The MESSENGER
Santa Barbara District
President’s Letter
Dear Sisters,
It is with both joy and sadness that I write this column for the last time. My four-year term of office as your district president comes to an end at our Annual Meeting and Celebration on September 28th. It is both bitter and sweet for me to contemplate. When advising us how to treat one another, Paul tells us in Romans 12:15 “to rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” The sweetest part of this job has been to meet, get to know and work with so many of you throughout the Santa Barbara District. I have been privileged to share in your happy moments and to mourn with you when things occur in your lives that cause you to mourn. But the governing documents, our UMW Constitution and Bylaws, decree that district and conference presidents can only serve 2 two year terms. This is a wise policy; it is easy to burn out. I really look forward to giving up some of the traveling that I have had to do representing the Santa Barbara District on the Conference Team. However nothing can replace the wonderful friendships that I have made doing this. The presidents of the other seven districts that I have worked with in the past four years all have been outstanding women, full of joy and energy as they carry out our Purpose. The same can be said of all of our Conference officers. How blessed we are to live in the California Pacific Conference with its rich diversity and opportunities. I thank you for giving me this gift. Some things I will not give up, however. I will still visit your units, and be available to you, advising and nurturing you as best I can. I will still fill my spirit with the revitalizing atmosphere of Mission u. I will still attend our Conference and District meetings. And I will still bask in your friendship and offer mine as we work together in Mission. Your Sister in Christ, Beverly King

Who Is Your Unit’s Quiet Disciple?
At our District Annual Meeting and Celebration we honor the women who are presented to the District as the Quiet Disciple from their unit. She is the person who can always be counted on to help no matter what. Both a Mary and a Martha rolled into one, you find her working in her unit and her church, faithfully and without fanfare. But hush, her name is a surprise until she is honored at the meeting. E-mail Bev King at [email protected] by September 25th with her name. And please try to ensure that she will be with us.

!
From Your Secretary… I look forward to seeing you all at our Annual Meeting and Celebration on Saturday, September 28th in Thousand Oaks. It is always great to get together with friends and review the past year’s activities. It has been a pleasure to be your District Secretary for the last two years. I have met so many wonderful women and learned so much. I know you will welcome our new secretary with open arms. I am attaching an invitation from Vera Tom, our Conference Secretary, that may also be of interest to Unit
secretaries. This is an online training session for UMW secretaries 5(!R$'($%',>W!Q;-;%)!1LW!1E.9W!H#56!DUEE!

From the Desk of Spiritual Growth How many of you were inspired by this year at Mission u? I had the pleasure of helping our Cal-Pac Spiritual Growth Coordinator Maxine Wheeler in arranging and decorating the Meditation Room at Horton Hall. There was a wall of prayer that was put up and I was happy to see so many petitions. I also assisted at communion by giving the “wine” on the last day. I took “The Roma of Europe” class. The class was taught by Laura Wilson. She was very informed about the Roma people. She even taught us Romani words and put on Romani music for us to listen. The ten things that stood out for me were: 1. Hitler killed approximately 500,000 to 1.5 million Romani people. 2. Romani women wash the top clothes and bottom clothes separately. 3. Romani people began in Northern India and spoke Sanskrit. 4. One million Roma live in the United States. 5. A Romani woman’s skirt bottom cannot brush up against a man. 6. Romani can be found in Finland, Greece, Iceland, and Russia. 7. Romani have their own flag but no country. 8. If a Romani girl gets pregnant by a non-Romani, her parents take the baby. 9. The head of the group (cumpania) is called a king or chief. 10. Family life and relationships are critical in the Romani community. I highly encourage everyone to get informed about the plight of the Roma people. The book we used in class was titled The Roma of Europe by Larry Beman. Your local library should have other books on this important subject. Blessings, Maria Reyna

An Invitation If you were unable to attend the “Mission u” study on The Roma People of Europe you are
invited to join the women of the Arroyo Grande UMW on Saturday, September 14th
for a Spiritual
Retreat at the Arroyo Grande United Methodist Camp Ground. The day will focus on “The Roma People of Europe”, one of the three mission studies for United Methodist Women for 2013. “Who are the Roma?” you may ask. The Roma are the single largest minority group in Europe. Historically, the Roma were a people in motion with running roots in multiple nations. Marginalized and ostracized, they moved from town to town, region to region carrying their culture and history with them in oral tradition through songs, storytelling and poems. Theirs is a human rights struggle for justice and dignity.
Laura Wilson, President of the Long Beach District UMW, will be our leader for the day. a,;#,!0$'!5($!5H!

Lunch will be served at noon and followed with a wrap up of the day, ending at 3:00 p.m. Registration is $20, and will include morning refreshments and lunch. Car-pooling from Arroyo Grande UMC, (275 N. Halcyon Road, Arroyo Grande,) will be available. This is a wonderful opportunity to grown spiritually and to learn about a group of people that many are unaware exist. We will also learn how the Methodist Church and other organizations are working with these people today to help them find a better life. We hope you will make every effort to join us. Bring a friend along to share in this day. Deadline for reservations is September 6th. For further information, contact Eva McClure (805-474-1458) or Betty Ashton (805-489-3932).

Program Resources I hope you’re all enjoying your Summer and found time for several good books from our reading program. I’d like to share a few books I enjoyed and hope to tempt you into reading them. From Education for Mission, I read I am Hugenite in large print. It’s the story of a girl’s childhood in a Hugenite community. Her family leaves the community when she is 10 years of age. She explains the difficulties of adapting to the English community of mostly Mennonites. There is a great contrast between owning nothing in the Hugenite community and self provision in the English community. Her Dad and Mom have the greatest adjustment, but her thinking must change too. I found it fascinating and thought provoking. For Leadership Development I read Outcasts United. This book was about Clarkston, Georgia, which was designated as a refugee settlement center in the 1990s and became the first American home for families in flight from the world’s war zones. It’s the inspiring real life story of a Jordanian college student who chooses to coach a Soccer team of boys from the projects. The boys are of multiple ethnic groups. By getting to know their families she manages to build trust and pull the team together. With tough love and fiery determination she changes the entire community for the better. I found it a fascinating read. It went a little overboard on the soccer maneuvers at times, but was intriguing to see how she motivates the boys to pull themselves together into a cohesive team in spite of their very diverse backgrounds. It’s a great way to broaden our outlooks especially for the inner city churches that are shrinking in size and facing change. For Nurturing for Community I read Same kind of Different as Me in Large Print. At first it’s confusing because you’re following 2 men raised in diverse situations yet finding themselves becoming good friends. One is a black sharecropper from Alabama who comes to Fort Worth TX as a tramp on the rail road seeking his fortune. The other man is Caucasian from East Texas with a college degree and is a successful Art Dealer. The two men are brought together by the wife of the Art Dealer and grow together over time in a most miraculous way. The chapters alternate the 2 men’s parallel lives. It’s also a fascinating read. God becomes the mortar bonding them together into a beautiful friendship. For Spiritual Growth I read My Tummy Talked in Church Today. This is a collection of humorous devotions and poems for adults who enjoy children. I would envision its use as devotion material for a fellowship circle of young women with children. For Social Action I read In Our Backyard. This is a collection of true stories about human trafficking victims, survivors and the traffickers themselves. The stories not only inform, but also continue our study of modern day slavery. Only this time it focuses on the United States. These are the 5 books I will list on my Personal Reading Program List which along with the reading of the bimonthly Response Magazine qualifies me for Plan I. These Reading program lists need to be filled out and given to your Unit Secretary of Program Resources by January 5 of 2014. You are on your honor as to whether you read the books. There is no report other than listing of the titles. I hope every unit will turn in a couple lists this year. We had only 8 out of 31 units participation in 2012. I’m hoping to double that this year. You still have time to read your books before the holidays are upon us. I’ll have a full supply of books for both the adults and Children at the SB District United Methodist Women Annual Meeting and Celebration in Thousand Oaks on September 28. I’ll see you there! Happy Reading! Thank you, Carolyn Berry
