Letter from the Pastor
Time to get engaged During August, we will have a new staff position join our Main Street family, the Engagement Coordinator. This is not just a renaming of our previous Program Coordinator. We have already reassigned certain jobs and have refocused the position. Based on our purpose, United Methodists are to “make disciples for the transformation of the world.” We can only make disciples as we are fol-lowing Christ, both individually and corporately. To that end, the En-gagement Coordinator’s job centers around helping our Main Street family to do the work of disciples and to be engaged in ministry. This new position is not successful if ministry happens without involvement of the laity. Our Engagement Coordinator is only successful if more of us are growing in our walk with Christ and faithfully serving. Here is a por-tion of the job description: Purpose: Helping the members and constituents at Main Street UMC en-gage in discipleship as we seek to “serve Christ from city center.” This position works within the mission of Main Street UMC through:
Inviting – using social media to invite people to engage in disci-pleship (following Jesus through worship, learning, serving, and giving) at MSUMC
Welcoming – discovering the gifts of individuals as they respond to the invitations; equipping and training those who respond to serve and lead
Connecting – coordinating the disciples of MSUMC as we lead others through growing closer to God and compassionately serving others
Signs of Success: The Engagement Coordinator is successful as more of the MSUMC community are engaged in ministry. The Coordinator will strive to grow the depth of engagement (the amount that each disciple is involved) and the breadth of engagement (the number of different disciples engaged in ministry). Some of the specific responsibilities of this position can be found on page 2 of this newsletter. I hope that you will join me as we move forward together answering God’s call in faithful service to the world.
Grace and Peace, Pastor James

CHANCEL CHOIR RESUMES
REHEARSALS ON AUGUST 8
The Chancel Choir will resume rehearsals on Wednesday evening, August 8, at 6:30 pm. We have a great time in choir as we prepare anthems for each week and for special occasions like the Hang-ing of the Greens (yes, I said that in August!). The choir is more than just a musical organization. It really has the feeling of a family. If you’re looking for a place to belong, a place where “everybody knows your name” as a TV show of a previous era said, you should visit a choir rehearsal. It’s a great time with a great bunch of folks.
We’ve (hopefully!) been told to wash fruits and vegeta-bles before eating, but now researchers are proposing a much better way to remove dirt and other substances from food surfaces. At issue is pesticide use on most of our foods. For example, apples purchased in the grocery store are washed, usually in a bleach solution, prior to sale, but this is only to remove dirt and kill any harmful microbes that may be on the fruit or vegetable (that might encourage spoilage). It has long been thought that thorough rinsing, rubbing and/or scrubbing fruits and vegetables at home would help remove pesticide residue, but researchers are finding out that is not the case.
They ran an experiment using apples treated with two different pesticides, one of which is designed to pene-trate the skin of the apple. They washed different groups of the apples in plain water, in a mixture of the bleach solution applied during commercial processing, and in a solution of baking soda and water. The baking soda and water solution was the most effective method of remov-ing pesticides, however, it took 12 to 15 minutes of soak-ing to completely rid the pesticides used in this study.
Researchers pointed out that while the baking soda method works better than the two methods above, it will not be consistent across all pesticides or all fruits or vege-tables. However, it’s good to hear that something as sim-ple and common as baking soda is effective at remov-ing some pesticides.
So, you should wash your produce before you eat it, by rubbing it under running water or scrubbing if it has a tough skin, preferably when you bring it home. The longer pesticides sit on fruits and vegetables, the deeper they’re absorbed, and the harder it is to remove them. If you want to take an extra step, consider submerging your produce in a solution of one teaspoon of baking soda to two cups of water for two minutes or more (the longer you soak, the more chemicals you get rid of). Then rinse in tap water again before eating.
Of course, produce labeled USDA Organic is the best way to reduce your exposure to pesticides in produce because organic crops are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides.

parents, Kayla and Zach Chapman .
Membership Information Session Pastor James will be holding an informa-tion session for those interested in joining Main Street UMC on Sunday, August 12
at 9:50 am in the Chapel. This session will provide multiple resources about Main
Street, the United Methodist Church, and our faith in general. Brief tours of the fa-
cilities will also be made available. Please call or email the church office if
you are available to attend.
Opportunity to Serve: Birthday Card Ministry Volunteers are needed to write a brief birthday greet-ing (one or two sentences) on behalf of MSUMC to those celebrating birthdays. You will be able to select your preferred month to volunteer. The church will pro-vide birthday postcards and stamps - enough for each celebrant. You will be asked to have the cards sent in time for each card to arrive on the birthday. Many thanks to those who have already helped members feel blessed on their special day over the years. Please call the church office or Susan Pinckney (864-223-9604), if interested.
