Brown pushes housing policy changeBy Kevin McHughMcrciad Editor

Director of Residence Life GaryBrown said he is in favor of a proposedhousing policy change that would al-low only seniors to live off campus.4 'From a housing and aneducator'spoint of view, it would be a goodmove," he said. Brown added that themove would only affect about SO stu-dents. W f % m 1gj "Thereasonmany students movedoff campus is because of!the pointssystem they had no apartments to pickfrom," Brown said. IThe proposal was made before therecent off-campus assault, according"This is not a question ofrights," IKennedy said."Just as driving is a privil-ege and not a right, attending Mercyhurst College is aprivilege and not a right."

to E. William IKennedy, director ofstudent services. That incident simplygave impetus to the issue."This is not a question of rights,"Kennedy said. "Just as driving is aprivilege and not a right, attendingMercyhurst College is a privilege andnot a right. Mercyhurst is a club: youeither join it or you don't.Two student committees, one onhousing contracts,.: the other on thehousing points system have been setup to research theproposal. The com-mittee ont contracts includes JenMarshall,.Janet Holzhaeusscr, KarenTrapolsi and Colleen Ffceney(!Thecommittee on the points system in-cludes Brad Fairfield, Trish Mozdy,Nancy Glotzbach and Colleen Fceney.

According to Brown, die movwould create a more solid and supevised community environment. Wigreater supervision, the probabilityincidents such as December's assaurecurring is decreased, lie said.Kennedy explained that asMercyhurst is a nonprofitorganization, if the move was profitable, those profiwould simply be reinvestedin the college.

Gary BrownSome have argued that the move tomore on-campus housing is an attemptto increase revenue. Kennedy ex-plained that as Mercyhurst is a non-profit organization, if the move wasprofitable, those profits would simplybe reinvested in the college.

Brown added that on-campus students do better academically thathose living off campus, thus the mowould improve academic standardsA decision on the proposal will bmade before the end of Spring termKennedy said. | >

According to a recent ad^inTime magazine an estimated 27million Americans have troublereading a menu or a job applica-tion. ?. This should be a crime! Espe-cially, since politicians considerthe U.S., the most advanced, besteducated country in the worlds4 'The problem at Mercy hurstis not that students don't knowhow to read/* according to Cathie *ngKellogg Anderson, director of thereading lab. The problem is that alot of students lack the necessarystudy habits and reading speed tokeep up with the necessary read-ing. This is because of the speedthe professors cover the materialduring the 10 week term, Ander-son said.

tures exclusively. This takes awayany motivation?a student has tocrack the spine of his text muchless take the time to actually sitdown and read it When test timecomes around the student gets an' 'A'' writing down what he hasheard. Because of that the prob-lem goes undetected.

    ...a l o t o f students lackessary

and reading speed to keepupw i necessary

Anderson adds that the lack ofstudy skills has to be caught early, preferably in the freshmen year, because once a student starts fail-ing classes it is a lot harder torepair the damage.Professors don't help theproblem when they test from lee-

There is no embarrassment inhaving study or reading prob-lems, everybody has some to onedegree or another. The problem iswhen it is left alone and nothing isdone to correct i tPhyllis Aiello, director offreshman studies, said that allstudents are not tested for reading/study problems. Only those withborderline SAT scores are testedto determine if and how muchhelp is needed. Students with lowSATs are automatically placed inthe necessary classes. The problem with that proce-dure is that the SATs and later

reading tests can be passedfbysimply guessing. When studentscan use patterns or football playsto fill in the blanks and pass tests, reading problems grow. The first step a student, who ishaving trouble reading or study-ing, must takers to talk to hisadvisor. The student shou Id let theadvisor know that they are havingproblems. That is the only waythat the problem can be recog-nized and solved. The second step is to takeaction. Mercyhurst has two 3-credit elective classes available inthe Spring that can help improvereading and study skills. Theyhave been left out of the generalclass schedule. According toAnderson, it is listed as anI*MCCI/perm only'' course, butthe advanced reading 102 class isopen to any student who thinks hecan use the help. The college also has classes inbasiefmath and writing to helpstudents who feel they need helpin these subjects. The main point is...Thcre ishelp available for anyone whoneeds it All you have to do is ask.

To the editorIt's Academic Celebration thisweek, but those of us who havenight classes won't be doing muchcelebrating. "I find it difficult tounderstand why and how this ispossible. It's obvious that thereason we are taking eveningclasses is because w e have toomany things in conflict during theday; i.e. work, student teaching, orinternships.... Why do I feci asthough we are being punished or,in a sense, discriminated against?5Why is it that when we do havetime during the evening to attend

these lectures I offered, we mustattend class? Yes, I know that afew programs were offered later inthe evening,?but for those whohave families to go home to, thisagain causes conflict. What I amtrying to suggest is that next yearthe administration take into lightthose I: of us who would like toacademically celebrate, but canonly do so in the evening.Sincerely,STEC: Students Taking EveningClasses

I couldn't believe it!!I truly could not believcould ever make a m ovienot in the same genre as his most famous charactersRocky, RCobraJAn even bigger shock is that Tango & Cash is gooThe story is about two hot dog cops who come from oppof Los Angeles, Ray Tango, played by Stallone, and Gabrplayed by Kurt Russell. (Walt Disney must be turning in hissee what kind of movies Russell is making now.)

Thetwo characters are complete opposites. Tango is fromwest side and rich. He show s up for work in a three-piece framed glasses and reading the Wall Street Journ al. But, hstrange quirk....he likes to harrass criminals by doing thidropping live grenades down the front of their pants, f Cash, on the other hand, is a typical lower east side narcHe has shoulder length hair, works in t-shirts and blue jeans aat least three guns, two in holsters and one taped to his leg.Tango and Cash are arrested and convicted for the mufederal agent, which was a set up so Tango and Cash woulblame by a drug lord, played by Jack Palance. All this was revenge against them for confiscating almost $500 millionwhich belonged to Palance.Because they are not guilty of anything, other than the stgetting caught in sucha situation, they spend the restof the mto escapefromprison, the police and the crooks in an effort tnames. - |I personally think theone thing that made this movie sothe humor. Starting with the first scene and continuing throustory there was a surprising number of laughs. Stalloneeven at himself. When another cop says that Tango must think heStallone looks up withavery stern look on his face andsays,a (insert a five letter word for kitten). This was the first time either of these men worked insituation^ This movie could also be considered the first finacritical success that either of them has had in long time. Both Stallone and Russell were believable and they wotogether. If the movie-going public is lucky, this team willa sequel and other projects. I j Maybe the secret of this kind of movie is not to have thehisown films. Every time someone like Stallone directs, theout the same as the one just before it Konchalovsky took t(God, I hate that word) actors and made them seem like the kyou go out drinking with on Friday nights. 1 |Tango & Cash is funny and exciting. But, themain thinis different from anything either man has done before.I am not sure how long this movie will be in town.
