to The Masonic Home on March 18, 2015, and hails from Gulf Beach Lodge No. 291. Bette resides in Room 222W, and her birthday is November 4th! Bette was born in Chelyan, West Virginia. Her maiden name is, Bette Davis, named after, “Bette Davis” the Actress. Bette’s grandpar-ents owned two stores. Growing up her mother always felt lonely because they were always busy working at the stores so she said when she grew up she never wanted to be alone, and ended up having twelve children! Bette is the third in the bunch. Her father was a Mason and Chief Electri-cian for a Steel Company, and her mother was a Housewife. Bette adored her mother and loved to dress up her and her sister’s hair. She graduated from Sherman High School and 1945, then she went to college in Charleston, West Virginia for two years. She was inspired by a neighbor, who was a doctor, to focus on getting a career in the medical field. She eventually received a Nursing Assistance Certificate. She was a founding member of the first chapter of “AAMA”, The American Association of Medical Assistance in Charleston, West Virginia, and was later elected Vice President of the National AAMA. She kept busy going to all of the National Conventions and was also very active in fundraising for All Children's Hospital and The American Heart Association. The largest amount she raised was $10,000.00 in six weeks, selling Boyd Bears for All Children's Hospital. She also worked the Polls during several Elections over the years. Bette has two boys, Edward and Michael, with her first husband, Nobel Hicks, and she also has three grandchildren. Her second husband was, Morris O’Dell whom she met during college. Morris was a prominent Heart and Lung Specialist Surgeon and leading Heart Surgeon in the state of West Virginia. Bette managed the office and assisted with patients along side her husband in his Medical Practice. Bette and Morris traveled extensively and spent quite a few times at Churchill Downs. They had a vacation condominium on Treasure Island, which Bette still owns and enjoys when she can. Morris passed away in 1999, and they were married for 42 years. Bette later married, John Barr. John was a Mason and they resided in Charleston, West Virginia. The were married for six years before John passed away of cancer. Bette’s mother taught her how to sew when she was twelve years old and she eventually made all her own clothes, coats, suits etc. Everyone complemented her on how professionally made they were. She took classes in watercolor painting and enjoyed doing that in her spare time. One time she spent a whole year painting twenty five large paintings and gave them out to friends and family for Christmas gifts. She sang in the Charleston Light Opera, and in her school and church choir. Bette was living at Arbor Oaks Retirement Community in St Petersburg for a year and a half before joining the Masonic Home on March 18, 2015. Bette continues being a devoted volunteer here too. She works in the Boutique every Wednesday, she helps folding the newsletters and she is also on the Welcoming Committee. She enjoys singing with the Song Birds and going to music programs. She is an avid reader, attends chapel services, likes playing Bingo and is involved in a lot of the other activities here. Bette is always perfectly dressed, she is kind and generous with a soft spoken polite southern drawl, a definite “Genuine Southern Belle”! ~Maryanne Mello

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
John F. Kennedy — Submitted by Chuck Taylor
A boy and his dad on a fishing-trip— There is a glorious fellowship!
Father and son and the open sky And the white clouds lazily drifting by,
And the laughing stream as it runs along With the clicking reel like a martial song, And the father teaching the youngster gay How to land a fish in the sportsman’s way.
I fancy I hear them talking there In an open boat, and the speech is fair. And the boy is learning the ways of men From the finest man in his youthful ken. Kings, to the youngster, cannot compare
With the gentle father who’s with him there. And the greatest mind of the human race Not for one minute could take his place.
Which is happier, man or boy? The soul of the father is steeped in joy,
For he’s finding out, to his heart’s delight, That his son is fit for the future fight.
He is learning the glorious depths of him, And the thoughts he thinks and his every whim;
And he shall discover, when night comes on, How close he has grown to his little son.
A boy and his dad on a fishing-trip— Builders of life’s companionship!
Oh, I envy them, as I see them there Under the sky in the open air,
For out of the old, old long-ago Come the summer days that I used to know,
When I learned life’s truths from my father’s lips As I shared the joy of his fishing-trips.
