Our Classroom Prayer

Lord, as we make the ‘time2connect’ with those here at school and in the wider community,

we pray the following….

Open us up, God:

for all you have for us today.

Open our eyes, God:

to see you reflected in every human face.

Open our hearts, God:

to feel your compassion for this broken world.

Open our ears, God:

to hear the whisper of your Spirit and the wisdom of your Word.

Open our hands, God:

to serve others in our community in your glory.

Open our lips, God:

That our mouths may sing out your praise.

Amen

Our College Assembly last Monday afternoon made it a great start to the week. Once again a warm welcome was extended to the many new students and their families. Last week the staff underwent mandatory training in Sun Safety. This session highlights the importance of wearing a hat outdoors, hydrating regularly, refraining from arduous tasks in the heat and taking regular breaks when playing/working outside. All these important habits are reinforced in the classroom. Please continue to talk with your child/ren about the effects of the hot weather and the need to practise these basic habits throughout the coming weeks. Safety in and around the juniorjuniorjuniorjunior and middle primary playgroundsmiddle primary playgroundsmiddle primary playgroundsmiddle primary playgrounds is essential. For the safety of all children there are certain rules that I ask all students, parents and carers to observe:- 1. Due to the design of the equipment, only the JP students are to play on the equipment near the corner of High St and Crawford St. The MP primary play equipment is the one closer to the centre of the P-4 playground.

2. Students may only play on the play equipment when the bell has rung and the teacher has commenced yard duty. Students are reminded, “Listen for the bell and look for the teacher.”

3. Students must use the play equipment appropriately. This means not climbing on top of of the equipment.

4. Pre-school age children and toddlers must not play on any equipment at any time.

5. The play equipment is not to be used after the school bell rings at 3.15pm.

Our Opening Mass will be celebrated tomorrow morningtomorrow morningtomorrow morningtomorrow morning at 9.009.009.009.00amamamam in the church. We have been preparing for this important event all week and are looking forward to gathering in prayer where we will all commit to the year ahead. I hope you can make it!

Next Wednesday the College community will attend Ash Wednesday Mass.

Ash Wednesday signals the beginning of Lent Lent Lent Lent which extends for forty days. During Lent we are called to confront ourselves honestly - to remind ourselves as humans we are fragile and that we are not the source of our own salvation. To receive the blessing and liberation that God constantly offers us, we need to accept our human condition with the humility and trust of Jesus in the desert. Thus Lent’s liturgical colour, purplepurplepurplepurple, symbolises awareness of sin and readiness of conversion.

During Lent, we highlight the work of CaritasCaritasCaritasCaritas, the fundraising arm of the Catholic Church. We each have a Project Compassion BoxProject Compassion BoxProject Compassion BoxProject Compassion Box in our classrooms. These boxes are placed on the prayer tables and the students are encouraged to contribute to Project Compassion over the next 6 weeks6 weeks6 weeks6 weeks. The colour of the prayer cloth for Lent is purple.

Each newsletter talks about important dates, the weekly routine of the classroom and other important issues such as hats and uniform. If you have any queries about your classroom, please see your child’s teacher.

JP-S and JP-P have continued their Reading Mornings with many parents present. This is an opportunity for parents to spend some time in the classroom becoming familiar with the children and their routine. It is also a time for the children to build their confidence and enjoyment of reading whilst reinforcing their Reading Goals.

This Friday is our school Opening MassOpening MassOpening MassOpening Mass. It is a beautiful occasion and slightly interesting with it being the Preps first full Mass. We look forward to seeing you there.

It has been a busy week with ParentParentParentParent----TeacherTeacherTeacherTeacher----Student InterviewsStudent InterviewsStudent InterviewsStudent Interviews on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. It was a great opportunity to meet parents and chat about our shared focus – your child. A great first step towards building, or building on, positive relationships.

Whilst not quite as dramatic as the picture I have chosen, there are earthworks going on in P-4 playground. The dry creek bed that had become a safety issue, is being removed and the area is being returned to green grass. It will be a lovely place to sit in the shade without a footy or cricket ball visiting. Watch this space.

THE SEASON OF LENTTHE SEASON OF LENTTHE SEASON OF LENTTHE SEASON OF LENT---- Food FoFood FoFood FoFood For Lifer Lifer Lifer Life This year, the season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 18th April. It marks the beginning of the forty days of preparation for Easter. It mirrors Jesus’ preparation for his ministry, while in the desert, he spent 40 days in prayer and fasting. As a Catholic school, we are called to experience our own time of reflection, in which we also enter into a period of prayer, giving to others and going without while we reflect on how we can be more Christ-like. So, in preparation for the feast of Easter we ask:

What can I do this Lent to be more like Jesus, so that I can bring life to others? What can I do this Lent to be more like Jesus, so that I can bring life to others? What can I do this Lent to be more like Jesus, so that I can bring life to others? What can I do this Lent to be more like Jesus, so that I can bring life to others? During Lent in Australian Catholic schools and parishes, we are invited to support Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion. We are also encouraged to learn more about how to be together in solidarity with the world’s poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

Our first fundraising activity for Caritas is to share Pancake TuesdayPancake TuesdayPancake TuesdayPancake Tuesday together as a school community. Next Tuesday, pancakes will be available for sale at recess for a gold coin donations of $1. Year 9 students will be making the pancakes with Mrs Morris and then the SRC and College Leaders will be in charge of selling the pancakes. The money raised will go towards our fundraising effort for Caritas.

Next week we will have an explanation of the other prayer opportunities and fundraising activities that we will have during this special season of Lent. Thank you for your support.
