The Messenger
~ A Communication Ministry of Salem United Church of Christ ~
February, 2021
Volume 67, Issue 2
We are God’s children called to seek, share, teach, and continue to experience the Word of God.
“Separated from God”
One of my favorite books is The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. I’ve read
it over and over again, and I believe no book has ever been written that
better deals with the subject of temptation.
The book is unique, because is it presented as a series of letters between a
Senior Demon named Screwtape and his nephew, a Junior Demon named
Wormwood. It the letters, Screwtape is advising his nephew on how to
properly tempt Wormwood’s “patient” (the man he has been assigned to
lure away from God).
Lewis is a master of laying out the startling realities of temptation, and how
we are so often led astray by things that seem quite innocuous and even
healthy. He explores every aspect of our daily experience and makes one
think about even the most trivial parts of life. As he does so, he makes it
clear that literally anything in our lives can draw us away from God if we
pursue it at the wrong time, in the wrong way, with the wrong motives, or to
the wrong extent.
Understanding this teaches us to ask important questions about our
activities. Take any part of your life and ask this about it: Does this cause
me to love God more or does it distract me from him? Does this fill me with
faith and hope in God or fear and worry about the future? Does this fill me
with love for others or does it cause me to hate and mistrust others? If we
were to honestly evaluate all areas of our lives with questions like this, we
would know what is helping us toward God and what, no matter how
healthy it seems, is slowly separating us from him.
Heed this wisdom from Uncle Screwtape to Wormwood: “You will say that
these are very small sins; and doubtless, like all young tempters, you are anxious to be able to report
spectacular wickedness. But do remember, the only thing that matters is the extent to which you
separate the man from [God]. It does not matter how small the sins are provided that their cumulative
effect is to edge the man away from the Light and out into the Nothing. Murder is no better than cards
if cards can do the trick. Indeed, the safest road to Hell is the gradual one - the gentle slope, soft
underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.” --- Rev. Jeremy

161st Salem United Church of Christ Annual Meeting Plan
As noted in the December 15, 2020 letter, we are going to mail documents that are typically voted on during the Annual Meeting to our Congregation Members for their review. To ensure the Congregation has an opportunity to provide feedback to the Council, we ask you to provide any comments or remarks to the church office, either by mail or email by February 5, 2021, or during a ZOOM meeting scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on February 4, 2021. You will need to contact Kerri at the church office to request an invite to this ZOOM Meeting. The Council will review the comments and determine what action, if any, is needed during our February 11, 2021 Council Meeting. The new Council will meet February 14, 2021 to elect new officers. *****************************************************************************
Called to Encourage One evening recently after work, I sat in my chair and began to work on a notification chime on my cell phone. There was nothing urgent or even particularly necessary in what I was doing. I paged through places that ever seem to be confusing to me. Our little dog Maggie jumped up on my lap. I paid no attention, as I felt I was getting close to my aim with the phone. Her cold wet nose nudged my hand forcefully. I gently rebuked her repeated insistence. A moment later, she even more forcefully placed herself between myself and the phone. I stopped and put the phone on the end table and gave the dog the attention she was asking for. All day long this little animal looks so forward to taking a walk with me or just being with me. She wants my attention and it is good for both of us to simply be together. Being humbled by my dog, I never picked the phone up again that evening except to put it into the holder and then finally plugging it in to charge. Once plugged in, the
phone was taking in energy, but how often in my day has it distracted me, and how much of my energy to be God’s child has been used up? Ironically, maybe the phone has been taking energy all along with my consent. The concerns I have had about carrying a “smart phone” I find to be well founded. There is no doubt it is an amazing tool; there is no doubt it is a temptation into a world of distraction. Each generation has likely lifted concerns, from television, radio, and even newspapers. In the time of Jesus, what was the distraction of the day..going to the arena to watch gladiators, to see Christians eaten by hungry lions? Whatever it is that distracts, confuses, and deludes our thinking impairs our mission to encourage life. I have been the recipient of encouragement throughout my life, and I have many to be thankful towards, but above all God is my greatest encourager! God is also your and everyone’s greatest encourager. If you have read this far, go a bit
farther now. Open your bible to 1 Kings, chapter 19 and read the chapter. Consider how many times and ways Elijah just wanted to “give up” and how God worked to rouse him, as a cow gently nuzzles and pushes at her newborn calf, as if to say “get up, I am pulling for you, I care, I love, my very being says with all might, your existence is beautiful, needful, and I so desire you to thrive.” When we have a wilted plant do we immediately pass it over, or do we stop and pay it more attention than all the others? God encourages our very breathing. Thankfully God’s love is so high there is no place where God becomes distracted. God’s perfect love holds us just right, not too tightly or too loosely. If God so encourages us, we being daughters and sons need to encourage one another, encouraging all life for God’s great glory. Amen.
---- Pastor John
Pray for the Bullies Too
In middle school, bullies are everywhere. And with the ever-growing social media platforms, they aren’t just at school. Sometimes, children can’t escape them. And honestly, it is heartbreaking. I struggle with helping children through bullying because, as a teacher, we are taught to
search for the problem that is causing the bully to act the way they are. But, also, bullying just….sucks! There is nothing meaner than a middle school bully.
Except….adult bullies. Turns out, bullying is not just an issue in middle school. Sure, we don’t use the word bully to describe adults, but they are there. Adults who thrive when they spread hate and hurt. Adults who treat others like they are worthless. Adults who are simply mean. Now, I am not naive. I know there are always going to be mean people in the world. I can’t fix that. But what I can do is help our youth survive their middle school and high school years and grow up to be good, moral, NICE, loving Christians. Not bullies.
One of the hardest steps of this, however, is praying for your enemies. During his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.” Just as we are supposed to love our neighbors, we are also asked to pray for those who are our enemies.
No matter the age, pray for the bullies. Heaven knows we have a lot right now in our society. Pray that they find the light to shine away the darkness, love to soften the hate, and comfort to heal the hurt. Because hatred doesn’t just come out of thin air. There is something that is causing the hate. Pray that they find peace. ---- Becca

Nursing Home Gift Bags Starting February 21, Salem Mission Committee will be collecting donations for gift bags for nursing home residents. In place of bringing in actual items, there will be an Amazon wish list to purchase from. Monetary donations will be accepted as well. Bags will be assembled on March 21 after worship (with gloves and masks). Save your Change! In April, Salem Mission Committee will be putting out “Boomerang Bottles”. These bottles are for people to take home and fill with loose change. Then, return the bottles by the beginning of May. The money collected will go to Relevant Pregnancy Care Center in Highland as a Mother’s Day gift to mothers in need. Have a mission idea? Have mission ideas that the whole church could get involved with? The Mission Committee is open to any and all ideas! At a church meeting held in the German Evangelical church Tuesday, it was voted to discontinue the English services, which were being held every two weeks in the evening." What is wrong with this newspaper article? Answer: The German services were discontinued, not the English, in January, 1917. The first confirmation class to be confirmed in English was held that year also.
