Explain the significance and meaning of poupou to the Maori and how they were used (why/how is it important?).

Communicate identity through the creation of a personal poupou.

Make effective use of space, shape, form, line, balance and scale in my Maori art.

Use other Maori artists’ work to develop my own ideas. Identify the features of their work.

Poupou• Poupou are the smaller wall posts of

a wharenui (meeting house).

• The carvings and markings on them reveal the identify of the person represented.
