The challengeThe cost of power for mines is a major challenge to their economic viability because of rising electricity and diesel fuel prices and energy shortfalls in key mining markets. Energy now accounts for 20-40 percent of the operating costs for most mines. Rising production costs, global competition and the drive to improve overall environmental performance are motivating leading resource companies to reduce their costs and look to new solutions, such as renewables, as a means of making energy cost savings, increasing the energy security of their operations and achieving an overall improvement in environmental outcomes.

The solutions, the meeting placeEnergy and Mines’ Toronto Summit is now well established as the meeting place for senior mining operators and global energy experts to meet and discuss solutions for affordable, reliable and sustainable power for mines. 400+ mining operators, renewable energy and fi nance experts are expected to participate this October 22-23.

3.50 SESSION 9: INTEGRATING RENEWABLES INTO MINE REHABILITATION

One of the key areas where mining and renewable energy can partner successfully is in developing power projects on former mine sites. For mines, there is a legacy and social benefi t to integrating a renewables project into a rehabilitation plan. And for developers, former mine lands do not have the same litigious and environmental permitting hurdles that public lands often present for utility-scale projects.

3.50 SUPPORTING RENEWABLES DEVELOPMENT ON FORMER MINE LANDS

Shahid Mahmud, Team Leader, EPA National Mining Team, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

4.10 PANEL DISCUSSION: ENHANCING MINE CLOSURE AND RECLAMATION WITH RENEWABLES

• What are the main benefi ts of integrating renewable energy projects into mine closure plans?

• What has been the response from community stakeholders to these legacy assets?

• What are the fi nancial benefi ts of incorporating these projects into mine rehabilitation plans?

• At what point in a mine’s life is it best to begin looking at renewables as part of reclamation?

• Feedback from the US EPA on its experience in supporting renewables on reclaimed mine lands

• What other government incentives support mines in exploring renewables as part of reclamation?

3.50 TECHNOLOGY SPOTLIGHT: WHEN DOES GAS MAKE SENSE?

The pressure to reduce costs and greenhouse gas emissions coupled with the apparent abundance of gas supply is encouraging mines to look at this alternative fuel source to power operations and equipment. This session will feature mines that have recently invested in gas and explore the benefi ts and challenges of this cleaner fuel source.
