PARISH HALL CEILING PROBLEMS. I have been asked by many parishioners about the
posts in the basement and parish hall. For quite a
while the sagging ceiling in the parish hall has ap-
peared to be getting worse so we contacted the struc-
tural engineer who worked with us on the choir loft
extension and had him come out and inspect the
trusses and develop a plan of action to repair any
damage. He discovered cracks in the bottom chords
of two of the roof trusses where the sagging was lo-
cated. He provided us with a temporary fix and in-
formed us that we should not use the parish hall un-
til the temporary fix was in place which would allow
us to safely use the parish hall until we can make
permanent repairs. The temporary solution was to
install 8” by 8” supports from the basement floor to
the parish hall ceiling near the door to the main hall-
way and near the northwest corner of the parish hall.
After these two supports were installed, Bob Hiltz,
John Mathieu, myself, and Bob Walz from Team
Construction went into the attic and inspected the
entire length of all the trusses. We found some more
small cracks and sent photos to the engineer and he
determined that we should install two more supports
in the center of the span in the two northern trusses.
This was done and the parish hall is now safe to use
for all normal functions. The engineer is working on
specifications for a permanent repair which will be
completed probably in late spring. At that time the
temporary posts will be removed. If you have any
questions feel free to contact Bob Hiltz, John
Mathieu, or me and we will answer them to the best
of our knowledge.

WINTER HOSPITALITY OVERFLOW
(W.H.O.) SEASON IS UPON US. "Your ordinary acts of love and hope point to the ex-
traordinary promise that every human life is of inesti-
mable value." Desmond Tutu
The Winter Hospitality Overflow program (W.H.O.)
has been opened now for a couple of months and
both shelters are running at full capacity. The
W.H.O.
program works because volunteers, like the members
of St. Luke's ~San Lucas, give of their time and talent
to keep the shelter doors open.
It is time to sign up for a shift for our week at St. Paul
Lutheran Church.
St. Luke's will be hosting a week at the men's shelter
at St. Paul Lutheran Church during the week of Sun-
day, February 1 (late afternoon) through Sunday,
February 7 (early A.M.). Look for Stephen or Janet
Butler between services to sign up. If you already
know the day and shift time you would like to work,
you can also call Stephen at 600-5739 or email him at
Remember, as the weather turns cold and winter ar-
rives we are given this opportunity to put our faith
into action. To help our brothers and sisters in Christ
with the welcome and warmth of a caring community
working to address the most basic of human needs.
Blessings, Stephen Butler
NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM Our Steinway “B” piano, made possible by a gracious
gift from Janet and Darrell Williams, is settling in to
the rich acoustics of our renovated sanctuary. A three
-concert dedicatory recital series is planned to intro-
duce the piano to the greater-Vancouver community.
On January 24th, the celebrated jazz pianist and
Steinway artist Randy Porter will launch the series
with a rare solo concert of jazz standards along with
some of his original compositions. On February 14th,
soprano Catherine van der Salm and Friends will
showcase the piano as an equal partner in the inter-
pretation of art song with some special selections for
Valentine’s Day. On March 14th, the LeRoi-Nickel
Duo will play with four hands on one piano and in-
clude Schubert’s haunting F minor Fantasy among
other piano duet classics. All three concerts are
scheduled for Saturday nights at 7 PM. Admission is
free, with a free-will offering taken to support the
continuation of musical events at St. Luke’s.
Mark your January calendar for the 24th when Stein-
way artist Randy Porter will launch the Steinway
dedication series at St. Luke’s-San Lucas. The Orego-
nian wrote that “Porter has built a reputation as a musi-
cian’s musician, a knowledgeable, inventive, and so-
phisticated player with a remarkable sense of time
and gorgeous keyboard facility.” He has performed
with many jazz greats, including Freddy Hubbard,
Art Farmer, Diane Schuur, and Benny Golson in this
country and in France, Italy, Greece, and China. He
lists over thirty commercial recordings in his credits,
including jazz standards and original compositions.
The San Lucas community should take special note
that Mr. Porter has a special affinity with Latin styles,
due to his Hispanic roots in San Diego. Bring your
family, friends and neighbors!

water bills are all part of the operations of our
church. Knowing how much money will be received
is critical to our stewardship of the church.
We currently have 106 individuals or families pledg-
ing. That is below our number from 2014 of 114. Our
hope is that the number pledging will rise over 120,
as it was in 2013.
As always, thank you for your continued support of
our parish.
