to this
ministry.
So, look forward to Feb. 17 as our kick-off date!
Order SCRIP February 3!!
Using the SCRIP/Gift Card system is
a GREAT way to help Emmanuel
raise revenue...and it costs you no
extra $$. Orders are taken the first
Sunday of the month and delivered
to you the next. A wide variety of
gift cards are available for most anything you need!
MISSION & OUTREACH
Singing Bowl for FEBRUARY and
beyond...
The Singing Bowl for February will go to
Women’s Literacy and the establishment of women’s
businesses in Serbia through Church World Service.
Women are largely the stable center of families in need,
and their success means the success of their children. Let
your spare change make a difference in the lives of
Serbian women and their families!
The Singing Bowl for March and April will go to the
establishment of water sources and wells in South Sudan.
Many living in remote areas have to walk hours every day
just to find a water source, which is often contaminated
water bearing diseases. Since its inception in 2003, Water
For South Sudan has drilled 349 wells, with the capacity to
serve 600 people. In 2018, they completed their first
latrine at a primary school in Way, serving 800 students.
MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL
As I prepare this article for the newsletter, we are just
beginning our Family Promise host week and a new
experience with a brand new baby.
Thank you volunteers for again being so gracious with
your time and helping our homeless families. We have
had two generous monetary donations for our FP
program from Kristen Voskuil’s mother, Ruth and friends of
Ron Blaschuk and Francine Langlais. We are grateful to fill
our cupboard.
Family Promise will be sponsoring a fundraiser on
Saturday, February 16th at Christ the King Lutheran
Church in Delafield from 7pm to 11pm. It will be a
Valentine’s Swing Dance with instructors and a live band.
Admission is $15 per person. Speak to Sue Stelling or
Charlotte Voigt for more information. A flyer is included in
this newsletter and also on the front entry window beside
the doors.
PLEASE NOTE: we are missing a Fisher Price toy from the
white cupboard in fellowship hall. See the picture on the
Family Promise bulletin board.
Kiosk Collections The kiosk in the church foyer has drawers labeled for
different things we collect on an ongoing basis. It’s a
great way to get rid of unneeded items and help out at
the same time:
Grocery receipts from Albrecht’s Sentry store in
Delafield. We receive a rebate of the total receipts
we submit. Those rebates help our bottom line!
Empty printer ink cartridges are turned in at Office
Max to earn credit for Emmanuel purchases.
First Aid items/new toothbrushes/OTC pain meds
(unopened) are given to the Free Clinic in
Oconomowoc.
Used cell phones and chargers are sold on eBay
with proceeds benefiting our bottom line.
Used eye glasses are given to the Dousman Lions
Club: throughout the year, Lions, Leos and other
volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver
them to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers
(LERCs). LERC volunteers clean, sort by prescription
strength and package the glasses. Recycled
glasses are distributed to people in need in low and
middle income communities where they will have
the greatest impact.
Please place them in the kiosk
drawer (in the foyer) marked
for cell phone collection.
THANK YOU Bill Welch who
turns those old phones into
dollars for Emmanuel by selling
them on Ebay.
THANK YOU to all who regularly leave
bags of aluminum cans and other
precious metals outside the garage
door. A reminder to everyone, our
recycling of these Precious Metals
helps Emmanuel’s bottom line, so
please save them, bag them up and
leave them in front of the garage. Thank you to Ron
Blaschuk and Tom Stelling for taking them to the recycling
center throughout the year.
DRIVERS NEEDED! It’s that time of year when we lose
many of our faithful Dousman Meals
drivers to the warmer climates! We
have ten regular drivers...6 of them
go to the sunshine for all or part of
the winter...won’t you say “thank you” to them by filling
their spots this winter? We deliver meals to the
homebound once every four weeks. You would need to
be available between 11:30am and approximately 1pm
Monday through Friday or at least one or two of those
days and have your own vehicle. PLEASE speak to Donna
to volunteer for the winter months. Thank you.

Shooter Awareness Training, February 24
after worship It’s not going to happen; it would never happen to us.
But… it’s better to be prepared than to be caught short if
the unimaginable happens. Officer Ryan Lipovsek from
the Summit Police Department will be joining us Feb. 24 to
discuss plans and strategies. Everyone is asked to come,
but especially teachers, greeters and ushers.
There will be a MURDER at Emmanuel
on March 23rd
(But don’t worry, it’s a good thing!)
On Saturday, March 23rd at 4pm Emmanuel will be hosting
a murder mystery dinner in order to raise funds for our
capital improvements. Everyone will be responsible for
selling tickets for $15 each which
includes dinner and a fun show
acted out by our own talented
group at Emmanuel. Audience
members will be introduced to a
wild group of characters and
witness a murder. Then the
audience will become
detectives, ask the suspects
questions, and try to figure out
who done it. While the show goes on a lovely Italian meal
will be served including: spaghetti with sauce, meatballs,
garlic bread, desserts, coffee, and punch. Beer, wine,
and soda will be available for additional costs.
If you interested in being an actor… please contact
Sarah Erickson-Bhatt who is the director of the show. (217-

Kristen is also organizing the food and drink and will post
a sign-up sheet for food donations and volunteer waiters
and kitchen staff soon.
So be an accessory to crime and help Emmanuel keep a
non-leaky roof over our heads!
Ladies Fellowship will meet
on Wednesday, February
13 from 1-3 PM in fellowship
hall. Corrine Mayer and
Ann Carpenter will be the
hostesses.
Thank you note... Thank you for all you have done and given to my mom
(Mary Fran Roberts) and me. There are no words to
express our gratitude. Your acts of kindness have refueled
the sunshine in Mary Fran’s heart.
Humble thanks,

GROUNDED, by Pastor Simone for A New
Common Ground
In American English, the word “grounded” has a number
of meanings:
It could mean parental punishment of a rebellious
teenager.
It could mean well-balanced and steadily sensible.
It could mean an aircraft that is not allowed to fly.
It could mean modest despite high praise and
public recognition.
But for A New Common Ground, it means we are looking
for the spiritual spaces that connect us, rather than those
that divide us. And in our “grounded-ness” of course we
are interested in the soil itself, that grounds us all. We are
truly, the “farm-to-table dinner community” that
Emmanuel has “planted” as a ministry to the greatly
increasing number of people who are “spiritual but not
religious.”
And so, the principles that ground us are openness to
diverse spiritual traditions; curiosity about spiritual journeys
of friends and strangers; respect for the pathways of all
living beings.
We are a discussion community. We do light candles.
We do enjoy a grace before our common meal. But oh,
can we ever talk. We talk while we greet each other so
gladly. We catch up over preparing the food. We talk
with our mouths full, sometimes! We talk as we clear up
the nice big kitchen we are blessed to use. We are still
talking as we leave, going out into the night. Some of us
“belong” to a specific tradition: UCC, Lutheran,
Episcopalian and Judaism for example. Others are NO
WAY NOT CHURCH people. But what we are finding is the
sweetness of peacefully sharing “faith-without-borders.”
Thank you for holding us in your prayer and vision for
more civil discourse, more loving community and deeper
spiritual engagement.
With prayer for our one Earth and all its common ground.
On January 7th we were blessed for the first time
with angels from the Easter Seals Adult Day Center
of Waukesha cleaning our church. This idea was
presented by our own Joanne Szymanski whose
daughter, Stacy attends the center. They are a
delightful group of people and are so happy to be
‘put to work.’ They are a blessing to us and we’re so
pleased that Joanne brought this opportunity to us!
The plan is for them to come twice a month to help
keep our church clean.
