The 5th Annual National Medical Competition held at Tongji
In effect, such institutional context will encourage
undergraduate students to focus further on their level of
experience, as they understand that medical practice will
constantly put them under pressure and therefore expose
them to the real world of medical practice. This will drive
future professionals to an increasing awareness of everyday
life situations and therefore improve healthcare quality all
over the nation, which is the main goal of this grand
competition.
It is a great honor for Tongji University School of
Medicine (TUSM) to host the 5th annual National Clinical
Medical Competition (east region) for the year 2014 under
the organization of the medical education department of the
State Ministry of Education. The opening ceremony
conducted by the organizing committee members has
successfully taken place on the 12th of April in the south
campus stadium of Tongji University. 35 Nationwide
western-based medical colleges have proudly been selected
to participate into the first phase of the competition, which is
aimed to highlight and promote basic medical training.
This competition has made a huge impact on student’s
clinical skills and on clinical practice teaching. From now on
all the medical schools nationwide will be inspired and
focused on improving their standards of studies in order to
be able to take part in the prestigious event. Professors may
change their teaching methods in order to prepare their
students better for the competition, thus letting medical
students gain far more experience in their practice instead of focusing mostly on the theory.

(ISCES) was successfully held in Tongji University on 5th June 2014.
Since 2011 Tongji University has the privilege of hosting the annual
gathering of more than 400 students and young experts in the field of
environmental science to discuss the most pressing environmental issues,
raise awareness of global events and explore innovative solutions and
different measures in response to global issues and challenges in
sustainable development.
The 5-day youth summit attracts participants and audience from nearly 50
countries of diversified background. The participants were divided in 5

SPRING 2014 THE MBBS NEWS
Medical students at Tongji University have now the
privilege to access several more world-class scientific and
medical databases in addition to the already available ones,
including “AccessMedicine” and “AccessSurgery” databases as
well as new USMLE exam board websites that would help them
exceed in their studies.
Access to new Databases
The University library has recently widened its archive material for the students in the medical faculty. By purchasing access to three new databases, the library is now licensed to allow individual authorized users to access the databases in support of teaching, study and research at the university, with the addition of enabling students to print-off search results or make a copy of limited extracts for personal use.
Users can only access the databases via the library website. The library pays for the
student access to databases but the databases must recognize or authenticate the IP
Domain of the campus. Therefore the databases are not accessible off-campus.
MBBS Students Contributing To The Community!
In the eyes medical students helping the
community and volunteering is equally
important as working hard to gain
experience and knowledge in their line of
duty. This year, the International
Student’s Association (ISA) and
Chinese Student Union (ISO) of
Tongji University have
successfully worked in
collaboration with MBBS students
to organize an exemplary blood
donation drive for the 6000
International students on campus.
The event held for the first time for the
international students was a BOOM!
With as many as 8 MBBS students
volunteering to help publicize the time and
location of the vent, as well as helping
prepare the facility where a lecture was
given to highlight the benefits, rules and
procedures of donating blood. ISA is
now preparing to extend an invitation
to other universities in Shanghai to
launch a blood donation competition.
Special thanks for the fellow students
who paid efforts in making this event a
successful and delightful one.

Discovery Shanghai…
Psychology conference The 21st International Federation for Psychotherapy World
Congress was held in Shanghai in early May. Tongji
University’s very own esteemed psychology professor
Dr.Xudong Zhao chaired the congress. The congress boasted
over a thousand participants from 29 different countries, and
included a myriad of programs such as workshops, plenary
speeches etc. Students from the MBBS program had the
privileged opportunity to attend the congress, and they were
able to discover more about the main theme of the event:
“Psychotherapy Contributing to Global Health”.
Mandarin is now becoming one of the most important
international languages, and Shanghai has now become a “hot
spot” for students to study. While looking into china I realized
how a country with such a vast ancient history has over the last
two decades been able to successfully integrate to its current
status. More than being surprised by that I was also attracted
by the idea of living in a global city, you really get to know
about China's vibrant culture from the vantage point of one of
its best University. It’s common knowledge that Shanghai is
annually home to a variety of major International expos and
conferences. Being first-year only we have already been
exposed to such events of international importance!
The 14th China medical devices exhibition was held in Shanghai in early June. The purpose of the event was to
gather the suppliers of medical devices with their potential customers, and to explore the world of
medical technology innovation. A group of ambitious MBBS students were able to visit the expo, where they learned about medical technology supply, production,
and demand.

Psychology symposium
In the first year MBBS syllabus, Psychology is a subject that is not
taken lightly! Complete with 3 Professors, the course is highly
focused to let the students perceive the importance understating
the patient, but more importantly to cohere the relation between
doctor-patients. This year Dr. Angela Fan has especially organized
a symposium for us, inviting 4 students from her university in
Taiwan to come shanghai meet us. The symposium was on
Medical education and it was held in order for students to
exchange ideas and opinions regarding the topic.
Congratulations to our three MBBS lads: Ismail, Inesh, Abdullah who have proudly participated in
2014 Tongji World Cup are representing their
continent. Playing for the Asian team, they were all in all partially disappointed for losing the tournament but happy at the same time for
securing the third place. They are now looking forward for the next tournament in
the near future.
Performing On Stage
Thanks to Jessy, Kombo and Lydia for giving an astonishing performance to the students who have graduated in this academic year. Also, special thanks to the volunteers who
contributed in issuing this newsletter!

SPRING 2014 THE MBBS NEWS
Introduction
My name is Inesh Thureraja from Srilanka, I am completing second year of my 6 year MBBS course in Tongji University, school of medicine (TUSM) Shanghai. I have been granted one of the Dean’s Scholarships for this year. I chose to study medicine as I feel it’s a service to mankind, which can be pursued by the strong hearted.
WHY TONGJI?
First and foremost the question should be why Shanghai? For those of you who don’t know much of Shanghai, it’s very busy cosmopolitan city, which is very expat friendly, which means you are able to get around with less amount of Chinese language fluency. Tongji is one of China’s most reputed and famous Universities. Even though the medical school is quite new but it provides holistic medical education, which grooms students to become good doctors. The facilities of the university are state of the art, be it the various medical labs both for learning and research purposes are up to standard. The local professors are well trained and many overseas teachers are brought to do certain modules for the MBBS program. Most Professors range from America, Europe, and Hong Kong etc. Tongji is one of the very few universities that have a vast number of foreign students studying various disciplines and Tongji has an International Students Association (ISA), which is an action packed association. Tongji promotes students to take part in many sports and has facilities for almost all the sport.
What I have achieved
I have gained knowledge in the Chinese language which is highly beneficial not only in shanghai but also in my home country as Chinese (mandarin) is a very fast growing language throughout the world. I have been able to have hands on experience for subjects such as Pathology, Anatomy, Pathophysiology, Genetics, and Physiology, Microbiology etc., which is not provided in many universities, this is a huge bonus for me as a budding doctor. I had the chance for pursuing my passion for Football, there is an International student football team, which I got selected to play for team. The school hosted its own version of the Tongji World cup, in which I played for the Asian team along with two other members from the medical school. The medical school analyzed every student’s academic results and the extra-curricular activities for the dean’s scholarship, for which I was one of the recipients. I was able to be a part of many activities such as Blood donation campaign, charity campaign and environmental campaign. I CAN WHOLE HEARTEDLY SAY THAT IN TONGJI I AM ABLE TO ACHIEVE AN ALL-ROUND EDUCATION WITH EXPOSURE TO
VARIOUS SPORTS AND CULTURES.
