VOLUME 49, NO. 1 MERCYHURST COLLEGE SEPTEMBER 24,1976

This year there is a new face inthe office of the dean by the nameof Dr. Jerry Trimble. Trimble, previous to his appointment to his position as deanof the college and Vice-Presidentof Academic Services at Mercy-hurst, was both a teacher andadministrator at Salve Regina

    DR. JERRY TRIMBLE

College in Newport, Rhodebland. Before that he taught atColgate University. He comes tothe college with a total of fiveyears of administration experience and six years inteaching. He obtained hisbachelor's deg ree! from theUniversity of^Cincinnati;and hismaster's irom the University ofNew York at Albany. In 1973 he.received (his doctorate in an interdisciplinary program1 including I studies in psychology, organizational development, andadministration* and C highereducation. | kWhen he first came to Mercy-hurst, he liked the college forcertain reasons. One was that thefaculty-student relations werevery relaxed and friendly. This hefound remarkable because of thescho ol's ' high Ph.D. ratio.Another* was that -the [studententhusiasm washigh. Also, it wasvery much [like Salve I ReginaCollege. -$ i . ^ | |He has set forth three prioritieshe wishes 5 to a maintain in hisposition.as dean. The first is toretain his identity along with hisnew job such thatfhe will not fallinto the slot of the stereo-typicaldean. SAt * the t same time herealizes the responsibility he ha s

to the school and will try to keepthe standards of the school asalready set. Second; he wishes tokeep good relations with allmembers of the administrationand faculty. By this he meansworking with them in planning (liefuture of the college, the policiesof the college,' and most importantly meeting the needs of thestudents. Last, he wishes to setforth "philosophy"'of athleticsfor the college since presentlythere is not one. Thus, anydecisions that are to be madeinvolving sports may have somereason or'justification. Already,he has fformed a committee ofeight members from the faculty, administration, and student bodyto study sports a t the college andto eventually arrive at somephilosophy. &^vS^pl 1

Above a\\\though, Trimble'sconcern is I with the* students. From his teaching experiences hevery much likes the idea of aclose association with students. So far he says that a largemajority of the students^he.hasmet liave been students who arein academic trouble. He plans tobegin teaching again soon alongwith his present position in orderto s atis fy h is need . ^ ^ S ^ f e ^

Also, i who hasjurisdiction if there is trouble atBriggs, campus security or theErie Police Department? $% IThese questions were posed toE.W. Kennedy^ Director |ofStudent Affairs at Mercy hurst.Kennedy said that, the apart?ments were fumigated six timesover the summer to eliminate anypossibility 1 of cockroaches.Kennedy noted tha t the reason theapartments were not cleaned wasthat the chemical could not bewashed off due to the chance thatif the residue was removed theeggs of the cockroaches couldpossible hatch and the problemwould have to be dealt with again.Kennedy also mentioned thatthe residue | was scrubbed offonce, and soon i afterwards J thecockroaches reappeared. As c far as I jurisdiction goes,Kennedy pointed out that the Eriepolice w ill coo pera te] withMercyhurst by patrolling theBriggs Apartments as part of the
