“The Road to Resurrection”
Throughout my life I have
learned there are a variety of
traditions and actions upheld
within congregations around the
world that are done out of a true
spirit of devotion and faith but without true
knowledge or clarity as to why these actions are
important or worth preforming as a Christian.
Over the next several weeks we will partake in a
variety of worship services, educational
experiences, and activities that will commemorate
various aspects of this season. Some of these
actions will seem familiar to the season and some
will feel totally new. However, each of these
isolated components have been established to
ensure we have a clear well-rounded perspective
on the significance of this high holy period within
our Christian liturgical calendar.
During our Sunday morning worship experiences
we will take a detailed look at the actions of Jesus
Christ as he “Journeys towards Calvary”. Paying
close attention to the lessons Jesus thought were
necessary to impart into those he encountered.
Likewise we will share in two communal worship
experience; Ash Wednesday Service and Maundy
Thursday Service. The early church determined
Ash Wednesday to be the beginning of the Lenten
period of fasting and renewal. Ashes are used as
sign of penitence. In the Holy Scriptures, ashes
symbolize frailty, death, sadness, mourning, and
repentance. In our penitence we simultaneously
express sorrow and repentance for our sins as well
as a rededication to be purified and renewed.
Towards the end of this period of renewal we will
follow in the actions of Jesus Christ and gather for
a community foot washing ceremony. “It was just
before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the
hour had come for him to leave this world and go
to the Father. Having loved his own who were in
the world, he loved them to the end…4 so he got up
from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and
wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he
poured water into a basin and began to wash his
disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was
wrapped around him. (John 13:1,4-5).
To help provide depth to our personal spiritual jour-
neys, during this season we will host our very first
Bible Institute. This new component of our Christian
Education department will provide a series of classes
throughout the season of Lent geared towards
answering the questions, What is Lent, and Why do
we celebrate it? The Lenten Bible Institute will
closely resemble Vacation Bible School as it will
include specialized classes for all ages. We will
explore the various familiar topic associated with
Lent such as ashes, penitence, alms giving, fasting,
Christ passion, resurrection and renewal. This will be
an opportunity for us to collectively develop and
affirm our knowledge of these aspects of our
Christian Faith.
As we enter into the Lenten season we are invited
into a season of personal devotion to seek Gods
clarity, wisdom, and guidance. We are invited into a
time of personal penitence and intentional reflection
on our actions, as well as the actions of Jesus Christ
as he “Journeys towards Calvary”. I petition each of
you to remain open to gaining clarity or position
yourselves to potentially learn something totally new
about this Holy season. Go deeper into your own
personal spiritual journey with Jesus than you have
in the past.
2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2 states, “So we are ambassadors
for Christ, since God is making his appeal through
us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled
to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who
knew no sin, so that in him we might become the
righteousness of God. 6 As we work together with
him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God
in vain. 2 For he says, “At an acceptable time I have
listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have
helped you.” See, now is the acceptable time; see,
now is the day of salvation!
